Notes for Lucinda GREGORY

---------------------------
I am researching my Gregory line..wow, is it confusing! My brick wall is
LUCINDA GREGORY b abt 1810 (in Va or Tenn) d Dec 26 1850 in Holly Springs,
Miss. She married Wyle H Adams in 1829 in Jefferson County Tenn. I believe
she is the daughter of GEORGE GREGORY b abt 1779 d 1847 in Jefferson County
Tenn. ...

[Citing a cousin:] Priscilla Gregory (1817-1868) I have as a sister to my
direct Lucinda Gregory (1810-1850). This comes from information in probate
courts Re: their brother George, Jr. (1804-1840)'s estate filed in 1841 in
Jefferson Co, TN. Priscilla (and husband James Webb, Jr.) are named heirs and
shown as siblings. Lucinda (and husband "Wiley" Adams) are likewise named as
heirs and siblings. This [what?] was testimony of their father George Gregory
(Sr.).

Lucretia died some time around 1855. In the 1860 census, his wife's name is
Rosa M Webb (Rosa Mariah Collins according to another researcher). Lucretia's
two sons reported in 1850 are in the household with matching ages. From the
gap in children's ages, the next child, Joseph, age 6, apperars to be Rosa's
first child with James,. From his reported age of 6 here, he was born about
1854. So we may place Lucretia's death and James' marriage to Rosa in 1855.
It could have been 1854

The birth date reported here for Lou matches neither Lucretia nor Lucinda's

about 1855 and Lucinda about September 1859. Her son's birth record above
indicates that it was Lucretia who married Andrew Alfrey, the informant on her
death certificate.

Luccretia's father John Jameson Gregory died before the 1871 census. Her

Lucy is still at home with her parents in 1910, at the age of 16.

By 1920, Lucy has been married and divorced and has moved to the Northwest.
Note that according to ages in the previous censuses and this 1920 census,
Lucy has aged only 7 years since 1910. The 1900 and 1910 ages are consistent
with her known birth date from family sources, 16 Aug 1893.

In the 1920 census, Lucy is divorced from George Tugman, and is living with
her two sons in Rock Lake Precinct, Platte County, Wyoming. She and George
married some time about 1814, then moved to Platte County, Wyoming, before the
birth of J D, who was 8 months old in January 1920. But in the census, they
are reported as Divorced. George and Lucy are living in different locations
in the same county. The children are with Lucy. It would seem likely they
moved then divorced quickly after, perhaps over the stress of the move and
relocation?

Details on the divorce are missing from family tradition, and I have found no
public documentation. Family tradition reports that George got the divorce
from Lucy on the grounds of mental cruelty he had experienced. (Information
from Loretta Gregory Gay, niece of Lucy and George.) Beyond this no details
are known.

Lucy Tugmon Housekeeper F W 23 Divorced TN TN TN

J D Tugmon M W 8mos WY OK TN

In this census the family name is written Tugmon, as is George's record. It
is spelled Tugman on census entries for the previous Tugman generations and
for George and Lucy's boys in later life. A Tugmon genealogy also spells the
name consistently as Tugmon (referenced in some of the footnotes and Notes on
some Tugman individuals.)

In this census the birthplace of both Lucy's parents is reported as Tennessee,
which is correct from other records and family sources. However, in 1930,
when she is back in Oklahoma, and married to Lawrence Carter, her father is
reported as born in Georgia. I cannot think of any explanation for that.

Lucy married Lawrence Carter in Pasuls Valley, Oklahoma, on 1 March 1923.

Her first child with Lawrence, Billie Joe, is 6 years old in the 1930 census,
so I estimate they were married in about 1922 for Billie to be born before
April 1923 (to be 6 years old in the April census 1930). Billy Joe's actual
birth date is 24 January 1924.

Richard H Gregory is the son of Herbert Gregory and Lucy Osborne Thweatt. We
know from Archibald's son George that Archibald's mother was Mary Elizabeth
Hatchett. In fact, her maiden name was Archibald's middle name. Lucy is
likely Richard's sister, named after their mother, Lucy Osborne Thweatt. This
is strenghthened by the fact that in 1860, the only two persons in the
household are R H Gregory and Archibald Gregory.

On the same page a few houses away from Richard was F R Gregory, who appears
to be Richard and Lucy's brother. F R appears to be Richard's brother. Lucy
Gregory, who is enumerated in Richard's household, appears to be their sister.
From the name of the second son reported here, we suspect that F R's name is
Francis R.

Notes for Mack GREGORY

At the time of Mack's birth and death soon after, the family was living in
Earl, Oklahoma Territory. One historical source indicates this was in J
County, which later became Johnston County. In the Oklahoma Territory many if
not all the counties were named simply with letters of the alphabet. Oklahoma
Territory and Indian Territory were later merged into the new State of
Oklahoma in 1907.
-- "Oklahoma Counties and Nations," OK Gen Web, okgenweb.net

However, modern Johnston County was created at the establishment of the State
of Oklahoma, in what was then Chickasaw Naiton, which did not become a part of
Oklahoma until the Indian Territory was merged with Oklahoma Territory in
September 1907. So it appears Earl was actually in Chickasaw Nation at that
time. This puzzling note about J County and Johnston County has been removed
now in the revised and relocated OKGenWeb site.

"Johnston County was created, at statehood, in 1907 and wass named for Douglas
H. Johnston, governor of the Chickasaw Nation. It is located in southern
Oklahoma and covers 645 square miles. The county seat is Tishomingo. The
Chickasaw capitol building built in 1896 became the county courthouse."

Notes for Mahulda GREGORY

A marriage record is found for Mahulda in Fleming County, but the handwritten
name is spelled Mahuda. Her sister Priscilla Jane Gregory named one of her
daughters Mahulda, probably also indicating that that her sister's name was
Mahulda.

Also note that this marriage record reports that she is a widow. The better
documented genealogies report her first husband as John Pearce or Pierce. But
at least one reports that John Monroe Pierce died 15 Nov 1902 Fleming Co,
Kentucky, which does not fit for a first husband. This would make John Pearce
her next husband after John Plummer, whom she married in 1855. That means she
was married three tiems, and we do nothave the name of the first husband.

Notes for Malinda GREGORY

Our thanks to Steve Squier for his analysis of the 1840 census listing for the
household of Richard Gregory. another child is listed by Carolyn Cooper, but
with no substantiating recor, named Miranda. A matching Malinda Gregory also
appears in a marriage record with Thomas Denson, aboth of whose names are
mentoined in a probate record for one William Gregory, for whom Richard
Gregory was initially the administrator, but then died, and the new
adminstrator appointed was Isaa Rinehart, the husbamnd of Richard's daughter
Susan. Susan and Malinda appear to be sisters.

There is no room, however, for Miranda or Malinda to fit with the names we
know for children of Richard and Dorcas Gregory correlated with other records.
Steve Squier has done fairly extensive research into the Gregorys that seem to
comprise the family of Richard, which we have also reesarched and found
addiotinal records and circumstantial evidence confirming the configuration of
Richard's famliy.

Steven's analysis of the 1840 census record for Richard Gregory's household,
it seems that Malinda Gregory is also his daughter. The name Miranda may yet
be another child or Richard and Dorcas Fishback who died before 1840. No
record has been found in that name.

1840 Jefferson Co., TN
male 50-59 = Richard Gregory
female 50-59 = Dorcas Fishback
[the unidentified son and Few are now out of the household, Few having been
married in 1834]

female 20-29 = Lucretia Gregory (b. ~1819 TN)
female 20-29 = Mary Jane Gregory (b. ~1820 TN)
female 15-19 = Susan Gregory (b. ~1821 TN)
male 15-19 = James Henry Gregory (b. Apr 1826 TN)
female 5-9 = Cynthia Gregory (b. ~1831/32 TN)
