Notes for Lucinda HANEY

One genealogy provides some helpful information on some of the Winter
family that appears to be from family sources (limited documentation
provided), but has some anomalies. For instance this tree reports
that Lucinda Haney, wife of Wiley B Winter and mother of Nelson, was
born in New Jersey, while the only documentation provided in the
tree is the 1880 census. This census, like all documentation,
reports her born in Tennessee, as well as both her parents. The
date here also differs from age information in censuses. She was
born about 1829 or 1830.

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/9058309/person/651142341

Lucinda's husband Wiley B Winter died sometime between the 1870 and
1880 censuses. In 1880 she is a widow on the farm with one son,
Nelson, who is farming in Montague County, Texas, on the Red River.

In 1900 and 1910 Lucinda is living with her son James in Hughes
County, Oklahoma. In both these censuses the family name is
reported as Winters, rather than Winter as in all previous
documentation in censuses or Texas land documents for her husband
Wiley.

Three nephews are also living with James, two named Winters: James
age 23 and Thomas age 21. The third is Bose (?) Taylor age 25. The
latter's first name is very faded and unreadable.

Note that her birthday as reported here has been read by some
genealogy compilers as July 1824, but her age is 70! The age is
consistent with other censuses, meaning her birthday would be 1829.
The year here has been misinterpreted because the top of the 9 is
faded and on first glance can appear unclosed. The age matches
every other census, where her age puts her birth year at 1829-30,
except for 1880, which would be 1832.

Notes for Mollie Walker HANNAH

After some time after the death of her husband, Molly moved in with
her daughter Mary Gracy Jackson, whose husband Enoch died in 1927.

In the 1930 census, Hannah is a widow, living with her widowed
daughter Mary. The son Jeff was originally listed as Head of the
household, although that was corrected later to make Mary head. But
the relationship of the others in the household was still given in
reference to Jeff. So Molly Gracy is listed as his grandmother.

The age for Molly here is close to what we would expect for Hannah,
born abt 1866 (from census age) and reported as age 69 here. To be
69 in 1930, she was born about 1861. Error on both ends means that
is pretty close. Her birthday was reported in the 1900 census as
December 1865, which would mean her age should have been 64 at the
time of the 1930 census

A Texas Death Index entry seems to match our listings for Molly and
Hannah W with the name Millie Walker Hannah Gracy, died 14 January
1940 in Wilbarger County, Texas, just over the Texas border and a
bit west from Love County where we have all the other reports of her.

Notes for James Marshall HARKINS

Sources are spotty for James Marshal Harkins. But some family
genealogies, report him born in South Carolina, matching the 1850
census report.. Reports for an alternative birthplace are North
Carolina and Georgia. South Carolina is most surely the correct
state. Some family sources spell his middle name Marshal while
others have Marshall.

In the 1850 census, James Harkins is living next door to his widowed
mother Nancy and her two other sons Tilman R and Asbury B Harkins.

A couple of Harkins family genealogies report the full name of James
Marshal's wife as Sarah M Bartles. Few sources are documented for
the information in many of the genealogies, but the clarity and
detail of the information presented in one or two reflects family
sourcing and credibility.

One by Brendy Martinez provides some details about family members
and death locations. But notice that this death date cannot be

Some genealogies (like the one noted above) report the death of
James Marshall Harkins in 1947. But note this could not be the same
person! I suspect this is a grandson, but have not tried to follow
the children of John (born 1818-19) and Sarah. The Alabama Death
Records report that a James M Harkins died on 22 May 1947 in
Jefferson County (Birmingham). Several genealogies report he died
on 20 May 1947 in De Kalb County, Alabama. It appears that the
latter was his address of residence at the time of death, but he
died in Birmingham, probably in hospital. I have not been able to
figure out why this date is two days earlier than the death
certificate reports.

Alabama Deaths, 1908-59
Volume 20, Certificate #9504
James M Harkins
Death 22 May 1947
Jefferson County

One genealogy reports that James M died in Shelby County, Alabama,
but the date of death is in 1947, when he would have been 128 years
old!
