1850 Federal Census, Desha County, Arkansas, 1 November, Chester Township, page 140, Hse/Fam #268 John Stokes 30 M Farmer born Tennessee Mary Stokes 28 F born Arkansas John Dumond 4 M born Arkansas 1860 Federal Census, Desha County, Arkansas, 2 August, Chester Township, PO Redfork, page 13, Hse/Fam #95 Felicita [Félicité] Dumond 65 F Housekeeper $6000 Real Estate $1200 Personal born Arkansas John Dumond 14 M At the time of Félicité's death in 1862, the estate probate settlement states that Mary Haines (daughter of Mannett Dumont and DB Haines) and John L Dumond are in the care of guardian Isaac Love, the husband of Félicité's daughter Virginia. It is not clear who this John L Dumond is. But he appears to be the one later enumerated in the Love household in Yell County in the census of 1870. John L and Mary are each given a full share of Félicité's estate. An analysis of the estate information appears in "Some Descendants of Marie Messager," in the 1980 issue of the Grand Prairie Historical Society. Thanks to Ralph Dumond for posting this on the Dumont Discussion list on RootsWeb. This analysis also expresses uncertainty as to the identity of this John L Dumond, commenting "may be issue." He could not, however, have been a son of Félicité, since Louis died in 1836. He is likely another grandson, but I have not been able to connect him to any of Félicité's male children. But unlike the other grandchildren Elizabeth and John, he receives a full share. John L does not appear in any additional documentation I have found for his earlier life. He has not appeared so far in any 1860 censuses. The probate statement further mentions two other grandchildren, John and Elizabeth Dumond, who are children of Pierre (Peter) Dumont and his wife Mary Pinot. In 1850 (see above) they are enumerated as Mary and John, in the household of John Stokes, the second husband of widow Mary Pinot Dumont. The estate settlement gives no ages for any persons This John and Elizabeth are given half a share each from Félicité's estate (being the grandchildren of her son Pierre). In 1870, we find a John L Dumond, age 13, and thus born about 1857, who may be this John L Dumond from the estate settlement. But the age of 13 does not match that John son of Pierre and Mary, who should be 23 or 24 in 1870. In 1870 John L has moved to Yell County, near Dardanelle, with his supposed aunt and uncle, Isaac and Virginia Love. He is working on their farm and going to school there. This would appear to be the son of Pierre Dumond and Mary Pinot, who both died when John was young. 1870 Federal Census, Yell County, Arkansas, 5 July, Gally Rock Township, PO Dardanelle, page 7 (563), Hse #59, Fam #53 Love, Isaac 45 M W Farmer $18,000 Real Estate $1000 Personal born Tennessee Love, Virginia Love 40 F W Keeping Home born Arkansas Dumond, John L 13 M W Works on Farm b Arkansas Attended school during last year

But we have already seen that she was recorded in the 1900 census! That census says that Lillie was born in April 1900 (though it also says she is 2 months old, which does not match a 1 June census date). Some family genealogies also report an exact date of birth as 27 April 1900. This is probably one of the many indications we have in the censuses that people were not as fact-oriented and time-managed as in later 20th century American culture. 1940 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 11 May, LaGrue Township, District 1-17, Burks-Almyra Rd, page 20B, Hse #383, Owns $1000 Long, Arthur Head M W 47 Grade 7 b Arkansas same place in 1935 Rice Farm Operator Long, Lillie Wife F W 40 Grade 5 b Arkansas same place in 1935 Long, Claude Son M W 21 Grade 6 b Ark same place in 1935 Farm Laborer Long, Marvin Son M W 17 Grade H2 b Ark same place in 1935 Farm Laborer Long, Gladys Dau F W 15 Grade 8 b Ark same place in 1935 Long, Carl Son M W 12 Grade 6 b Ark same place in 1935 Long, Bettie Lou Dau F W 9 Grade 3 b Ark same place in 1935
