William married in Panola County, Mississippi. where his first two

Ethel, Arkansas County, Arkansas between 1862 and 1869. I cannot
find an 1860 census record for William.
Family sources report that William H Butler first married Frances
Spain. In the 1870 census he is enumerated with his second wife,
India Smith. It appears that Bernard and Edward here are the sons
of Frances Spain, but Morgan is the son of India. Bernard and
Edward were born in 1860 and 1862, then no other child was born (at
least to survive to the 1870 census) until about January 1870, when
the child of India Smith was born, Morgan.

William H Butler and family are reported in the Arkansas County,

In the 1900 Arkansas County, Arkansas census, William H Butler is
enumerated In household of son William M Butler. There is a
conflict in the report of his birth place. The birth place of
William H and his parents is reported as Virginia. Likewise his

Place of burial, Butler Cemetery:
David Lee reports burial of William H Butler in "Butler Cemetery,
Mt. Pleasant,, Arkansas." This format appears to indicate that
Butler Cemetery is in a town called Mt Pleasant, but the town of Mt
Pleasant is in Izard County, in the north of Arkansas. The Butler
Cemetery, on the other hand, is referred to as being in Ethel, the
community with a post office about 2 miles to the north. Mt
Pleasant Cemetery is a mile or less north of the Butler Cemetery,
between Butler Cemetery and Ethel center, where the store and post
office are located. Many Butlers are also buried in Mt Pleasant
Cemetery. Perhaps that local area is referred to in some contexts
as "Mt Pleasant," but I have never heard that reference. Mt
Pleasant Cemetery is always said to be in Ethel. I have not been to
the Butler Cemetery.
-- Orville Boyd Jenkins
Though David Lee reports that William is buried in the Butler
Cemetery, a recently-discovered private paper about the family sasys
he and his wife Lucetta (India) were buried together in Mt Pleasant
Cemetery in Ethel.
"When Grandpa Butler died he was buried beside his wife in Mount
Pleasant with full masonic honors."

William and India's were not among Butler gravestones photographed
by Edith McSwain Jenkins in Mt Pleasant in 2003. It is not certain
if these graves were not there or if for some reason they were not
photographed when other Butler graves were photographed.
There were at least two William H Butlers. This one was named Hunt
after his mother's family name. His brother Memucan also had the
middle name of Hunt. His brother Thomas F had a son name William H,
but none of the sources give the full middle name. Their
grandfather Isaac (father of John Pomfret) also had a son named
William, but we have no middle name or initial for him.

For some reason in this 1930 census, Ada Loora's parents are both
reported as born in Alabama, when we know from multiple sources that
it should be North Carolina for both, although in the 1880 census,
for some reason, her mother's birthplace is reported as South
Carlina, rather than North.

Sainte Geneviève, where Félicité was born, was the first white
settlement in what became known as Missouri. In 1735, French lead
miners and hunters settled in the location in New France. Félicité
was born there on 27 June 1791 (27 February 1791 in some sources).
Missouri was part of Louisiana Territory, and thus part of the
Louisiana Purchase that the USA bought from France in 1803.
The Arkansas Marriage Records report her marriage to Louis Dumont on
20 May 1810, in Arkansas County. Family sources indicate they
married in Arkansas Post. This record spells her name as Felicite
Caloit.

An article in the Grand Prairie Historical Society Bulletin reports
details for Félicité as follows:
"Felicite Caillot (b 27 June 1971 bpt Ste Genevieve MO 29 Mar 1871 d
in Desha Co 1860-62. Signed marriage contract before Andre Fagot at
Arkansas Post AR on 20 May 1810 with Louis Dumont, son of Jean
Pierre Dumont and Genevieve Lecuyer".
-- "Some Descendants of Marie Messager" (Grand Prairie Historical
Society Bulletin, October 1980)
In March 2008, a few days after finding several genealogies with
various information on the Dumont-Dumond family lineage, I found
widow Félicité and some of her children in the 1840 census. This
was an interesting find, since the censuses before 1850 give the
name of only the head of household.
I found a listing for Lewis Dumont in Arkansas Township of Arkansas
County, Arkansas. Censuses before 1850 also give only the number of
males or females in 5-10 year age ranges. The oldest male in the
household of Lewis was 20-30 years old, while the oldest female was
60-70 years old.
Working out the members of the household, I found the household
matched the family of Louis B Dumont, minus Louis and older
children. This was Félicité and most of her children, and the
enumerator had listed the oldest son, Lewis, as head of the
household.
1840 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, Arkansas Township, p
2
Lewis Dumont 2 Males 5-10 [Reges, Israel] 2 Males 15-20 [Caliste,
Pierre] 1 Male 20-30 [Lewis]
2 Females 5-10 [Mannett and ?] 1 Female 10-15 [Virginia] 1 Female
50-60 [Félicité]
The estate settlement of Félicité in 1862 includes the name of
Felicite Pertuis as one of the heirs. The source analyzing this
settlement record along with other official records (Grand Prairie
Historical Society Bulletin, October 1980) indicates that this
Felicite Brinsback is the daughter of a Felicite Dumond, who was the
daughter of Louis and Felicity (Félicité) Dumond. This source
indicates that Felicite daughter of Louis and Felicity was born
between 1810 and 1815. Thus she would have apparently been out of
the house and not counted in the 1840 census. All the children are
accounted for there except one female child between 5 and 10 (and
thus born between 1830 and 1835).
In 1840, Lewis/Louis, son of Louis B Dumont, would have been 24,
matching this entry. Félicité would have been 49, based on her
recorded birth date, which is consistent in various family
genealogies, based on records in New France. Her birthday was 27
June 1791. So perhaps she mis-stated her age. We find that a lot
in this period of time. The age groupings of the other children
match those found in the genealogies.
Since Louis is the oldest son here, this means that Jean-Baptiste,
who was one year older than Louis, is either already married or out
working away from the home. I have not yet found a listing for him
in the 1840 census. There is a possible listing for him in the
Desha County Militia in 1861,under the entry J Dumond, but another
family genealogy reports his death in 1938. No record of a marriage
of Jean-Baptiste has been found.
The two youngest boys are Reges (Roger) of the genealogies, which
probably is the name Regis, and Israel. In one sources the name is
spelled Reyes. The two older boys are Caliste and Pierre; the older
girl would be Virginia. The two young girls are Mannett and another
daughter that the genealogies do not account for. In have still not
found out who this might be. Further, I have not found her in the
1850 census. Where would this 11-15 years old girl be in 1850?
Perhaps the extra girl int eh 1840 census is a child that died
before the 1850 census.
I did find information about another daughter not in the
genealogies. In May 2008, I found a discussion on a Dumont
genealogy list posting information from the will of Louis, probated
after Félicit??'s death. This includes the name of Frances, who is
reported to have been born about 1810-15.
In 1850, all the Dumont family entries are spelled Dumond. The
Dumont family members are all living close together, and are listed
in Chester Township of Desha County. It is not clear if they have
moved, or borders and townships have been changed since earlier
information indicating they were in Arkansas County.
Félicité is listed under the English form of her name Felicity. We
note that in 1860, she has apparently given her name with the French
pronunciation, because the enumerator spells it Felicita. In her
son Reges (or something similar in this scrawled entry) and younger
son Israel [spelled here as Isreal), are with her. There are also
two other children, whose last name appears to be Branton.
1850 Federal Census, Desha County, Arkansas, 1 November, Chester
Township, page 71 (141), Hse/Fam #268
Felicita [Félicité] Dumond 42 F [No occupation listed] $1500 Real
Estate born Arkansas
Ragios [? maybe Ragies = Regis] Dumond 21 M born Arkansas
Isreal Dumond 19 M born Arkansas
Felicity Branton 16 F Arkansas
Frances Branton 16 F Arkansas
From the first names of the Branton children, Felicity and Frances,
it appears they are grandchildren. I have not been able to tie
these two children to the Dumond family line.
The age here has to be wrong, since age 42 would make her born in
1808, but we know her mother died in 1804, and numerous family
genealogies from different families intersecting with the Dumonts
report her birthday as 27 June 1791. This appears to be based on
government records from Missouri, New France. There is some
uncertainty, as some genealogies report the date as 27 February
1791.
Eldest daughter Virginia lives 4 houses away from her mother,
married to Isaac Love, with their first son David listed in the 1850
census. Between Félicité and Virginia, next door to Félicité, is
Caliste and his wife Desirée [spelled Desira here] and their first
child Mary.
In 1860, we find Félicité still as the head of a household, but only
two children are listed. We find John, age 14 listed first. This
matches a grandson of Louis and Félicité, son of Pierre who died
about 1847-1848, and his wife Mary Pinot. Mary appears in the 1850
census married to John Stokes, and John and his younger sister Mary
Dumond are in that household. At 14, John was born in 1846.
The second child in Félicité's household is her granddaughter Mary
Haines, daughter of Mannett (or Manett) Dumont and D B Haines. We
know Mannett died about 1849, and it seems likely her husband died
before the 1860 census. I have found one record in 1850 that might
be D B Hains [sic], with a previous wife, the former widow Frances
Stillwell, in Arkansas Post. Both are 35 years old, thus born about
1815. But there is a child Mary A Haines in that household that
would be a child of Frances Stillwell Haines. I have not found
Manett Dumond in 1850.

Félicité's age reported here again conflicts with family reports of
her birth date. At 65, she would have been born in 1795. This is
closer to her reported birth in 1791, but differs also with her age
in the 1850 census.
Family genealogies report that Felicity/Félicité died between 1860
and 1862. It was after November 1860, when she appears in the
census. Her death is reported variously as Desha County, Arkansas
(last recorded residence) and Arkansas Post, Arkansas County. We
know she lived in Arkansas Post earlier. I have not actually been
there to find a grave.
In April 2008, I found an old posting on a Dumond family discussion
list giving us the details of Félicité's estate settlement, which
provides a few more details about her descendants. The settlement
is reported in Probate Court March 1862; the exact date of the
probate is not given. That likely means she died in early 1862,
perhaps early March. The ultimate source of this report if an
article in the Grand Prairie Historical Society Bulletin in October
1980: "Some Descendants of Marie Messager." One paragraph of the
article reports on the estate of Louis and Félicité:
"LOUIS DUMONT died in Arkansas County, AR 1833-34. Because, under
the terms of their 1810 marriage contract, all property acquired by
the marriage community 'will remain intact for the one who will
survive', there was no probate at the time of the death of Louis to
assist in identifying issue. No records were generated until after
Felicite's death almost 30 years later."
The full text of the estate settlement for Félicité appears in the
Notes for Louis Dumont.
Jean-Baptiste Caillot was born in Illinois, a part of New France, one
year before the territory was taken from France by the British.
Jean-Baptiste was nicknamed LaChance ("dit LaChance," meaning
"called LaChance"). In English this means "Chance". Such names
were given to French soldiers. The "dit" name LaChance was given to
his father Nicholas Caillot dit LaChance, and he apparently
continued that as part of his name designation, as I have found was
common in some generations. A family genealogy shows the name "dit
LaChance" for all the sons of Nicholas. Sometimes the "dit" name
would become so well known that it would be taken as the name of the
family lineage in subsequent generations.
Nicholas was born in France, and came to Louisiana Territory of New
France as a young man, where he did spend some time in service as a
solider. A descendant, Mary Jo Freeman, states in her genealogy of
the Dumont family that Nicholas was enumerated in the 1798 census of
New France, where he stated he had been born in France. Mary Jo
from her research thought it likely Nicholas was born in the Rhône
River Valley.
Jean-Baptiste and all his siblings were born in Kaskasia. He was
born in 1762, while it was still French territory.
Nicholas married Marianne Giard about 1741 in Kaskasia, Illinois,
(now Randolph County,) New France, where Marianne was born. Mary Jo
says that Nicholas and Marianne moved to Sainte Geneviève, Missouri,
with Jean-Baptiste, after they married. Factors seem to indicate
this would be after Jean-Baptiste's second marriage, to Therèse
Gossiau, on 23 July 1787. This would make their move likely in the
winter of 1787.
In 1803, the year Louisiana Territory was purchased by the USA,
Jean-Baptiste is listed by his anglicized name, John B Caillot. He
and Therèse were living at that time on a land grant in New Madrid
County, Missouri Territory, USA.
For excellent details on Nicholas and his family, see Mary Jo
Freeman,

We know that James Daniel Green's wife Eliza Arilla Bridgman died in
1914. In the 1920 census, he is reported wife a different, younger
wife named Lillie. There is no wife named Lillie reproted in family
genealogy and notes provided by a descendant, Houston Green. But
Hattie Cain could have been named Lillie Hattie (and Hattie would be
short for Harriet).
There is a problem in the definite identity of the wife reported in
1920. The Green genealogy provided by Houston Green reports that
James Daniel did not marry Hattie until 29 November 1921. Perhaps
the family recorded the date wrong or misread it in transcribing it
from the Family Bible, which is stated to be the source of the
information. But their daughter Mary Louise (Mollie) was not born
until 1923, which matches better with a marriage in 1921.

home address is also the same as his. James' second wife was Lillie
Harriet Cain. This matches perfectly. Arilla died in 1914, so if
James was married, this would be Lillie Harriet Cain, his second
wife.
In the 1920 census, Lillie is also reproted as his wife. However,
here it reports she is age 23 and married at age 23, meaning it
would have been 1919. But that is only one year differnent. The
date of the Draft registration is 18 September 1918. As discussed
below, the age of 23 is also 4 years younger than the date of birth
on Lillie's grave.
At any rate, we know they were married before 1920, so the error is
in the Green family records as reproted by Houston. It may have
been written down wrong orignally at a later date, or rememebred
later as a whole list of dates and informaton was being written or
recompiled, and perhaps miscopied. We have to allow a date as early
as at least 1918, since James himself reported he was married. I
must report the earlier date of 1918, since we know they werwe
already marreid by September of that year.

The wife Lillie here is only 23 years old, about one year older than
James' oldest son Jacob Andrew. This would make her born about
1897. But the gravestone of Hattie Green in Curtis Cemetery says
she was born in 1893. Lillie Green was born in Texas, her father in
Oklahoma and her mother in Texas. We do not have any information on
Hattie Cain's parents' birth states.
In Letter 8 extra notes Bety Hess refers to Jim Green's wife as
Rillie Bridgeman: "I remember Jim Green's wife's name. She was
Rillie Bridgeman." I found her as well as Jim's second wife in
Cemetery Records for Parker County.
Rillie is Arilla, Jim's first wife, buried in City Greenwood
Cemetery. Born Dec 6, 1876, died Jun 27, 1914, noted as "wife of J
D Green." In 1910 the wife of James D Green is transcribed by
Ancestry as Leya R, but this is probably meant to be Liza R. The R
would be for Rillie, a nickname for Arilla, by which Betty Jackson
Hess refers to James' wife in her letters. Birth year from the age
of Liza R in the 1910 census is abt 1877, which matches the
gravestone birth date of Dec 6, 1876.
In the Curtis Cemetery records you sent me last October, we find
Jim's second wife Hattie, which Betty refers to on p 2 of Letter 8.
"Jim Green married Hatty Lane." (This could be Cane, in Betty's
unsteady handwriting. And in September 2008, Houston Green, a
descendant of JD Green sent family information that gave Hattie's
name as Hattie Cain.)
The Curtis Cemetery register lists Green, Hattie Harriet (and we
know Hattie is a nickname for Harriet, also). Annotation on the
grave/register gives her husband. That might be why we did not
recognize it earlier, since we did have Letter 8 with her name at
that time. No maiden name is given either, so that link was hidden.
Hattie/Harriet was born on November 20, but they have no year. She
died on February 4, 1928. [This death date matches the date given
in family information from Houston Green] This places her as the
second wife of Jim Green, since Rillie died in 1914. I have not yet
found Jim/James in 1930 to confirm his widow status or other
details. We do, however, already have Andrew separately with his
wife Essie (called Effie, as you note, by Betty, probably just due
to absent-minded association with the phonetic similarity of her
sister's name). The picture is fairly complete.
This would mean that Rillie is the wife (Leya R) in the 1910 census
for James D Green. The second wife in the 1920 census might Hatty
under another name of Lillie.
