Notes
- Several redords are found to document facts of Betty's and here husband's life. In personal correspondence, their granddaughter reported their marriage date.

Elizabeth Adams, Age 18 (b abt 1863)
License issue 30 May 1881

Recorded Graham County Marriage Book
North Carolina Archives Microfilm 1903
The North Carolina marriage record has the date reported by their granddaughter. This matches the number of years married reported on the 1900 census. But her birth year reported in that census is 1869, as Virginia also reports above, which could not fit. However, the age reported on her marriage record is 18, which makes birth about 1863, five years earlier than reported on the 1900 census and on her death certificate. The birth date is likely wrong. It is not uncommon for later recall by family members reports birth dates later than the actual case.
At any rate, given the facts recorded in North Carolina Marriage records, we should accept that record's report of age, and resulting likely birth year, over the very often incorrect 1900 cnesus, and the fallible recall of her husband almost a century later. In regard to Bettie's marriag eand related family matters, her granddaughter comments:
"Regarding the marriage age of my grandmother, Bettie Adams Lovin, we've noted that and are not sure of dates since records differ and were not great in some families in the US during those days. Have seen a different date some time ago but just coming back to research genealogy, so for now ok with 12 yrs. My mother made the claims that
1) she (my mother Juanita Lovin Perkins) was the youngest of 14 children of William and Bettie's children;
2) that she herself was 16 when she married; and
3) that my grandmother, Bettie, was part Cherokee but my DNA does not show any Native American heritage, although a grandson has a small amount of Native Indian heritage."

The birth date reported on Betty's death certificate, and thus used on her grave has the year as 1869. But with the age 18 reported on her marriage record, she would have been born in 1863. If she had been born in 1869, she would have been only 12 in 1881 when she married.
