This seems to indicate that she was born the month of the census (I think April 15 was the actual census date), or in March, at least less than one month before the official census date. But the date of birth on her grave in Oakdale Cemetery gives her birth as 24 February 1910. Perhaps the scrunched up writing in the census is meant to be 2/12. It is squeezed by the fraction above indicating the age of Ernest, 1 4/12 (1 year and 4 months), which carries into the line below. A bigger problem is that her gravestone says she died on 18 March 1910, over a month before this census record was entered!

He had kinfolks in Idabel. I later learned he owned a ranch there. His occupation in the draft registration is given as Stockman. In June of that year he registered in Idabel, the county seat of McCurtain County, Oklahoma, in the southeast corner of the state. He gives his address as Bismark, McCurtain, Oklahoma, but we know that he maintained his primary residence in Kiowa County, Oklahoma, in the west central part of the state. In his draft registration he gives his wife Sallie's address (registered as nearest relative) as Mountain View, Oklahoma. Further, we have seen that in 1920 he is enumerated with Sallie in their home in Mountain View, Kiowa County. They are enumerated in Kiowa again in 1930. I interpreted his occupation in the draft registration as Stockman. To clarify this, I was later informed by Charles O Christian, a descendant of Cleve's cousin, that Cleve owned a ranch near Wright City, Oklahoma. In January 2008, Charles reported to me that his father had told him of an incident in which Cleve had been a member of a sheriff's posse and was injured in a shootout with a criminal the posse was pursuing. More details of the event unfolded as Charles talked with his brother about this and traced down newspaper articles about the incident. News stories reporting this incident in two local papers specifically state that Cleve lived in Mountain View but owned a ranch near Wright City. Two stories in local McCurtain County papers detail the story, the Valliant Tribune and the McCurtain Gazette (Idabel). The stories appeared in the issues of Wednesday, 16 August, 1922. The incident occurred on August 14, 1922. An article in the McCurtain Daily Gazette, Idabel, Oklahoma, said he was at the ranch on business when a shooting occurred and he was asked to join a posse. On Sunday late afternoon 13 August 1922, a man named Clayton Thompson had killed two people on a farm owned by Sheriff Bud Felker's brother. Cleve owned a farm next door to Felker's farm. This was about 6 miles north of Wright City, Oklahoma, in McCurtain County. Cleve, as a member of the posse, was driving the car containing Sheriff Felker, a deputy named Richard Jones and Cleve's friend John Bowling on their way to arrest the shooter in Wright City, Oklahoma. It seems that Cleve was asked to join the posse because he knew the shooter. The sheriff also knew Thompson. They met Thompson walking on the road into Wright City, with a 30-30 rifle in his hand, which had been used to kill the farm manager and an 18-year-old worker. The four men approached Thompson in Cleve's car, and spoke with him initially. However, Thompson shot the sheriff twice, killing him with the first shot. A 3rd shot hit Cleve in the lower abdomen. Before he ran out of ammunition, he shot Bowling in the shoulder. The shooter got away from this encounter, but was later shot by Deputy Jones as he resisted when Jones tried to apprehend him. Thompson died the next day in the jail at Idabel, Oklahoma. Cleve and Bowling were taken to the Broken Bow, Oklahoma, hospital, where they recovered. On Wednesday after the Monday shootout, the Valliant Tribune reports on Cleve's condition: "Cleve Christian was shot through the body and probably fatally wounded." Cleve did recover, however. The McCurtain Gazette reported that Cleve was initially paralyzed from the waist down, due to the inflammation and trauma, but the doctor's said he would fully recover, he apparently did. -- Full story from the McCurtain Gazette transcribed here, http://home.centurytel.net/lilla/1922_newspaper_ValliantMcCurtainCoOK_GeorgeWMoye_ConstableOfValliant_transcript.pdf A later article (date uncertain) in the Valliant paper reports that Cleve passed through Valliant, Oklahoma, en route to Enid, Oklahoma, stating he was able to walk but still weak and that the bullet was still in his body. This story also states that the bullet which hit Cleve was not the third one as the earlier story said, but the second one which hit Sheriff Felker in the back, went on through his body and hit Cleve. The first shot, in Felker's temple, had killed him. As he slumped forward, the second shot hit him in the back. The sheriff was in the back seat of the car, with his window down talking to Thompson before things got wild. Cleve was driving the car. This would mean that the bullet had to go through the sheriff's body, the front seat and into Cleve's body. Perhaps the velocity of a 30-30 shot could do this. One sumamry version of the story says Thompson had actually got into the car before the shooting began. ------------------- A. W. Felker, Sheriff McCurtain County Sheriff's Office Sunday night, August 13, 1922, Sheriff Felker had gone to Wright City to investigate a double murder committed by a man named Clayton Thompson. About 8 A.M. the next morning, Monday, August 14th, Felker, his Undersheriff Richard Jones and a citizen named Cleve Christian found Thompson walking down a road carrying a 30-30 rifle. For unknown reasons the officers allowed Thompson to get in their car with the rifle. Shortly after Sheriff Felker started driving off, Thompson shot him in the head, killing him instantly. Thompson then shot Christian but Deputy Jones was able to escape the car. Jones took cover and watched Thompson go into a near by restaurant. When Jones tried to arrest Thompson inside of the restaurant they struggled over the rifle and Thompson was shot. Christian recovered from his wound but Thompson died the next night in his jail cell in Idabel. His wife and five children survived Sheriff Felker. -- Oklahoma Law Enforcement Memorial, http://www.oklemem.com/Agencies/McCurtain%20County%20Sheriffs%20Office.htm ------------------- Charles says, "I think Cleve came by to see my Dad when he got out of the hospital because my brother remembers Dad talking about Cleve not being able to walk very well." 1930 Federal Census, Kiowa County, Oklahoma, 9 April, Dill, District 4, page 5B, Hse #101, Fam #102 Christian, Cleve Head M W 46 TX MS MS Farmer [Note that birthplace of both parents has changed!] Christian, Sallie Wife F W 36 OK TX TX Christian, Cleva daughter F W 17 OK TX OK Christian, Harvey son M W 14 OK TX OK Christian, Vernon son M W 10 OK TX OK Christian, Harold son M W 7 OK TX OK Christian, James son M W 5 OK TX OK Both of Cleve's parents are reported as born in Mississippi in 1930, but Texas in 1920. Note that in the quote above Anne Thompson also refers to Henry and Ida as Hathaway's parents. But other memories in her family and from her childhood indicate that Hathaway was the son of Rosa. This census reports that relationship, and makes better sense of Hathaway's age, being born in 1912, he is in the grouping with other children of Rosa Mae, John O'Neal born in 1909 and Roy F born in 1908. Anne remembers a Robert Lloyd also, but we cannot find information on him in public records. In our discussion of family memories and confused public records, Anne and I came to confirm Hathaway as the son of Rosa Mae and William V Christian. In 2018, when the 1940 census record for him was found, this seemed to be confirmed. Hathaway Chrisitan, with a near match in age at 26 (a couple of years younger than his actual reported birth date indicates), was reported with Rosa Christian, who was reported as a widow. Floyd Christian was reported in the same household, also reported as a grandson of Rosa's father. He appears to be the child reported in 1910 and 1920 as Roy F Christian. In the 1870 census, Henry's family is living in Titus County, Texas. His birth place is reported as Mississippi. But in 1880, 1900 and 1910, he is reported as born in Texas. I would think the earlier census was correct. And the Christian clan did move into East Texas from the east in about this time. 1870 Federal Census, Titus County, Texas, 6 August, Mt Pleasant, page 161, Hse/Fam #1120. Son Matthew's name here is Henry M, but in 1930, he is listed as Matthew H. On his WWI Registration card, his name is only Matthew, but he signs the card as H M Christian. This census tells us Henry and Ida (Willie I) have been married 23 years. This would mean they married about 1887. They married in Texas, where we see Willie and Henry were born. We will see there was also another likely older, child who is not reported here, but we will likely find in the 1900 census. I see that the first son shown here, Willie N, was born about 1891. This matches Neil in the 1900 census. So we can tell his full name was William Neil. The census tells us that two of their children have died early. There is another living child who does not show up in this census. This is the daughter named Martha, a year younger than Neil in the 1900 census. With the spread of 3 years between marriage and the birth of son Willie, it seems likely that the two children who died were also born before Willie. We see further that son Willie was born in Arkansas. This helps us reconstruct their trek westward. It appears that Henry and Ida were married in Alabama, her home state. I have not yet found their marriage registration. I do not have information to specify more specifically when they moved into Arkansas. But it would have been between marriage (about 1887) and the birth of Willie N (about 1891). We have nothing at this point to tell us where they were in Arkansas. Matthew (Henry M) was born only about one year later, so we can say they moved to Texas about 1892, before the birth of Matthew in August. Members of this family were in Cass County to the south. Some of the Christians moved to Indian Territory about 1892-93. Cousin Joseph Asa Jenkins was there before the birth of his daughter Sallie in December 1893 in Wapanucka, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory. Henry Harvey's half-brother William James (Bill or Willie), married to Joe Jenkins' sister, moved to Chickasaw Nation around the same time, or a few months earlier, as the Jenkinses. Bill and Amanda moved from Cass County, Texas, to Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, about 1891. Their child Iler was the last one born in Texas in about August 1890. The next child Charles (recorded in 1900 as Henry C) was born in Chickasaw Nation in May 1892. We know from the birth of Matthew in Texas that is was after August 1892 that Henry Harvey and Willie Ida moved to Chickasaw Nation. It probably was not long after, since other close members of their family were moving at this time. The Christian and Jenkins families moved into Indian Territory through what became Love County (north of Gainesville, Texas) and Stephens County, on northwest to Kiowa and Washita Counties. The Christians were in Kiowa earlier, and the Jenkins clan joined them there later after an extended time in Stephens (around Marlow) and Grady county areas. Some of these clans wound up in Chickasha, Grady County, and points north around Oklahoma City. We find that Henry moves back east. He moves to McCurtain County, Oklahoma, across the Red River from his childhood Texas home. It would be interesting to know what led him back to the southeast corner of Oklahoma by 1920. In the 1920 census, Henry and Ida's daughter Rosa Mae is in the household, with her son Hathaway, who is reported as Henry's son, instead of grandson. Rosa Mae has divorced her husband William V, who has moved to Parker County, Texas, by the time of this census, and married this German immigrant Jack Schultz (spelled Shultz here). 1920 Federal Census, McCurtain County, Oklahoma, 12 June, White Township, Idabel Town, District 157, page 17A, Hill St, Hse #258, Fam #361 Christian, Henry Head M W 50 TX England Miss Christian, Ida F W 47 TX Miss Ala Christian, Matthew H Son M W 25 Divorced TX TX TX Chauffeur, Service Car Christian, Hathaway Son M W 7 Single TX TX TX [born abt 1913] Shultz, Jack Boarder [son-in-law] M W 34 Immigrated to US 1890 Naturalized 1891 Germany Germany Germany Carpenter Shultz, Rosa Mae Boarder [daughter] M W 31 TX TX TX The last child's name is scrawled so badly it is hard to tell what was intended. We get a birthday for Iler in the 1900 Census, where her family is living in Union Township. 1900 Census, Washita County, Oklahoma, 3 August, Union Township, District 211, page 13A, Hse/Fam #189 Willie Christain Head W M Oct 1857 42 Miss England GA Farmer Iler Christain [sic] Aug 1890 9 Tex Eng Miss Note the error in father's birthplace. On her father's line, his birthplace is shown as Mississippi and for his father it is in England. But on all the children, the enumerator put the children's father's birthplace as England also, ignoring that he had put Mississippi for the father's birthplace! In the later censuses the father's birthplace is reported correctly. This birth date differs from that found written in her uncle's Bible. In William (Bud) Jenkins' Bible there is an entry showing the birth of Eler Christian, 17th Nov 1888 (reported in the private paper Jenkins Family History by Harold Keith Chritian). The birth date of August 1890 is confirmed by a birth certificate discovered by Harold Keith Christian, which he reports in the Peter Christian Family History (unpublished). Thanks to Judy Oldziewski for transcribing and providing the text of this history: "In an 1890 Record of Birth on file in Cass County, TX (Delayed reports, volume 29, page 178) for Bill?s daughter Iler Frances, his age was given as 42 on 10 August 1890 (date of the record)." This report gives us the actual day of birth in addition to the moth and year reported in the census, and also provides Iler's middle name. 1910 Federal Census, Washita County, Oklahoma, 18 May, Oakdale Township, District 263, page 20B-21A, Hse #309, Fam #390 Iler F Christian 20 Tex Miss Miss The age difference makes me question the birth date that was recorded in the 1900 census. Iler is reported as 9 years old in 1900, with a birth date of August 1890. The census date is 1 August, so that matches. Yet in 1910, the census is earlier in the year, May, yet she is reported as already 20 years old! In April 2013 I ofund one genealogy who gave a source for Iler's death information. The wording here would indicate either there was a week between the death and the funeral or they had the funeral the same day he died. The brief obit was published on Thursday, 10 days after the death. Since there is no time-frame verb used with the date for the funeral, I assume it means the past Tuesday, 23 November. A full obituary was published in the Arizona Silver Belt. The obituary is dated 23 November, but the publication says it is the issue of 25 November. This clarifies that the funeral was a full two weeks after the death, occurring on Tuesday 30 November 2004. This also tells us that his parents moved from Oklahoma to Arizona in 1930. ---------------------- Obituaries Tuesday, November 23, 2004 Ishmael Leland "Ish" Christian, 82, of Globe died Nov. 16, 2004, at Heritage Health Care Center.
