This marriage information cannot be right, since that is 15 years after the
birth of their son Lewis.

Another historical source reports that Thomas Terry, son of Joseph Terry and
Judith Crawford was born in 1740 and die3d in 1789 and was named to a woman
named Ann. There are probably several indivdiuals of near age and the same
name that have confused the sources and our family structure.

Notes for Ada Mae DANCY

Broderbund Family Archive #110, Vol. 1 A-L, Ed. 6, Social Security Death Index:

Criswell, Ada, Birth 23 Sep 1926, Death 30 Dec 1993, Last known residence
DeWitt, Arkansas, 72042; Social Security #: 432-42-1990 Issued in Arkansas

The online version of the SSDI at Ancestry.com reports the date of death as 31
December 1993. This appears to correct a mis-transcription in the earlier
disk-based database.

1930 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 14 April, Prairie Township,

The age for Ada May (Ada Mae) is a bit uncertain. It appears that the number
first written (larger and has a line through it) was a 3. This would be
correct with the birth date reported by the Social Security Death Index of 23
September 1926. But it looks like the second number written, which is smaller
and more scrawly, is an 8. This would not fit. Her age in 1930 should have
been 3 at census time in April.

Living next door to this family, in house #68, family #69, are Robert and Leta
Criswell and their daughter Alice. Two doors from them on the other side is
the one-person household of Flora Dancy, who appears to be Travis' mother, a
widow.

Notes for Charles Ozias DANCY

Every record has his name as Ozias, or a phonetic variation like Ozion. In
November 2018, I found a record for one of his daughters that reported his
name as Charles O Dancy.

U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007
Lillian Roark [Mary Lillian Dancy]
Birth 22 May 1904 Bristol, Sullivan, Tennessee
Death May 1980
Father Charles O Dancy
Mother Flora A Hutchins
SSN 412080937
01 Nov 1972 Name listed as LILLIAN ROARK

Bristol, Tennessee is on Interstate Highway 81, on the border with Virginia (a
joint city with Bristol, Virginia). It is near the point of the
Kentucky-Virginia-Tennessee border, Also note that the surname of Lillian's
mother is reported as Hutchins, but other records indicate her maiden name was
Farmer. Florinda was only 16 when she married Ozias, so the name Hutchins
must be her second married name, as she survived Ozias by almost 20 years.

I first found information on Ozias in the 1930 census in Prairie Township,
Arkansas County, Arkansas, when his wife was a widow living next door to their
son Travis. From Travis' information, I learned that Ozias was born in
Kentucky.

I then found Ozias and his wife in Indiana in 1910. I learned in the process
that her full name was not Flora, as reported in 1930, but Florinda. I found
them a few houses away from their single son Travis, age 27, living as a
single on his own farm.

This 1910 census also reported that Ozias was born in Kentucky, as well as
both his parents. With this information I searched for Ozias in Kentucky.

I found Ozias with his parents in Wayne County, Kentucky, in 1860, when he was
4 years old. There were also two sisters, Mary Jane 5 and Eliza J 1, and a
brother Joe Davis 3. His parents here are listed as A J and Margaret Dancy.
They are living near Monticello, which is their post office.

1860 Federal Census, Wayne County, Kentucky, 10 August, PO Monticello, page
168, Hse #1117, Fam #1109
A J Dancy 28 M Day Laborer $300 personal estate born Kentucky
Margaret Dancy 23 F Housewife born Kentucky
Ozias Dancy 4 M born Kentucky [b abt 1856]

I then was able to find Ozias' parents in the Kentucky marriage register,
where I found them as Andrew J Dancy and Margaret Brown.

I found Ozias and the other children with their mother in the 1870 census
living with Ozias' older sister Mary Jane Massie in Warrick County, Indiana.
Ozias was reported in 1870 as Silas. This has led some genealogies to report
Silas as a middle name, when in fact his full name was Charles Ozias Dancy.
This would seem to indicate that Ozias' father died before the 1870 census.

1870 Federal Census, Warrick County, Indiana, 13 September, Skelton Township,

In 1910 they were are still in Skelton Township of Warrick County, Indiana.
They had no children in the household, but their single son Travis was renting
a farm a few houses away from them.

1910 Federal Census, Warrick County, Indiana, 29 April, Skelton Township,

Because this census gives the numbers of years in this marriage, we can say
that Ozias and Florinda married in about 1882. The actual record reports the
date Ozias and Florinda married as November 1881. Travis was 27 in 1910, and
that would mean he was born about 1883. The actual birth date is 27 June
1882.

Indiana, Index to Select Marriages, 1780-1992

I later found Travis and his parents in 1920 in Prairie Township. This gave
me some timeline for their move to Arkansas. They were in Indiana in the 1910
census but in Prairie for the February 1920 census enumeration. It turns out
that they were married in Indiana in 1910 and moved to Arkansas County,
Arkansas, where the newspaper item about their move said Travis and Lillie
made their residence in to DeWitt. But they actually moved to a rural area
near St Charles, on the White River, east of DeWitt, the southern county seat.

In the 1920 census Ozias' name was spelled differently, as Ozrons.

Ozians Dancy
Death 27 Jun 1928 Arkansas County

Note that the death index reports the year of death as 1928, but the
gravestone reports it a year later. I have found this in other cases.
Usually i seems the stone was put up later, maybe after some years, and the
stonecutters used the current year or otherwise got the year wrong. Besides
that, the manager of Ozias' Find a Grave memorial reports that the burial was
on 28 June 1928, while the gravestone reports the death was not until 29 June.

he gravestone for Ozias had the wrong date of death. The stone reads 29 June
1929, but besides being a year after than reported by the Arkansas Death
Index, he day is a day later than the burial. Te day of death appears to have
been 27 June 1928.
