Clark Richards of Warren County, Illinois, a researcher of the Gossom and

Stella Petty Gossom Champion
Birth Aug. 20, 1920
Death Oct. 3, 2011, Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas, USA

Stella Gossom Petty Champion was born in DeWitt, AR., 91 years ago, the
daughter of E.L. and Lula Gossom.

Stella Gossom Petty Champion passed away on Monday, October 3, 2011, at
Arkansas Home Care in Little Rock.

Adventurous, opinionated and well-traveled are a few words to describe Stella
Champion. She loved the outdoors and hunting and trapshooting.

Champion, who was married to Hall of Fame inductee Julius Petty when he
recognized that she could shoot pretty good and entered her in trapshooting
competitions. In 1948 she had the highest score ever made by a woman in the
Grand American Handicap event. In 1951 she topped 243 other men and women to
win the handicap preliminary event of the Grand American Trapshoot. In
December of 1949 she was featured in an article titled "Life Goes Hunting in
Stuttgart, Arkansas" in LIFE magazine.

She owned and operated a beauty shop, but you might go in and she would be in
New York seeing a Broadway show. She loved to travel.

After marriage to Dr. W.T. Champion, they would travel to "met the first snow"
anywhere. But dancing was her all-time favorite and she did some competition
ballroom dancing in the 1980s.

To relax, she loved to paint pictures of animals on rocks. Her granddaughter,
Joy Lovett, always said she was a special, one-of-a-kind grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Julius Petty and Dr. W.T.
Champion; a son, Larry Powell; two brothers; and one sister.

Survivors include a daughter, Lois Lovett of Little Rock; four grandchildren;
four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Arrangments were by Turpin Funeral Home with a graveside service at Lone Tree
Cemetery chapel.

Notes for John Wylie GRACY

Wiley seems to be the middle name, though it is the one most found in records.
In 1920, he is enumeraterd in the census as John W. But usually he is Wiley,
or even wiley J as in 1900. In this census, Wiley's wife is listed as Hannah
W. But Hanna was her family name. You will see that in other censuses she is
named Mollie, a nickname for Mary. It may be that Mollie was actaully her
given name.

1900 Federal Census, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, 4 June, F1 Township

Gracy, Wylie J Head W M June 1861 38 Married 19 years TN England

Gracy, Jessie D Son W M Feb 1895 5 TX TN TX
Gracy, Thomas A Son W M Oct 1897 2 TX TN TX

The census tells us that Wylie and Hannah (Mollie) married about 1881. This
is consistent with the report of birth of their daughter Mary Frances in June
1882, according to Mary Frances' gravestone. Mary Frances and her husband
Enoch A Jackson are living in this household with them. Note that the census
reports her birth year as 1883, one year later, as we commonly find in the
1900 census.

Jackson, Enoch A Son-in-law W M Oct 1876 23 TX GA GA Farmer
Jackson, Mary F Daughter W F 16 June 1883 TX TN TX

Originally they were reported as in the same household but with a different
family number. Later corrections of the numbering in the census eliminated
the separate family number for Enoch and Mary.

1910 Federal Census, Love County, Oklahoma, 5 May, Washington Township,

Gracy, Claud Son M W 6 Single OK TN TX Farm Laborer [b abt 1904]

In 1920, Wiley is listed by his first name as John W. His birth state has now
changed from Tennessee to Alabama. We know this is the same person, however,
because the name of the wife Mollie and the children match. The variations of
names in this census tell us some more details about the family members.

1920 Federal Census, Love County, Oklahoma, 5 February, Hickory Township,
District 125, page 6A, Oswalt Road, Hse/Fam #102

Gracy, Ben G Son M W 18 Single OK AL TX Farmer [born abt 1802]
Gracy, Claud E Son M W 15 Single OK AL TX Farmer [born abt 1905]

We know from this record that Wiley's full name is John Wiley. Ben G here
matches Gardner in the 1910 census. We get a middle initial L for Jessie and
Claud's initial E. Note that Jessie L was reported as Jessie D in 1900.
Return to John Wylie GRACY

Notes for Mary Frances GRACY

In 1900 at the April census, Mary Frances Gracy has recently married her
husband Enoch A Jackson (reported as married 0 years). They are living with
her parents and 5 of her siblings in the same household, but enumerated as a
separate family.

1900 Federal Census, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, 4 June, Township 8,
District 151, page 2A, Hse/Fam #17
Jackson, Enoch A Son-in-law W M Oct 1876 23 Married less than 1 yr TX GA GA
Jackson, Mary F Daughter W F June 1883 16 Married less than 1 yr TX TN TX

This census reports her birth date as June 1883. The date on her gravestone,
however, is 26 June 1882. For some reason, the birth dates on very many of
these 1900 census reports are one year off. The same thing occurs with her
husband's birth date. The 1900 census above tells us that Wylie and Hannah
(Mollie) married about 1881 (married 19 years). This is consistent with the
report of birth of their daughter Mary Frances in June 1882, the date on Mary
Frances' gravestone. Mary Frances and Enoch Jackson are living in the Gracy
household.

In 1910, I find Enoch and Mary still in Love County, Oklahoma, in their own
household with their two sons:

In 1930, Mary is a widow and her widowed mother is living in her household.
Mary is head of the household as a widow with three children still at home.
The enumeration listing is unusual. Jeff is shown as head. The enumerator
wrote Jeff first, listing him as Head of the household with Mary as Mother.
Then he changed the relationships to show Mary as Head and Jeff as Son. But
he left the other relationships as he had originally entered them, in
relationship to Jeff. So Molly Gracy is reported as Grandmother, even though
now Mary has been redesignated as Head of the household.

They are living next door to her son William F and family.

Mary's gravestone presents her name as Mrs E A Jackson. She is buried in
Lakeview Cemetery, Love County, Oklahoma. But she died in Vernon, Wilbarger,
Texas. (See memorial at the end of these notes.)

Mary Frances' death certificate was found by my cousin Marion Mixon. The date
of birth on the certificate has a different year (1879) from that on the grave
(1882), but provides some excellent detail to fill out our understanding of
Mary Frances and her parents. The place of birth of both her parents is
specified, whereas before we had only the state. The date of death is also a
year later than the Find a Grave transcription. On the photo of the grave, I
cannot actually read the final number of the year of death.

I would normally trust the informant's report to the doctor recorded on the
death certificate. However, in this case, the date of birth would be when her
mother was only 14. This is possible, but not likely. The doctor might have
got the date wrong, transcribed it incorrectly, or maybe the informant, Mary's
brother Claude, got the date wrong. The date on the grave matches more
closely with the census age reports, which yield a year of birth of 1882-1884.
The 1900 census reports her birth date as Jun 1883, one year later, which, for
some reason, is often the case with that census.

Another definitive reference is when her parents were married. The 1900
census above tells us that Wylie and Hannah (Mollie) married about 1881
(married 19 years). This is consistent with the report of birth of their
daughter Mary Frances in June 1882, the date on Mary Frances' gravestone.
Mary Frances and Enoch Jackson are living in the Gracy household.

The other J W Gracy Memorial #141137366 born 1886-1902 is possible Joseph
Wesley Gracy in my tree but I have no information to support either.

Information and research on Mollie Walker Hanna can be found on Death Cert
Texas #5973 showing she died in Vernon, Wilbarger County, TX. USA 24 Jan 1940
with burial in Marietta Cemetery 26 Jan 1940. However a search of Lakeview
found nothing along with a search of OK. It is assumed no findagrave

Lakeview Cemetery, Love County, OK. USA.

Notes for Ora May GRAHAM

---------------------
Ora May Graham Merryman
Birth Mar. 23, 1886 Rudy, Crawford County, Arkansas
Death Apr. 8, 1943 Steilacoom, Pierce County, Washington

Ora May (Graham) Merryman, was born March 23, 1886 in Rudy, Crawford Co.,
Arkansas; and passed away in Fort Steilacoom, Pierce Co., Washington on April
8, 1943. Ora first married Abraham H. Merryman (Aug 10, 1902 in Sugar Loaf
Co., Choctaw Nation/Okla.) then She evidently remarried another man, after
divorcing Abe H. Merryman (Nov 17, 1932, Reno, NV.) as her spouse is listed as
one Charles Lawrence (according to Washington State Death Certificate Index
1907-1960). Also, according to this record her parents names were John &
Ormanda Grahm. (Although, family records and others, spell her parents names
as John Wesley Graham & Arminda Jane Bell). She and Abe -about 3 years older
than her- had nine Children together between the years of 1903 and 1924; all
of these were born were boys, but for three girls. Of these children, all of
them have passed away, except for one of the girls as of 2012.

This person's name is on a plaque placed in the Cemetery (which is one of the
pictures to the right) that has over 500 names listed on it. I have taken
pictures of this plaque in sections so as to make the names visible. I then
cropped sections with up to 5 names at time on them.

The other names with this section are:

J.D. McNeley
Stewart K. McPherson
Edward McReynolds
Katherine Meinken

These people were buried at the Western State Hospital Memorial Cemetery
between 1939 and 1952.

(Note: The following was a letter posted in the cemetery on their kiosk)

To find out information about a deceased relative who had been a patient at
Western State Hospital and you have an interest in obtaining old medical
records:

There are laws that must be followed in order concerning the release of the
medical records.

You will need to obtain and complete a consent form and have it signed by the
oldest living relative.

That person also has to have documentation proving they are related to the
patient such as birth/death certificates, obituaries, etc.

A death certificate may be needed to prove they are deceased, but if the
relative died at Western State Hospital, that will not be needed that unless
it helps prove relationship.

Send the completed information to Lisa Evans at the address below and we will
do a search.

The records are on microfilm and will then be mailed to the requestor. This
may take up to 3 or 4 weeks depending on how long it takes to find the
records.

Contact Lisa if you have any questions. Thanks.

Western State Hospital Historical Cemetery 1876 - 1953

Over 3,200 psychiatric patients from Western State Hospital were buried here
from 1876 to 1953. Since then, burial has been elsewhere. The graves are
marked with numbers for privacy reasons and the stigma of mental illness.
These people worked on the award winning hospital farm and in other hospital
areas and called the hospital "home." They were mothers, fathers,
grandparents, aunts and uncles, children and many were veterans.

May they rest in peace, with dignity and respect.
