Notes for George HARRIS

George married Teresa (Thérèse) Ann Dumond about 1873. No marriage record
has been found. Their first child, Mary Elizabeth Harris, was reported as age
6 in the June 1880 census, so born in about 1874. No 1870 census record has
been found for them either.

The name of the oldest child in the 1880 census at first looks like MargE.
But then there is a writeover, which looks more like MaryE. The name Mary E
would match the name of a child a correspondent reprots as his ancestor, Mary
Elizabeth Harris, daughter of Teresa and George.

Notes for Herman O'Neil HARRIS

Family sources spell his middle name O'Neil, but I found that on his birth
record the name is spelled O Neill (with the space, no apostrophe and two Ls).

-- Timothy Merle Flynn, Ancestry Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 15 June
2018

An entry in the 1880 census for George and Teresa seems to match Mary. But it
not clear what was intended. It at first looks like MargE (written together
with no space between the name and the initial). But then there is a
writeover, which looks more like MaryE. The name Mary E matches the name
reported by Timothy Flynn.

The age on the following index marriage record matches the age reported for
Mary E Harris in 1880. Her husband's name here, however, is only the initials
N F, not Henry. But I suspect the original had H F, which was misread by the
transcriber. From the 1600s till roughly 1900, it was common to write H with
an upstroke from the bottom of the first stem to the top of the lst stem. It
looked different from an N, however, with the inner stroke going up to the
left, oppostie the N. We have no access to the original handwritten record.

In their marriage record, both Mollie and Henry reported their residence as
DeLuce Township of Arkansas County. In the 1900 census they were enumerated
in the Point DeLuce Township. Note that the date of the marriage is September
1891, and their son Athur is reported n 1900 as born in June 1891. I expect
that, as usual, the 1900 census is one year off on the year of birth, and
Arthur's actual birth date was in 1892. This indeed does turn out to be the
case from later records, which also has a different month, reporting the full
date as 11 September (not June) 1892.

Rosalie's name varies in spelling, appearing as Rosley 1900, Rosly in 1910,
Rossly in 1920.. The original name may have been Rosalee or Rosalie. On her

Rosie?). Her son Weldon reported her name as Rossy on his WWI registration.

Rossy's date of death according to her death certificate and gravestone is 30
December 1929. The date on her stone is 3 December, the date of death on her
husband Drayton's death certificate. Drayton is buried with her in Little
Memorial Cemetery in Blacksburg, Cherokee County, South Carolina.

But the death date for Drayton is reported as 30 December, 1929, which is his
wife's date of death! Drayton's death certificate reports he died on 3
December 1929, but his grave has Rosie's date of death!

The grave markers for Drayton and his wife are footstones in the same style.
It appears they were both cut at the same time, which makes sense since they
died in the same month. But the dates of death for the two on their death
certificates got switched on their gravestones by the engravers!

-----------------
"My grandmother Lillie Florence Jenkins is not mentioned ever living with
Drayton and Rosalie that I can find. She is in early census records living
with her sister Mala and her husband. You are correct on the death dates
being switched on Drayton and Rosalie. Drayton had a heart attack and was
found dead in some woods near his home.

They are buried at Little Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery in Gaffney, SC.
And are directly next to my grandparents. Joseph Graham Northey and Lillie
Florence Jenkins Northey. ... Drayton and Rosalie lived in Blacksburg at the
time of their deaths. ...

I never met either of my great-grandparents or my grandmother Lillie. She
died when my mom was 8. If you ever find anything about Rosalie, please let
me know. She is just a total mystery. (She was a Harris before she married
Drayton Jenkins.)

Notes for Sophia HARRIS

The really interesting Texas Jones descendants of Russell Sr. came down through
Russell Jr., who married Sophia Harris and died suddenly of illness in San
Felipe, Texas, in 1841. His son Augustus Harris [Jones], who arrived in
Mexican Texas in 1835, escaped death at Goliad and the Alamo because he was
off in the States raising money on Fannin's behalf for the Texian cause. Gus
Jr., a cowman turn-of-the-century mayor of San Antonio, joined two other
cattlemen to build the Saint Anthony, still a luxury hotel there. William
Early Jones, a jurist who was hauled off to Mexico City in 1842 by General
Woll while holding a commissioners court in San Antonio, became first editor
of the San Antonio Express after distinguishing himself as an editor in
Augusta, Georgia.

-- Comments on photos of handwritten land transfer documents posted on Find a
Grave for Walton Harris by "Hazlehurst-Harris," 31 December 2015

While the DAR membership genealogy above reports Walton was born in Chowan
County, North Carolina, his FAG memorial reports birth in Brunswick County,
Virginia. The DAR information also reports he died in Wilkes County, Georgia,
but the FAG memorial reports he died in Greene County GA. Land transfer
documents cited above indicate he did move to Wilkes County, Georgia. But
Wilkes County became Greene County in 1786, so it was already Greene Co when
he died. The latest date on the land documents was 1874, two years before the
name change.
