I have had difficulty finding information Benjamin Carpenter. There are several genealogies with information that cannot be correct. Most have the date of birth of Benjamin's wife Sarah Elizabeth McFarland as 1768, two years before the birth of her first child! and their marriage as in 1788, after the birth of all the children except the last in 1799. Of course, no documentation or discussion is included. There may have been a first wife, and the name Sarah McFarland may not even be correct. Most genealogies report that both Ben and his wife Sarah McFarland were born in Virginia. But some have other places, The following genealogy, for instance has what appear to be credible information on Sarah McFarland. But it has the birthplace of Benjamin as Long Island, New York. At least one other reports birth in New Jersey. Other sources for the Carpenters indicate Ben and Sarah (if that was the correct name for his wife) were born in Virginia. It appears that various genealogies have mixed two or more lines of Carpenters. Sarah Elizabeth McFarland Birth 1750 in Shenandoah, Virginia Death 1815 in Anson, North Carolina Spouse Benjamin Carpenter 1750-1832 Birth 1750 in Long Island City, Queens, New York Death 1832 in Amherst, Amherst, Virginia Son Enoch Carpenter 1770-1824 -- Krise-Bennett, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/9167840/person/189070690 The death place here in Amherst, Virginia, matches that reported by genealogies reporting his birth in Virginia. So was our Benjamin Carpenter born in Virginia, or in New York (or elsewhere)

She was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, which she lived until her marriage, and was the daughter of Mr. R.C. and Mrs. Harriet Ann Carson, of that city. We have seldom to perform a more painful duty than to record the death of this most lovely and accomplished lady. Nearly seven years ago she came among us, a bride and a stranger, whom we soon learned to love and appreciate, on account of her many rare and distinguished virtues. The faithful manner in which she discharged the duties of her sphere as a wife, mother, friend. neighbor, and as a member of society, was such make her early death to be deeply lamented by this whole community, as well as those more immediately bereaved. In the days of her health, as well as in her sickness, she exemplified the beauties, the virtues, and the greatness of the religion of Jesus Christ. Her modest and exemplary life speaks to us with all the moral force of one who walked in daily communion with and fellowship with God. Her piety, like her whole character, was unaffected, simple, earnest. It flowed in a deep current and permeated her whole being. Her trust was wholly in Jesus Christ, and to follow His teachings was the very essence of her existence. To a highly educated and intelligent mind (for she had been thoroughly educated), the graces of religion were added, so that the combination of all her gifts, both of nature and of grace, constituted her character one of the most attractive, as indeed it was one of the rarest beauty. It was as natural for her to be gentle and charitable and refined as it was for her to breathe. Her earnestness was such that in all the relations of life she did everything as unto God. Wholly unselfish and modest, it was her wont to esteem others better than herself. During all the long months of her illness, no murmur escaped her lips. She recognized her sufferings as from God, and, though she greatly desired to live and to be spared to her husband and children, who were dearer to her than her own life, yet she also declared herself entirely resigned to God's will concerning her and hers. It was in this frame of faith and resignation that she passed to the state of heavenly rest, where she awaits the coming of the loved ones left on earth. May the God of mercy, in the exercise of whose mysterious providence, this beloved wife and mother has been called, hence, comfort, sustain and guide our friends so sadly bereaved. H.
