We get Mr Hicks' surname from the 1900 census where his wife Emma is reported as widow, and has tow young children, tone of which was just born in July 1899. The family genealogies that have her name, though, have it as Hildebrandt. But they do not comment on the 12-year-old sister named Hesser. One or two genealogies clarify that Christine is a half sisster. Some genealogies report Mr Hicks' name as Frederick William. This is supported by the fact that George named one of his sons Frederick William Hicks. His son in the 1930 census is George M, but the only child mentioned in the memorial is Frederick William. These may be two different wives. I have not found marriage records George or either wife's name. George's situation in 1920 is unclear. He is registered with the same household number as Fred Gold and his family, but given a separate Family number as head of the second family. But his street address is also different. Fred's family address appears to be 120 Olive St, while George's address is 121 Omaha. This may be one house with two entrances on the corner of Olive and Omaha, so that each entrance is on a separate street. The 1900 census reports a complicated household headed by widow Emma Hicks, with older children named Ealand and younger children named Hicks. The Ealand children are reported as Emma's stepchildren, so it appears that Emma's first husband was a widower named Ealand who had these two daughters when Emma married him as his second wife. Based on the children's ages and surnames, Emma must have married the Hicks children's father between December 1890 (when Harriett was born) and about January 1896 (about 10-11 months before George Hicks was born). 1900 Federal Census, Bexar County, Texas, 15 June, San Antonio, District 104, page 19B, 230 Magnolia St, Hse #386, Fam #449 Hicks, Emma Head W F Dec 1869 30 Widow 2 children/2 living TX Germany Germany No Occup Owns Hicks, Georgie Son W M Nov 1896 3 TX England TX Hicks, Florence Dau W F July 1899 10mos Single TX England TX Hesser, Christine Sister W F July 1887 12 Single TX Germany Germany At School Ealand, Pearl W F Oct 1889 10 TX TX TX At School Ealand, Harriett E Son [sic] W M {sic} Dec 1890 9 TX TX TX At School Christine Hesser was enumerated two times in the 1900 census. In another listing, she is included with her parents' household in nearby Guadalupe County, Texas. Most genealogies lack Emma's parents, but most report her name as Hildebrandt. One detailed genealogy clarifies that Christine is a half-sister, the last child of Emma's mother, who married a second husband named Hesser after only a few years of marriage to John Hildebrandt who died. Another genealogy was confusing since it also had Hesser as Therese's maiden name of Emma and Christine's mother, Therese or Theresia Schneider.See the followintg Ancestry genealogy: -- Jentsch Family Tree, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/19343947/person/18525050682 One genealogy shows two husbands, but reports the first husband of Therese Hesser (Hesse) as one Heinrich Saenger, not a Hildebrandt. This reports Emma and several other Hildebrandt children as children of Therese Hesser and this Heinrich Sanger, without any mention of the different surname. The second husband of Therese in this genealogy is George Hesser, Christine's father. In 1910, the Ealand girls are not in the household. He married his first wife Amy in late 1850. So 49 years would be up to 1899. But Emily died in 1892. So it look like it should have been 41 years. Note also his birth year is off, as we normally find about half the time in the 1900 census. Previous census ages would make his birth year 1826. The month here is different too. The birth date on his gravestone is March 7, 1826. Spelling appears both as Kerwin or Kerwyn. I know the name as Kerwyn, and this is the way I find it in the 1930 census, when Kerwyn is 8 years old, and the family are living in Ft Cobb, Caddo County, Oklahoma. He was called Kerwyn (Kerwin) by family (following the dominant pattern of this family line in calling the children by their second name. As an adult, however, he preferred to be called Charles. I remember knowing his wife Lois when I was a child. I believe they lived in California for some time, then we visited them in Chickasha, Oklahoma, his hometown. I have no further information about his wife or children, except that some family members know of a son called Mark. Mabel was in Mt View, where she met Oscar Hill, after Joseph Asa moved his family to Mountain View in approximately 1914. In information recorded by Ruth Christian, Mabel (Kerwyn's mother) states that the family had lived in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, for about one year. This sequence of statements compresses events. Harold Christian (Jenkins Family History, private paper) reports that the family moved to Canada sometime after Lahoma was born in Mt View on 25 November 1914. They returned from British Columbia after World War One ended in 1918. When they moved back to Mt View, Harold says they returned to an Indian lease farm southeast of Mt View. Mary had already returned from Canada and was staying with her sister Sallie Christian and her family. At some time later Mabel comments: "When Kerwin was about 3-4 days old, Poppa was made City Marshall." This reference seems to refer to the situation at Fort Cobb. Other factors indicate the Jenkins family moved to Fort Cobb from Mountain View between 1918 and 1925. Mabel's sister Netheline was born in Mountain View 25 December 1918. Virginia Jo Jenkins was born 28 August 1925 in Fort Cobb. Shortly after they moved to Ft Cobb, Joseph Asa became the City Marshall of Ft Cobb. Kerwyn was born in October 1921. If Mabel's memory is right, then Joseph Asa became Marshall of Fort Cobb in October 1921. This would be the period of time when Mabel married Oscar, and when Kerwyn was born. Kerwyn's age is 8 in the 1930 census in Ft Cobb. This date of birth for Kerwyn yielded by this is 1922. In July 2007 my mother Lou Ila Gregory Jenkins late gave me family records she had found, consisting of information Lou had written down from my grandmother Julia Virginia Terry Jenkins. This information gives Kerwyn's birth date as 27 October 1921. Known facts seem to indicate that Mabel and Oscar married in Mt View, and that Kerwyn was born in Mt. View. I thus show the birth place as Mt. View. 1930 Federal Census, Caddo County, Oklahoma, 2 April, Ft Cobb Town, District 26, page 2B, Hse #35, Fam #46 Oscar Hill Head M W 31 TX MO TX Mable Hill Wife F W 26 OK TX GA GA Kerwyn Hill Son S W 8 OK TX OK Vevajune Hill Dau F W 3yrs 11mos OK TX OK 1940 Federal Census, Grady County, Oklahoma, 12 April, Chickasha Ward 1 Block 50, District 78-40, page 11B, 3034 NW 18th St, Hse #270, Rents $28 Hill, Mabel C Head F W 38 Divorced Grade H-4 b Oklahoma same house in 1935 Bacon Slicer, Wholesale Meats Hill, Charles C Son M W 18 Single Grade H-3 b Oklahoma same house in 1935 Hill, Veva J Dau F W 13 Single Grade 9 b Oklahoma same house U.S. Public Records Index, Volume 1 Charles K Hill Birth Date 27 Oct 1921 PO Box 1778, Chickasha, OK, 73023-1778 516 W Chickasha Ave, Chickasha, OK, 73018-2412 8 Skyview Dr, Chickasha, OK, 73018-6102 (1987-1992) I learned Kerwyn's death date first from the online registry of Rose Hill Cemetery in Chickasha, Oklahoma.
