I note that Matt Cornwell states in his Cornwell and Denton Family Tree, which includes many Greens, that Thomas was killed in battle in the Civil War and his body was not brought back home. The compilation of Rutherford County Marriages, however, reports that both Thomas and his wife Susan (Susanna) Bridges were buried in Boiling Springs Cemetery (Cleveland County, North Carolina). They are listed in the 1860 census with their children in Cleveland County, North Carolina. Also in the household are Thomas' brother John Elias and his wife Sarah Boswell McSwain. Also in the list is a William J Green, their nephew, the nephew of their brother Tyree. William died in January 1865, while his brother Thomas was released at the end of the war. The identity of the other Greens in this regiment list are not known. I suspect that the Benton A Green was actually Thomas Bention. Note that all these Green surnamed individuals joined the army on the same day. I suspect that there was a confusion over the name Thomas Bention, and the middle name got entered as another erosn. There are some strong indications that our Thomas Green, son of Jacob and Susan Green was among some Greens who moved to Fresno County, California. The California Death Index records a Tom G Green, born in Oklahoma, whose mother's maiden name was Barnett, died in Fresno County on 23 April 1968. This matches a California report for Thomas' brother Pink, also reported to have died in Fresno County, California. The G middle initial also matches a record with many facts tying Tom Green to our Green family line. The World War I draft registration records record a Tom Gilbert Green, registered on 5 June 1917, born in Fort Gibson, Muskogee County, Oklahoma on 4 April 1891. The California Death Index gives this same date of birth for Tom G Green. The family of Jacob and Susan Green, including Tom, were registered in the 1910 census in Nash Township, Muskogee County. He was listed there as Thomas Green. The 1930 census lists him as Thomas G Green. The WWI registration birth date differs slightly from the 1900 census, as we often find. The census gives the birth month as August 1891, rather than April. Otherwise this Tom Gilbert Green matches Thomas. I found this genealogy also attached an 1880 census for a different Jackson, J I Jackson in Tennessee, married to a C A Jackson. The I initial may reflect the name Isaac. This is not Jackson and Clarinda who continued to live in Indian Territory. The Tennessee couple had children reported as R J and W I. There are no known children that match those initials in the family of Jackson and Clarinda. It amazes me how people can attach any record from anywhere and think they are doing genealogy, without even checking to see if it matches or makes sense. Jackson was born after the 1850 census. In that census, the last child listed is Jacob, who was born in November 1848, according to the 1900 census. The census date in 1850 was 1 June 1850. Ages reported should have been as of that date. But experience shows that in many cases, maybe most of the time, ages were reported as of the day whenever the enumerator arrived at that particular home. In 1850, page dates were often September to November. At any rate we are safe with Jack's case in saying he was born after 1 June 1850. With the 1860 census date being 1 July, he could indeed be 10 as of census date. 1850 Federal Census, Gilmer County, Georgia, [no date] page 397B (scan #100), Hse/Fam #691 Toliver Green 33 M Farmer born SC Winney Green 28 F born GA Telitha Green 7 F born GA Daniel Green 6 M born GA Mary Green 4 F born GA Jacob Green 1 M born GA In the 1860 census, Jackson is reported as age 10. Official census date for 1860 was again 1 June. But as noted, ages are often rounded off. I have not found a census record for Jackson in 1900. 1860 Federal Census, Cooke County, Texas, 21 July, Gainesville, page 58, Hse #481, Fam #496 Taiferro [Toliver] Green 48 M Farmer [No real estate value] $250 Personal Estate born SC Winna [Winney] Green 38 F Georgia Jackson Green 10 M born Georgia Jack is found as Jackson or Jack in records. Jackson was a very popular name. Some records indicate he was also named Thomas. The name Tom Green also appears with Dan Green and Abraham Jackson, husband of their sister Talitha Green, and is otherwise unidentified in family information. One document from that era clarifies who this Tom Green was. A court record found in the Ft Smith/Van Buren records of the Western District of Arkansas identified charges against Dan Green and Jackson Green, aka Tom Green, The warrant noted that charges were originally filed against them as Dan Green and Tom Green. This would inform us that Dan and Talitha's brother Jackson was named either Thomas Jackson Green or Jackson Thomas Green. Both these names are found in the family lineage. There is a pattern in this line of using the middle name as the common name, so it seems likely Jackson was his middle name. We are listing him in this genealogy as Thomas Jackson Green. Other records support this identity. "I have found permits for "T. Green" and his license is issued under Francis (Colbert) Cochran, now we also know how Daniel Green and Francis Colbert met. There's also a permit for a William Jackson. He ended up married to a Chickasaw woman named Annie Donovan." -- Kati Jackson Cain, email to cousins Orville Boyd Jenkins and Marion Mixon, 24 October 2015 This permit was issued one year before their employer, Frances Colbert Cochran married Jack's brother Daniel David Green in Pickens County, Chickasaw Nation. The first record found for Thomas James Green is the 1850 census, when he was reported as the 11-year-old son of Rev Anderson Green and his wife Sarah in Carroll County, Georgia. His full name comes from his wife Sarah Jane Duffy's military widow's pension application in 1909, filed in Upshur County, Texas. 1850 Federal Census, Carroll County, Georgia, 21 October, Division 11, Hse/Fam #952 Anderson Green 44 M Farmer $2000 Real Estate Value b NC [b abt 1806] - next page - Sarah Green 41 F b NC Cannot read and write [b abt 1809] Wm Green 21 M Laborer b NC [b abt 1849] Margaret Green 20 F b NC [b abt 1830] Alfred Green 17 M NC $0 Real Estate Value b Tenn [b abt 1833] Mary Green 14 F b GA [b abt 1836] Thomas Green 11 M b GA [b abt 1839] Geo Green 5 M b GA [b abt 1845] Jackson Green 2 M b GA [b abt 1849] Richard Barns 19 M b GA [b abt 1831] The son Thomas is reported here as born about 1839, and other sources have about 1840. But several genealogies report that Thomas J Green, born about 1820, was a son of Anderson Green born about 1818-1823. It would seem obvious these are two different Thomas Greens. It was the younger one who was the son of Anderson and Sarah Green that was reported in the 1850 census in Carroll County, Georgia, as the 11-year-old son of Anderson and Sarah's children. Thomas J Green who was born in 1820 was Thomas Jefferson Green, born in Tennessee. He and his wife Nancy J Easley were reported in Sabine County, Texas in the 1850 census, and later in Van Zandt, farther west in 1860 and 1870. There is a confusion about wives also. There are two wives reported for Thomas Jefferson Green, Nancy J Easley and SJ (Duffy?) Green. S J Duffy was born about 1845, and her Civil War widow's pension application reports her husband as Thomas James Green, Upshur County, where she had lived for 53 years. Several genealogies report one wife or the other or both for Thomas Jefferson Green. But it would appear that S J Duffy was the wife of Thomas James Green, born about 1839-1840. A genealogy has the name of Thomas J Green, husband of Nancy J Easley, as Thomas Jefferson Green, whereas in her 1909 pension application, Sarah J (Duffy) Green reported her husband's name as Thomas James Green. Note that the 1850, 1860 and 1880 census also report Thomas born in Georgia, while the censuses for Thomas J Green born about 1820 is reported born in Tennessee and the husband of Nancy J Easley. In 1860, all the children were reported under one initial, so Thoams is T Green, age 20. This again matches a birth about 1840. 1860 Federal Census, Parker County, Texas, 23 August, PO Coffee Hill, page 43, Hse #664, Fam #670 A Green 52 M Farmer $1250 Real Estate value or $500 Personal Wealth Rptd born NC [b abt 1808] S Green 51 F Domestic born NC [b abt 1809] A Green 27 M Farmer born GA [b abt 1833] T Green 20 F Farmer born GA [b abt 1840] G Green 14 F born GA [b abt 1846] A Green 12 F born GA [b abt 1848] H Green 9 F born GA [b abt 1851] In the 1880 census, Thomas' wife Sarah Jane Duffy is reported as Jane. Thomas' father Anderson, a Minister of the Gospel, is living in his household. He is reported as married, but no wife is reported in the household. Since Thomas' father Anderson is in the household, we know this is the right Thomas, but note that the record here reports that Thomas is only 40 years old, which would mean he was born in about 1840. This family was actually enumerated twice at the same address as a whole family by two different enumerators. This is the only instance I have found of this kind of double enumeration. Usually it is one person in two different households where they were with different family on two different dates. I found Jeff and Odelia at the same street address with the same information except for a couple of minor differences. The enumerations are included in two different enumeration districts. This must mean that their house was just at the division between the two districts, enumerated by two different enumerators. They apparently lived on or near a corner. There are other street names next to them in both lists. In the enumeration above you see their address is recorded as 4513 Collinwood St. There are two other houses on Collinwood Street listed on the same page, but at the top, while they are listed next to last on the page. The addresses of these two houses are 4921 and 4936 Collinwood. The house next to the Greens is listed as 4905 El Campo St. The numbers of the El Campo addresses on this page run in the same sequence as the Collinwood addresses, except for the Green household, as though it was the same street or the enumerator put the wrong street name in each section. In the second enumeration below, you will see that their address is listed as 4513 El Campo. The 4500 series of houses around them are also shown as on El Campo. The neighboring streets here are Pershing and Western. This enumeration is for District 68, and the date is incomplete, giving only the day, 28. The Ward is 16E. Note also that the birth state changes for Jeff's parents, reported them both born in Texas as he was. Note the difference in real estate value reported on apparently the same house! Some genealogies report Thomas' full name was Thomas Jefferson Green. It is not clear who his father was. The following record in 1850 for Thomas J and Nancy J Green reports his age as 32, or born about 1818. There are several unrelated lines of Greens in north Texas, some of whom lived at times in the same counties and same towns. Several genealogies have confused records for Thomas Jefferson Green and a younger Thomas James Green, who was born in about 1840 in Georgia, while Thomas Jefferson Green was born about 1820 in Tennessee. T J and Nancy's son Bethel Mayberry Green married Frances Jane Barnett. The Barnetts are also related to another line of Greens form South Carolina descended from Meshack W Green and Lucretia Franklin, the central Green line in this genealogy. Frances Jane was the daughter of Francis Marion Barnett and Nancy Jane Gibson. This Meshack W Green line is also related to a different Barnett line in North Texas and Indian Territory. In 1850 Thomas and Nancy were in Sabine County, Texas, on the border with Louisiana, in northeastern Texas. 1850 Federal Census, Sabine County, Texas, 7 May, Sabine District, page 677 (Scan 325), Hse/Fam #228 Thomas J Green 32 M Farmer $200 Real Estate b Tennessee [b abt 1818] Nancy J Green 20 F b Mississippi John M Green 1 M b Texas The one child John at age 1 here matches the genealogy report that Thomas and Nancy married in 1948. Living next door appears to be Nancy's brother James Easley and his wife. The spelling of his name in the common way seems to indicate a typo in the genealogy where I found Nancy's maiden name as Easely. (I have found that unfortunately, many people constructing genealogies give no attention to spelling of names, which greatly complicates matters!) I am following the spelling of the census, which is the normal way this family name is spelled. Sabine County is on the border with Louisiana in east Texas. This would match their movement from the east. Thomas was born in Tennessee, Nancy in Mississippi. They apparently married in Sabine County, but no marriage record has been found. "Sabine County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, its population was 10,834. Its county seat is Hemphill. Ages for Thomas in these two census match, in contrast to later censuses. Nancy's age varies by 2 years, which can happen with changes in census dates, depending on when the birthday was. 1860 and 1870 vary only one year for Nancy, making her birthday either 1822 or 1823. If we follow the age in 1850, her birth would be in 1830 or 1829, which some genealogies use. Interpretation of the Is and Js of this enumerator vary with the reader. Genealogies seem generally to have middle initial J. I have listed these individuals as Thomas J Green and Nancy J R Easely. Only this census has the additional R initial for Nancy. Father and son T (Thomas) seem to have the same name and initial, comparing the different censuses. In 1870, this child is definitely Thomas J, so it matches the father's name in 1860 transcribed as T J in most sources, and as Thomas J in 1850. Thomas' reported age in 1870 would make his birth in about 1823. This birth year estimates from the three censuses range from 1818 to 1823. His grave reports his birth year as 1839. With this birth year, he would have been only about 11 years old in 1850 when he was reported as married with a 1-year-old son, and age 32. 1870 Federal Census, Van Zandt County, Texas, 23 August, Justice Precinct 3, PO Canton, page 69, Hse #492, Fam #545 Tho [sic] Green 47 M W Farmer $1000 Real Estate $1000 Personal b Tennessee [b abt 1833] Nancy Green 37 F W Keeping House b Mississippi Cannot read or write Joseph Green 17 M W b Texas Cannot write Daniel Green 15 M W b Texas Cannot write Mary F Green 13 F W b Texas Bethel Green 11 M W b Texas Cannot read or write Thos J Green 9 M W b Texas Note how vastly the ages vary on most of the people in this household from census to census. Census ages on 1850 and 1860 match, so this seems the safest reference to use for the birth of Thomas and Nancy. Some genealogies have Nancy's death information as 2 Nov 1879 Sabine, Texas, but no source documentation is provided. Some genealogies report that the second wife of Thomas James Green was S J McQuary, or McQuarry. They cite a marriage record in 1880 in Hamilton County, Texas, several counties to the southwest. Several genealogies have mixed informatino for Thomas Jefferson Green and his wife S J McQuarry with another couple in a perhaps different Green line in Upshur and neighboring counties in northeast Texas. Thomas James Green was the son of Anderson and Sarah Green from North Carolina, and appears to have been born in Georgia, based on the 1850 census. They moved to north Texas late in Anderson's life. The S J Green who was the wife of Thomas James Green was Sarah Jane Duffy/Duffey, who stated in 1909 that she had lived in Upshur County for 53 years. Widow S J Green of Upshur County, Texas, applied in 1909 for a military widow's pension, reporting her husband as Thomas James Green. She reports they married on 6 February 1871 in Upshur County. She reports she has lived in Upshur County for 53 years, or since about 1856. Family sources and some records tell us S J Green was Sarah Jane Duffy. Her son Berlie's death certificate has this full maiden name. Her husband had served with the Cavalry from Texas in the Confederacy during the Civil War. While Thomas Jefferson Green and his wife Nancy were reported in Sabine County, Texas, in the 1850 census, in that census Thomas James Green was reported as an 11-year-old son in the household of his parents Anderson and Sarah Green in Carroll County, Georgia.
TJ's son Oscar reported Thomas J Green as his father, but did not report the name of his mother, on his Social Security records. In the Fnd-a-Grave record below, Oscar is reported as a child of the second wife. No names or dates are given for the three wives reported. Thomas Green is enumerated along with neighboring households of his father, his brother Isaac in the 1830 census for Hall County, Georgia. He is there again in 1840 along with Isaac and Daniel and his sister Elizabeth (under the name of her husband J H Moss). Unfortunately, the US census before 1850 gave the name only of the head of household. But Thomas appears next door to his father Daniel Green, and on the other side of Daniel is Thomas' brother Isaac. This indicated their family relationship, and the ages of the members of the households matched birth dates from other sources for these three. 1830 Federal Census, Hall County, Georgia, page 125 Thomas Green Males 1 age 20-30, 2 5-10 Females 1 20-30 1840 Federal Census, Hall County, Georgia, District #507, page 65 Thomas Green Males 1 age 30-40, 2 5-10, 2 under 5 Females 1 30-40, 3 5-10, 1 under 5 "I have my great grandmother's supplemental application. There was the name Mashack in the old Green Bible, said William Bryant, brother of Hardy Bryant. They were rejected on their Cherokee blood, but I know they were Cherokee. The genealogy research of Richard Bates was very helpful to fill out details for this lineage and Thomas Perry's family in particular. Bates, in research on the Bates and Jackson families, gives the place of death of Thomas as Saline County, Arkansas, but the burial in Grant County. Bates gives the name of the Cemetery, Carter Cemetery in Grant County. This detail adds credibility. In addition, he is researching from within the family, since Thomas Perry Green was married to Mary Eliza Jackson. Because of the more detailed information I am following Bates. Bates' information led me to think that the family were resident in Grant County, though death occurred across the county line in Saline. Grant County is just south of Saline County. From this I suspected that Thomas was sick and died in a hospital or clinic in Benton, the county seat of Saline County, which is just a few miles north of the Saline County border. It was less common in those days for a person to die away from home in a hospital, so perhaps he was in Benton on some business, and died there of an accident or some natural cause, like a heart attack. A source I found later states the place of residence as Saline County. So perhaps they lived on the Saline County side, but chose the burial spot in Grant County for reason of proximity, or for some family reason unknown to us. I note that sources indicate his wife Mary Eliza Jackson also died in Grant County, Arkansas. Sources cited by Glenda Pool in her unpublished Green family research gives the place of death for both as Sheridan, Grant, Arkansas. Both were buried in the Carter Cemetery in Grant County. This one reports Thomas and Mary were born in North Carolina instead of South Carolina, as reported in the 1850 census. It also reports Nancy, the oldest child reproted in 1860, as born in North Carolina. But she was born in Hall County, Georgia, where Thomas and Mary got married and raised their family. Some pen strokes in the 1860 census are faded throughout the page, making some names difficult to discern, and some letters made oddly. Ancestry has the child after James transcribed as Union, but it matches the child names in family sources as Minor, and strokes are similar to the correct letters matching this in other entries. 1860 Federal Census, Saline County, Arkansas, 14 June, Saline Township, page 28, Hse/Fam #177 Thomas Green 46 Farmer $0 Real Estate $300 Personal born North Carolina [b abt 1814] Mary Green 44 F Farmer born North Carolina Cannot read or write [b abt 1839] Nancy Green 24 F Farmer born North Carolina Cannot read or write [b abt 1836] Martha Green 23 F Farmer born Georgia Cannot read or write [b abt 1837] James Green 22 M Farmer born Georgia Cannot read or write [b abt 1838] Union [Minor] Green 19 M Farmer born Georgia [b abt 1841] Gifford Green 17 M Farmer born Georgia [b abt 1843] Irvin Green 14 M Farmer born Georgia [b abt 1846] Perry N Green 12 M Farmer born Georgia [b abt 1848] --------------- Thomas Perry Green Birth 1806 Death 1866 Thomas Perry Green was born 1806 in North Carolina, USA [Some records and family information indicate he was born in S Carolina; they lived in Pendleton District], and died 1866 in Saline County, Arkansas, USA.
