Mildred (Millie) Hill Blanton shared with me information about herself and her family for this genealogy: "Bob and Millie live in Comanche, Oklahoma. Bob is retired from Sun Pipeline Company. Millie is retired after teaching 39 years as a geography and history teacher in the Comanche Public Schools. Millie works in her church, is Registrar of the Duncan chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, and spends much time continuing the work of her father's hobby of genealogy." -- Mildred (Millie) Hill Blanton, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, July 2008
In the 1900 census, Claire is reported as Clara and as a girl. In 1910, this is corrected to give his name as Claire and report that he is a Male. The conflict of gender was settled when i found his WWI Draft Registration. He was living in St Louis, Missouri, at the time, and working in East St Louis, Illinois. U. S. World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918, Claire O Bledsoe, 4053 Lindell St, St Louis, Missouri; born 21 August 1897 in Deport, Lamar County, Texas; father born Tennessee; employer Mobile & Ohio RR, East St Louis, Illinois; nearest relative Mrs Y B Bledsoe, Idabel, Oklahoma; registration in St Louis, 24 August 1918; signed C O Bledsoe. Since he reports his mother as his nearest relative, it would seem Yancy has passed away before this time. But we know this is not the case, since he appears in the 1920 census with Ceny. Yancy is missing from the 1930 census, so he died between 1920 and 1930. The Social Security Death Index gives us some more information about Claire. We learn the month and year of death. We see he was still living in St Louis, where he was in 1917, when he registered for the WWI draft. Name: Claire Bledsoe SSN: 497-01-2113 Born: 21 Aug 1898 Last Benefit: 63109 Saint Louis, Saint Louis City, Missouri Died: Aug 1980 Last Residence: 63122 Saint Louis, Saint Louis, Missouri SSN issued: Missouri (Before 1951)
Dr Bledsoe and his wife Mary were both born in Tennessee. Their great grandson Charles Christian reports form his genealogical research that Jacob was born in 1838 in Milam (County?) and Mary was from Alamo. Jacob and Mary were married in 1863. Charles reprots that Dr. Bledsoe participated in the Civil War and attained the rank of Captain. He was wounded in the battle of Atlanta. 1870 Federal Census, Henderson County, Tennessee, 27 July, 9th Civil District, PO Lexington, page 16, Hse/Fam #116 Bledsoe, Jacob D 32 M W MD $500 personal estate born Tennessee Bledsoe, Mary W 24 F W Keeping House born Tennessee Bledsoe, Yancy B 4 M W Tennessee Bledsoe, Selia B 4 F W Tennessee Bledsoe, Newton O 10months M W Tennessee [b abt Sept 1869] According to grandson Charles Christian, Dr Jacob Yancy moved to Texas about 1893. We find Jacob and Mary together with their son Yancy and his family for the 1900 census. In 1900 they are in the very northern area of Texas for the 1900 census, near the Red River in Lamar County, not far from Arkansas. For the 1800 census, I could not find an entry definitely for Yancy's family. There are Bledsoes in both Tennessee and Texas with similar names, but I cannot find a John with Willie as a wife. Thus we do not know what route the Bledsoes took from Tennessee to Texas nor a precise time frame. 1900 Federal Census, Lamar County, Texas, 23 June, Justice Precinct 7, District 86, page 19B, east of Bee Bayou, Hse #335, Fam #346 Bledsoe, John (?) Bledsoe, Willy Wife W F Nov 1844 62 Married 35 years TN TN TN The name here likely was intended to be Jacob. The Willy is probably for the W in Mary W recorded in 1870. I have not found the Bledsoes in 1880. Charles Christian tells me Jacob and Mary moved to Idabel, Oklahoma, where later we also find Yancy and Ceny. Yancy and his wife Ceny are married in Texas, and we find them for the 1910 census in the adjoining county north of Red River in the new state of Oklahoma. Charles Christian gave the name of Yancy's brother to me as Oscar Newton. I note that the names are reversed in the census of 1870.

I was given Oscar's name as Oscar Newton by Charles Christian. THe 1870 census lists him as Newton O. 1870 Federal Census, Henderson County, Tennessee, 27 July, 9th Civil District, PO Lexington, page 16, Hse/Fam #116 Bledsoe, Jacob D 32 M W MD $500 personal estate born Tennessee Bledsoe, Mary W 24 F W Keeping House born Tennessee Bledsoe, Yancy B 4 M W Tennessee Bledsoe, Selia B 4 F W Tennessee Bledsoe, Newton O 10months M W Tennessee [b abt Sept 1869] Charles reports that Oscar married Annie Morgan. I have not identified Yancy's family before 1900. There are many Bledsoe families in Henderson and other counties of Tennessee. In censuses, Yancy's age varies, yielding a birth year of abt 1866 or 1870. There is also another Yancy Bledsoe, also born in Tennessee, and whose census ages usually suggest birth in the year 1866. This Yancy may be a cousin, from Henderson County, Tennessee, and in Texas about the same time as our Yancy and his family. The fathers of both Yancys are Physicians, which seems to make it likely they are brothers, or perhaps cousins. Yancy's grandson Charles Christian, tells me that the Yancy family moved to Texas about 1893. He also told me that Yancy's parents were Jacob D Bledsoe and Mary W Allen. In 1900 we find Yancy and his family, along with his parents, in north Texas, near Paris in Lamar County, close to the Red River. The 1900 census gives us month and year of births. While we have found those to vary wildly with amazing discrepancies, I will use the birth dates given in the census for the Bledsoe family. The birth date of Yancey here is May 1866. His wife's name is spelled Ceny in every census, except this one, where it is Scenie. In 1900 Yancy and Ceny (Scenie) are living next door to what appears to be Yancy's parents. The names are somewhat obscured, expecially the husband's. It appeared to be John and Willie. John is a Physician, which matches Yancy's father Jacob. The name in the 1900 census is uncertain because the tally marks for the page are right over the elder Bledsoe's name. It begins with a J and then it looks like an o, but it is difficult to decipher. Besides the tally marks, the name above is Lizzie, and the tails of the two Zs are full and long and also cover most of the Bledsoe name area. The name Willie or Willy could be for the middle name of Yancy's mother, Mary W. 1900 Federal Census, Lamar County, Texas, 23 June, Justice Precinct 7, District 86, page 19B, east of Bee Bayou, Hse #335, Fam #346 Bledsoe, John (?)
