Anderson Edmonds

Edmonds researcher Shirley, who has cooperated with me on several forays into
the Edmonds-Strange connections, comments:
"The entire Edmonds clan except one is missing from the 1850 census. Which
leads one to believe they were all together and related. No one is sure who
Anderson (Jefferson Co, TN) Edmonds' parents are.."

Anderson is thought by most to have died some time before 1880. One avid
Edmonds researcher believes he did not die but moved away form this family.

"I'm looking for help with his [William Maston Edmond's] father, Brice
Anderson Edmonds, last seen in Jefferson in 1865 when signing affadivit in
support of Anne EDMONDS Phillips' application for widow's benefits for late
husband Jeremiah. I'm trying to prove he didn't die in Jefferson but next
appears in 1873 in Hamilton marrying Margaret Shipley. Last seen on 1900
census. All help appreciated. Thanks. Shirley SSBOSCO@AOL.COM"

I had no information on this C Edmonds. Going by age and birth information
here, it appears that C Edmonds is a second wife of JC. After reporting this
I ran upon a contribution to a discussion list that filled in a few details,
confirming that this was the second wife. Shirley, in this comment, also
contributes the full name of Edie's parents.

Surnames: HALL, CHAMBERS, BRIMER, EDMONDS, DEAN, MOORE

James Campbell Edmonds m2: Catherine WHITE. Married: 26 NOV 1859. She is too
young to be Edy and Fannie's mother.

Originally it was thought the name was James Cameron Edmonds. In July 2011,
Shirley and I had been in contact working together on Edmonds questions.
Shirley did some intensive onsite investigations in various record offices.
She could find no record of the name Cameron, but only Cam. There was some
association with the name Campbell, which has a local variant of Camel, so we
determined that was the middle name.

The 1870 Jefferson County, Tennessee, census reports her name as Edia, aka:
"Edy." The spelling Edy seems to represent what we now spell Edie. This is
supported by the entry in 1880, Eadie and definitely confirmed in 1900, Edie.

See more census reports in the Notes for Edie's husband William F Strange. I
found census reports for Edie and William for 1910 and 1920. See these in the
notes for William Henry Strange. Various family genealogies report her death
in Jefferson County, Tennessee, where she lived her whole life, on the date of
18 September 1925. Another Strange researcher pointed me to Edith's Death
Certificate, which I had not previously found online. It has now been
transcribed by FamilySearch, but the image does not yet appear on the site,
where I have found many public documents posted in the last year.

The date on the death certificate is 13 September 1925. Burial is reported as
15 September 1925. The certificate also confirms other details about her
family that are only partial from the various sources.

I note that her mother's name here is given as Cobb, while we had an earlier
indication that her name was Delia Hall. Shirley, whose comments I quote
above, comments on that too, and says the real Maiden name is Hall. Perhaps
there was a previous marriage.

According to some family sources, Edie is buried in Strange Cemetery on Muddy

Tennessee. I have not personally visited the cemetery.

Some genealogies list Elijah's wife's name as Nancy Magnolia, based on names
in censuses, apparently. But Nancy Mitchell's family is enumerated in Madison
in 1880, and she is named Nancy M, matching the two names later found for the
wife of the Spartanburg couple.

"I have been reading some written work on one of your pages and wanted to let
you know about Elijah L.Edmonds. He came to Fingerville, SC in Spartanburg
County because the textile mill went to NC and recuited with offers of housing
and jobs. My grandfather, Willard Emery Edmonds, was his son. In fact Willard
played textile baseball for the mill."
-- Jennie Leake, email message to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 23 Apr 2012

The 1910 census records Elijah's presence in Spartanburg County, South
Carolina. The details of this Elijah are very close to those known from other
sources for the son of Cam Edmonds and Katherine White. We find in the list
of children Jennie Leake's grandfather Willard. The children William and
Oscar match closely. George is close, with a 2-year age difference, within
the range we commonly find between censuses.

Thomas T of 1910 matches Andrew of 1900 in age, but not name. Dewey J
reported in 1910 should have been reported as about 1 years old in 1900, the
best match being to Andrew, age 2 in 1900. So that is uncertain. At least
one genealogy names one child as Andrew "Dewey."

Both husband and wife of the Spartanburg family match our Madison County
couple very closely. The wife is enumerated as Magnolia. Interestingly, too,
Elijah is here reported as born in Tennessee, matching the 1870 and 1880
censuses in Tennessee and North Carolina. In the 1900 census in North
Carolina, he was reported as born in North Carolina.

Elijah married Lizzie Webb after the death of "Maggie" in 1922. They had the
following children.

There is a death record in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, for an Elijah L
Edmonds, that closely matches this Elijah L Edmonds. But the parents of this
Elijah are reported to be Calvin Edmonds, of unknown birthplace, and Polly
White, born in Spartanburg. This is interesting, since the names do not match
known parents, but Polly White was Elijah's mother's mother, and his first son
is reported as named Calvin. These could have been errors by the informant, T
S Edmonds.

This Elijah was born in Newport, Tennessee, which matches our Edmonds line.
This Elijah's wife was Mrs Lizzie Webb Edmonds, which could have been a second
wife after Nancy Magnolia died. I have not found Nancy's death information.
All family genealogies I have seen consider this to be the same Elijah L
Edmonds.

Note that in the 1860 census, Fannie's age makes her born about 1848. In
1880, she is 29, which makes her birth year 1851, 3 years younger than
indicated by the 1860 census. The 1860 figure is likely more accurate, being
closer to her birth.

Fannie's mother died before 1860, when her father has remarried. But in the
1900 census, her birth date is June 1856. 1910 reports her 54, so born in
1856. The idea of her age shifted and then settled on a birth abt 1856. the
problem with this is that it is hard to believe her father in 1860 would
confuse an 8-year old child with a 12-year-old.

George W Edmonds was reported in the 1900 and 1910 censuses as a child of
Elijah Edmonds and his wife Nancy Mitchell. But he is not included in a list

age of 14 in 1910 does not match George's reported birth date of Nov 1893 in

Notes for James Cam EDMONDS

On his daughter Fannie's death certificate, James C is referred to as Cam.
Many have assumed this nickname referred to Cameron. Most genealogies have
the name as Cameron, some only the nickname commonly in records, Cam. But it
could be short for Campbell. This is what Edmonds researcher Shirley has
determined from her investigations.

Shirley has looked through records and archives and never find any instance of
Cameron, only Cam. But I have also found there is some association with
Campbell. And I have found records for a Campbell familiy as Camel.
“Camel” is a regional/dialectic pronunciation, a phonetic variation, for
“Campbell.” Adam Campbell in this genealogy is documented in records as
Adam Camel, and all his children with the last name Camel. The Cam middle
name for James likely stood for Campbell.

"My 4th great grandpa is David Edmonds birth Mar 22,1826, son of John &
Penelopy Edmonds, brother to James (Cam), John, George, Louisa, Polly, Elmore
& Shadrach. I'm not sure of David's exactly birth location, but he lived most
of his life around Piney, Loudon, Roane [County], Tennessee. He married Sarah
(Sallie) Thomas."

C Edmonds is James' second wife Catherine White. Delilah (or Delia) Hall was
the mother of daughters Edie and Fannie E.

There is a third child reported by some researchers, John P, born in August
1850, who would be 10 years old at census time in 1860. But he is in the
household of Delilah's supposed sister Annie. It seems likely that Delilah
died in childbirth with John, and his sister began raising him. Three months
later Cam married Katherine (Catherine) White, as reported in the marriage
record above.

Edmonds, Elijah R 5 M W b Tennessee [b abt 1865]
Edmonds, Martha M 2 F W b Tennessee [b abt 1868]

I have found most genealogies report James died in Jefferson County,
Tennessee. But his last two children are reported born in NC and his widow is
in NC in 1880. Their last child was born in 1867. There is some uncertainty,
though, because of discrepancies in the birth states reported for the older
children. William and Marcena (Martha) are reported born in North Carolina,
while Elijah, born between them, is reported born in Tennessee!

In the 1870 census, all three children were reported born in Tennessee. And
all other records of residence, including 1860-70 census, indicate they were
living in Jefferson. If the last two children really were born in North
Carolina, this would seem to indicate that James moved the whole family there
about 1875 and died there. I have not found a record of his burial.

Notice that in each census, Mary Ann gains 12 years in age. In 1900 she is 7

Note also that Martha is reported as born in July 1880, yet age is reported as
20 years old in the June 1900 census.

Note that his death certificate had no birth address. There are different
dates reported on different sources. Much information on genealogies is
wrong, and much undocumented. Edmonds researcher Shirley suggests the actual
birth date in August 1850, interpolated from various sources. (See note
below.)

John's wife Mary Reneau is reported by some genealogies to also be buried in
Hills Union Cemetry, but I cannot find a listing for her. There is one Mary
Edmonds, with no maiden name identified, but there are not dates on the stone,
and this does not seem likely to be the right one. Her date of death in the
undocumented genealogies in 1908, 9 years before John.

There is a discrepancy in the reported date of death on John's death
certificate and the gravestone. As noted in the transcriptions above, the
Death Certificate reports death on 15 February 1919, while the gravestone says
15 March 1919. Family researcher Shirley, who has collaborated with me on
research on the Edmonds lineage, has made these comments about John's details.
As she notes, I have found confusion in genealogies of Mary Reneau Edmonds
with Mary Ann Patterson Reneau

"His death certificate shows February 15, 1919, not March. His father is James
Campbell (NOT Cameron) Edmonds and mother appears to be Delila Hall. Father is
also seen as Camel in Jefferson court documents. 'Cam' is the father's name
shown on DC as it is with his 2 sisters, Edith (m: Wm Henry Strange) and Fanny
(not Falby--m: Henry Chambers). John's wife is Mary Ann Reneau (not Mary E.).
She is dau of Isaac Reneau and Melissa Newman. The children listed for John
and Mary Ann on old LDS IGI files and many trees actually belong to Aaron
Leander Reneau and Mary Ann Patterson. Few trees have them correct. His birth
is probably Aug 1850 based on all his censuses and a Southern Claims
Commission affidavit on behalf of his uncle-by-marriage, Christopher Miller."

Mary seems to match Minerva in the family list of chidlren. But the age of
the child reported as Minerva in 1910 is 2 years later that the 1895 birth
date reported in 1900. The 1895 datre matches that from the research and
famliy source of Suzanne Kennedy. The name Suzanne has is Minervia, and
obvious form of Minerva. Maybe Mary was her middle name.

mother widow Elizabeth (Lizzie) Webb, living with Lizzie's parents in the home

Odell is reported here as already 9 months old, his grave says he was born 10
