I have not reconstructed the parentage of Benjamin fully, but he is connected to a different line of McSwains than the main clan in Tryon-Rutherford, North Carolina. It appears this Benjamin comes from Baltimore in another early line of McSwains. Details are limited. A couple of genealogies are helpful. It appears that Ben's parents were David McSwain and Hannah Jones. David was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, then his family moved to Baltimore, Maryland. -- http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=edhellis&id=I09603 It is possible he is a son of the Benjamin McSwain born 1766, son of William David McSwain and Susanna Hamrick. I have not been able to find a marriage for the elder Benjamin or parentage for the younger. The location would match. Note that records show Benjamin McSwain born about 1772 to 1782, and Rebecca (Rabakah) Smith born about 1790. The discrepancy in their ages likely indicates this is a second marriage for Benjamin, but I have not found an earlier marriage for that Benjamin. The date of 1772 comes from one or more undocumented genealogies, so confidence for that date is very low. It is likely there is a generation missing somewhere, and there was another Benjamin McSwain in between. Censuses matching him place his birth about 1782 or 1783. This would match better with Rebecca Smith's birth in about 1790, also supported by census reports. I found a marriage record and bond record that matches these names, but note below that the date of marriage is 1810. Ben is reported in some sources as born in 1772. The 1850 census for Ben and Rebecca reports an age making Ben born in 1782, which is more reasonable. In the 1860 census, several children age only 4 years since 1850! There is frustratingly little information available on the early American generations of the McSwains. The genealogies are just repeats of the bare info. Most have only the name and birth date, no wife or other details. ------------------- Some may have confused this Benjamin McSwain with one born about 1777 or later, who married a Rebecca Smith born about 1790. the discrepancy in their ages seems to indicate this is a second marriage for Benjamin, but I have not found an earlier marriage for that Benjamin. Benjamin Franklin McSwain is from a line of McSwains from Isle of Skye who migrated directly from Skye to Baltimore. Though all McSwains come from the Isle of Skye, B F is in a different line of McSwains from the dominant clan in Tryon-Rutherford County, North Carolina, which this genealogy documents. These original McSwain settlers in North Carolina came through Pennsylvania and Virginia to the Tryon-Rutherford area before a son of the Baltimore family came to that area. The two lines merged there as the newcomer McSwains began marrying into the same other prominent families as the old McSwain line: Hamricks, Greens (also spelled Greene) and Moores. Other families that married with these families and the McSwains are the Bridges and Bosticks. Padgetts also figure into this, as shown in my genealogy, especially in the western branch in Tennessee and Arkansas. Children and grand-children of William David McSwain and Judith Moore married members of this broad Green-Moore family and members of both McSwain families. 1850 Federal Census, Cleveland County, North Carolina, 21 August, page 276, Hse/ Family #325 Benjamin McSwain 32 M Farmer $110 North Carolina Nancy McSwain 30 F North Carolina George McSwain 4 M North Carolina Bury McSwain 1 M North Carolina After the death of his first wife Nancy Green, Benjamin Franklin McSwain married Judith Green. Judith is reported as Juda, and I have found some genealogies follow this entry for her name. She is reported as 21 years old, but family sources give us her birthday as 18 July 1837, so she is actually 23. Isaac L here matches the child Lenard in the Hamrick list. And he matches Isaac L in the 1870 census. We may take this to mean the full name is Isaac Lenard/Leonard McSwain Mary E is probably Mary Ellen, matching Ellen in the Hamrick list. Joseph E is listed with his full name in the Hamrick Data as Joseph Embolden. I have not found a child in the censuses to match Candas. Benjamin Bussie is an additional child born after the 1880 census. There is no child in the Hamrick list to match Nancy G, age 18in 1870 and age 28 in the 1880 census. She would have been born about 1852, but that was while Ben was married to his first wife Nancy. But no child named Nancy appears in the 1860 census with Ben and Juda (Judith). Yet she is reported as a daughter of Ben in the 1880 census.

Bennie Dean McSwain is the son of one of the original immigrants from North Carolina to Arkansas County, Arkansas. His parents were Phillip K and Martha McSwain, both born in North Carolina, though t appears they did not marry till after the McSwains' arrival in Arkansas. (The 1930 census errs for some reason in reporting Bennie's mother born in South Carolina, while his father was born in North Carolina.) He is listed in the 1900 census as Benjamin and as Ben in 1910. But all other records refer to him as Bennie or Bennie D. His granddaughter reports that his name was actually Bennie Dean, not Benjamin Dean as we would expect. He went by Bennie all his life, and this is the name on his gravestone. His middle name Dean was found in his WWI Draft Registration information. His granddaughter confirmed it in correspondence several years later. "My parents were Bennie Dean McSwain Jr (not Benjamin) and Jennie Claire (Dudley) McSwain. ... My grandfather Bennie Dean McSwain (not Benjamin) - his birth certificate says he was an orphan. My brother is Edward Dean McSwain." -- Jeanie McSwain Hardey, Geneanet Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 14 February 2017 Note that Jeanie also says Bennie Dean his birth certificate reported that he was an orphan. This would indicate that his parents adopted him. But I also note that both his parents died when he was a young man. His father died in when Bennie was about 21 and his mother died the next year. Phillip and all his brothers appear in the Giles County, Tennessee, in the 1870 census, and no wives are with them. Since that census did not report marital status, it is not certain, but it appears they were all still single. In 1900 he is listed as Benjamin. The 1900 census tells us he was born in Arkansas in June 1886. He was called Bennie D. His granddaughter says his name was just Bennie, not Benjamin, as some records have, and as Bennie D's sister-in-law reports. He married Mary Winona Rownd of the Ethel community, who went by the nickname Nona. They moved to Little Rock some time before 1937, when they were reported in the city directory. Their son Bennie Dean Jr, unmarried at that time, was also reported. Bennie Dean registered for WWII in Little Rock and he and Nona were again reported in the 1951 Little Rock City Directory, with Bennie Jr and his wife Jennie (Dudley). Then in 1953, Bennie Dean Sr was no longer listed and Nona was reported as the widow of Bennie D. But Bennie d had not died. He moved to California, where he died in 1969. He and Nona must have divorced, though no record has been found. Perhaps they just separated about 1952 and just never formalized it legally. In 1960, Winona, as well as her son Bennie Dean and his wife Jennie (Dudley), were reported in the Enid, Oklahoma, directory, and they later moved to Aurora, Colorado, where all three died. Bennie Dean Sr and Nona are buried in the Mt Pleasant Cemetery in their home community of Ethel, Arkansas. We have the name Bennie D for the father from a gravestone that appears to match this individual in Mt Pleasant Cemetery, Ethel, Arkansas, where other family members are buried, even though Bennie D is reported as living in Los Angeles at the time of death. The father's name appears as Benjamin in the Arkansas censuses of 1900 - 1910, and as Benny or Bennie later. "My parents were Bennie Dean McSwain Jr (not Benjamin) and Jennie Claire (Dudley) McSwain. ... My grandfather Bennie Dean McSwain (not Benjamin) - his birth certificate says he was an orphan. My brother is Edward Dean McSwain." -- Jean Frances McSwain Hardey, Geneanet Messaging to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 14 February 2017 "Nona, as she was called, was married to Ben McSwain (Benjamin) and Bennie Dean Jr was their only child. He had a daughter (Diane) by a first wife but I don't know her name. He later married Jennie Claire, whose maiden name I do not know). This would seem to confirm that his middle was also the same as his father's. One anomaly with this source, however, is that the years of the report of an address and phone name under this name are 1993-1999. Bennie died in 1992. I expect his wife kept the phone in his name, as we find for many widows. However, the date of death I have for Jennie, as from Social Security, is in 1997. But this phone listing continued for the years 1998 and 1999. This is a common problem in these compilations from disparate sources. Bennie D, Bennie, and the two women Mary and Jennie all received their Social Security numbers in Arkansas, so it appears they remained in residence in Arkansas until at least after 1837, the first year of the Social Security Death Index.
