Demaris' name is spelled different ways in different records, indicating that the recorders did were not familiar with the name and did not know how to spell it. I have used the standard classical spelling of the name. Note that tin their marriage record the marriage year is 23 years before her reported date of birth! There is an error in the transcription. The image of this record is not available on Ancestry, but their transcription is wrong. The birth year for Eli is about right, and the birth year for Demaris (Demarious) appears reasonable. Mary is known by the surname initial M. It is possible her maiden name was Mitchell. Her son John named one child Mitchell.
Susan and her white husband John Scott were married in Choctaw nation area in what became Mississippi in stages. Sources reference Anny Scott's parents as a white man and a Choctaw woman. John Scott was Anny's father and her mother was named Susan Ann Maben/Mabin. Genealogies report the parents of Susan Ann Maben as William Mebane (Maben) and Charity Marley. Charity could have been Choctaw, but it does not appear that the Mabane (Maben line was. And the genealogies report that William and charity married in North Carolina, which makes me wonder about the Choctaw designation. I am unaware that Choctaws might have been living in this Cherokee country at that time. We include in this genealogy other ancestors in several lines with Cherokee background from the Carolinas, Georgia and Tennessee or Alabama areas, which were Cherokee areas before the removal of the people to Indian Territory. Maybe there are factors we don't have before us here. The genealogies I have seen are very short on details and documentation. At least two genealogies reference another Susan Scott who lived in Louisiana. These genealogies report that their Susan A Maben, with the married name Susan A Scott, which they may correctly identify as her married name, was born in Rutherford County, Tennessee. Our Susan, Anny Scott's mother, is reported by historical sources as born in Mississippi. Some genealogies also say their Susan A Scott was a widow head of household in Louisiana in 1850. But our Susan died in 1832 on the trek to Indian Territory, according to credible historical and family sources. -------------------- In 1798 the path to statehood was started as the original Mississippi Territory was created by the U.S. Congress. This "first cut" at defining and expanding the boundaries of the fledgling United States, created the territory as a strip of land about 100 miles wide from the Mississippi River to the Chattahoochee River on the Georgia border. The land area of the territory was increased by the West Florida rebellion of 1810 and the end of the War of 1812. Finally the area of Mississippi Territory reached from the Mississippi River in the West to the Chattahoochee in the East and from Tennessee in the North southward to the Gulf of Mexico including all of the lands of both present day Mississippi and Alabama. In 1817 the U.S. Congress divided the Mississippi Territory into the Mississippi and Alabama territories. Later that same year, Mississippi became the twentieth state. Over the next two decades, various treaties with the Choctaw made greater and greater land areas of the territory accessible to Americans until with the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, the first treaty of the era under which Native Americans were literally removed from their homelands, Mississippi was ready for settlement. -- Bill White, Mississippi Genealogy & History Network, http://msghn.org/ -------------------- Susan and John were married in what was or later became Adams County, Mississippi. They were later moved in the removal of the Choctaw people from their traditional lands to the new Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory. Specific dates of their move are unclear. Mississippi Marriages, 1776-1935 Susan Ann Mabin Spouse John Scott Marriage 14 May 1821 Adams County Susan is reported to have died on the trek to Indian Territory in about 1832. ------------------------ Anny Scott Merryman She was born in the Choctaw lands in Mississippi in 1821. She was the daughter of John Scott, a white man, and a Choctaw woman, whose name is not known. Family tradition has it that Anny's Choctaw mother died during the trek to Indian territory, in 1832, when Anny was but 10. Anny Scott Merryman died Dec. 19, 1866, and was buried in Skullyville Cemetery. -- Skullyville, http://www.skullyville.com/239.html -----------------------

State of birth data, as well as their age, tells us that Georgia, John and Ollie are Bertha's children. We can also tell that both George and Mary were in Missouri when their spouses died and when they married. George's two daughters Bertha and Iva were born in Missouri, as were Mary's two daughters and their next child together, Gerogia. Between 1904 and 1907 they moved to Arkansas, where John and later Ollie was born. George and his previous wife had been living in Arkansas for the birth of their daughter Lula in 1891, then moved to Missouri before the birth of Bertha in 1894. With this information I found Mary and her previous husband, James McClain, with their first daughter Cara (Carey in 1910), in Missouri, where they were enumerated in Richland Township of Stoddard County. 1900 Federal Census, Stoddard County, Missouri, 25 June, Richland Township, District 132, page 19B, Hse #362, Fam #365 McClain, James Head W M Feb 1873 27 Married 8 years IL IL IL Sawmill Laborer Rents McClain, Mary Wife W F Nov 1875 24 Married 8 years 2 children/1 living IN IN IN McClain, Cara B Dau W F Oct 1895 5 MO IL IN 1920 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 7 February, Prairie Township, District 16, page 8B, Hse #149, Fam #156 Maddox, George A Head Owns M W 59 IL TN TN Farmer [b abt 1860] Maddox, Mary Wife F W 44 IN IN IN [b abt 1875] Maddox, Georgia Dau F W 16 MO IL IN [b abt 1903] Farm Laborer Maddox, John H Son M W 13 AR IL IN [b abt 1906] Farm Laborer Maddox, Ollie A Dau F W 11 AR IL IN [b abt 1909] Farm Laborer Maddox, Beatrice Dau F W 8 AR IL IN [b abt 1911] Maddox, Charles A Son M W 5 AR IL IN [b abt 1914] Maddox, Roy J Son M W 4 AR IL IN [b abt 1915] Maddox, Harold Son M W 7mos AR IL IN [b abt May 1919] Arkansas Death Index, 1914-1950 George A Maddox Death 2 Jul 1928 Arkansas County Gravestone of George and Mary Maddox Maddox George A March 8, 1860 July 2, 1928 Mary Nov 7, 1876 March 7, 1928 Mt Pleasant Cemetery, Ethel, Arkansas County, Arkansas -------------------------- George A Maddox Birth Mar 8, 1860 Death Jul 2, 1928 George A Maddox was born on March 8, 1860, in Illinois to Lucretia Maddox, age 31, and John B Maddox, age 31. Though Georgia was living in Arkansas since she was a little girl, she married in Missouri where her parents lived when she was born, according to some genealogies. Genealogies identify the following record as belonging to Georgia and her husband Fred Caldwell Johnson. Missouri Marriage Records, 1805-2002 Fred Johnson Marriage 17 Nov 1922 Stoddard County, Missouri Spouse Name Georgia Maddox Father's Name Arthur Johnson This record dates their marriage in 1922, but in the 1930 census above, she reported that she was 18 years old when she got married, and 24 years old at the time of the census. This would mean she was married in 1924 or early 1925. Or otherwise, she was born in 1904, instead of 1906, making her age in 1930 6 instead of 24. The 1910 census age of 6 matches birth in 1904. The age of 16 in January 1920 would place birth in 1903. In the 1940 census, Georgia is a widow, living in Arkansas County, Arkansas again. 1940 Federal Census, Arkansas County, Arkansas, 4 April, Prairie Township, District 1-24, page 3A, Hwy 17, Hse #23, Rents $5 Johnson, Georgia A Head F W 34 Widow Grade 8 b Missouri same place in 1935 Laundry Johnson, Reba Dau F W 16 Grade 12 b MO same place in 1935 Johnson, Joe G Son M W 14 Grade 6 b Arkansas same place in 1935 - page 3B - Johnson, Fred Jr Son M W 12 Grade 5 b born Arkansas, In Arkansas in 1935 This census reports that the last child was born in Arkansas, and in the 1930 census, they are living in Arkansas, but Fred Jr is reported as born in Missouri. If indeed he was born in Arkansas this would mean they moved form Missouri in about 1906. There is a discrepancy in the age of Fred Jr, since he was reported as 12 years old in 1940, but was almost 4 years old in 1930, at 3 years 11 months. Since they were living in Arkansas in 1930, but Fred is reported born in Missouri, it is likely that the Arkansas report is correct, and that the 1930 enumerator just erroneously copied the birth place of Missouri as for the other children. On a facebook photo of three of Mary Crow Maddox' daughters, on an unidentified FB tribute site: "Left to Right: Georgia Maddox Johnson Thompson, Carrie McClain Criswell, Ollye Maddox Kratz. Did she move back up there after her children left home? But her parents and other family were in Arkansas County. Since the place of death is not documented that may be an error.
