Notes for Sarah Ann MCSWAIN

"My great grandmother was Sarah Ann McSwain Callahan (1875-1961) born and died
in Cleveland Co., N.C. According to my research her father was Larkin
Arkansas McSwain (1849-1929); son of Wm. Berry McSwain (1822-1904: son of
David McSwain (1782-1860) who was married to Susanna Hamrick (1784-1894, which
would have made her 110 yrs old). Sarah and Berry are buried at Beaver Dam
Baptist Church west of Shelby, N.C. Larkin Arkansas McSwain is supposedly
buried at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Swainsville, N.C."

Notes for Sarah H MCSWAIN

For a long time I could find no information indicating that Sarah H McSwain
ever married. Finally in March 2008, I found one family genealogy, by Shane
Hamrick, that reported the spouse of Susannah H McSwain. She married James
Louis Hamrick in 1872. James was born in 1852 and died in 1907, according to
Shane.

In the 1850 census she is listed as 2 years old. But family genealogies
report her birth date as 24 December 1846. This would mean that in August
1850, she would have been 3 and almost 4.

1850 Federal Census, Cleveland County, North Carolina, 17 August, Hse/Fam #295
William McSwain 44 M Baptist Preacher $150 Real Estate born North Carolina
Judith McSwain 41 F born North Carolina
Sarah H McSwain 2 F born North Carolina

The census age in 1860 matches the age reported in the 1850 census. I wonder
if along the way somewhere, the family mis-recorded the year of her birth.

passed away at her home here at 8:45 Tuesday night [24 September 1935]. Mrs.
Hamilton had been in declining health for several months.

Mrs. Hamilton was before her marriage Miss Sallie I. McSwain and was born in
this county. Until a few years ago when she moved to Rison, Mrs. Hamilton had
made her home in the Mt. Carmel community. She was a member of the Methodist
church, holding membership in the Mt. Carmel church for a long time.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Mt. Carmel Methodist church this
(Wednesday) afternoon with interment in the church cemetery. Services will be
conducted by her pastor, the Rev. J.G. Gieck, with the Rev. M.E. Scott of this
city assisting.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. R.A. Word of Camden and Mrs. A.A. Ryburn of

The obituary above, dated 25 September (Wednesday) states that death occurred
on the previous Tuesday, which would be 24 September 1935. Yet the
Find-a-Grave memorial reporting this obituary gives the date of death as 21
September, which was the previous Saturday. I have not seen a photo of the
gravestone and can find no transcription of the cemetery. Could the grave
have a different date of death than that reported by the obituary?

Notes for Susanna MCSWAIN

It is noted that with the dates from initial sources, Susannah was born in
1818, which would mean that her mother was over 50 years old when she was
born. The dates come from otherwise solid family sources. I later found
another very high-quality source, a compilation of several McSwain family
researchers, which does not have this person.

I have not been able to identify her with a next-generation or younger
same-generation set of parents. One source reported a birth year of 1788,
which seemed too early.

In July 2007, I found a genealogy that had an earlier birth date of 1793
instead of 1813. This is more reasonable and in line with the birth dates of
the other children of this family. However, the birth place reported by that
source is Orange County, sources report Rutherford County, and the new source
reported the other children as born in Rutherford County. That would put
Susannah as the odd one out with three after her born in Rutherford again. So
I am reporting Rutherford County as the place, but the date as about 1793.

In 1850, Susannah is already out of the home, and not listed in the 1850
census. She was almost 18 at the time of the census (birthday in October,
census in August).

At some point after their son Jimmie's birth in 1940, Juanita and Thad
divorced. Then Thad married someone named Mildred. Her name on her
gravestone in Stuttgart Cemetery has the name as Mildred S McSwain. This
would be Mildred Sutton McSwain.

"[Cousin George McSwain and I] have a common uncle and cousin that we were
both close to. The cousin Sue, was a trademark attorney for TI in Dallas for
many years. Dad had a brother, Thad, who had a daughter Sue McSwain. Thad was
the inventor in the family and was always coming up with innovative ideas. He
was married twice and had two families. I can think of 4 of [the children]
offhand."
-- Kenneth Wirt McSwain, Thad's cousin, Facebook messaging to Orville Boyd
Jenkins, 16 June 2017

Before I got the above comments from Ken, I had no information on a second
marriage for Thad. Ken says Mildred was Thad's second wife, but he was not
aware that his first wife was also named Mildred, since she went by Juanita.
It seems ironic that they should both have the name Mildred.

With a few more details for Ken, enough new perspectives were gained to
produce productive new searches. This led to documentation of Thad's second
marriage to Mildred, whose full Social Security record reports her to be
Mildred Sutton, with earlier marriages that changed her name to Smith then
DeSpain. Their record of marriage in Arkansas County have her name as Mildred
S Despain.

With a few clues at this point a Social Security record in the Applications
and Claims database provided details that Mildred was a Sutton, and was
married to a Smith and a DeSpain before marrying Thad McSwain. No dates of
marriage have been found so far for any of these. The search algorithm was
then able to find Thad and Mildred's marriage record, which had been hiding
previously.

Mildred was in California as a young woman. I do not have details, but found
that her Social Security number had been issued in California "Before 1951."
She was back in Stuttgart, Arkansas in later life. In the 1960s, I visited
Thad and Mildred with my wife-to-be Edith McSwain. I have not found details
confirming this, but I surmise she and Thad were in California during World
War II.

An earlier record for Thad at an address in Stuttgart matched another record
for Mildred

Notes for Thomas MCSWAIN

A transcription of gravestone information for Rutherford and Cleveland County
cemeteries (http://www.rfci.net/wdfloyd/cemm5.html) includes the information
for Thomas McSwain. His grave had no birth date, but did give the death date
and the age in days. This was transcribed in the online registry as:
"McSwain, Thomas 76 years, 8 [3?] mos, 14 days [= born 8 April 1796]
December 22, 1872 McSwain Cemetery, Cleveland Co, NC"

The date for Thomas' birth in other sources indicates they have read the
number of months as 3 instead of 8. This yields the date of birth 8 September
1796. Since this is the date used in other genealogies, I also am following
this interpretation of the grave information.

If it is actually 8 months, then the birth date would appear to be 8 April
1796.

careful, reports an earlier daughter Sarah, which matches reports in other
genealogies. This Sarah McSwain married William B McSwain, son of William
McSwain (b 1792) and Mary Nancy Bridges.

Holden reports another early child Mary born in 1820. Holden also reports the
first child found here, Elizabeth, but reports her birth year as 1821, and her
brother William's as 1822. Note that the enumerator listed Elizabeth first,
but her age is younger than the following brother George. Could the age be
wrong, intending 29 instead of 21 as written?

After Elizabeth, Holden then has daughter Judea (b 1823) and Hannah (b 1825)
before George, whom we find here in the 1850 census, born about 1827. Note
that in addition to this Elizabeth, Holden also reports another daughter, born
in 1829, named Eliza. This is the one child others report under the name
Eliza or Elizabeth, born in 1829.

Hannah, matching the age given by Holden, appears in the 1870 census in
Thomas' household, as a widow, keeping house for her widowed father, with a
large group of her own children. (See 1870 census below.) If Selena was
having children as early as Sarah in 1816, then the marriage date of 1823
reported in some sources is not correct.

But in this 1850 census, Elizabeth is only 21 years old, making her born in
1829. Holden, unfortunately, has not provided analysis or sources on this
section of his genealogy, so in this case, I am uncertain where to place
Sarah. With the birth dates I have, Sarah would be born in 1816 (1860 census
and genealogies) and then there is a gap of years to Elizabeth, born in 1829.
William could be in between, in 1822 as Holden proposes.

Notes for Thomas MCSWAIN

The date of birth on the Hamrick Data Pages for Thomas McSwain Jr is not
consistent with the date based on age in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. The
Hamrick pages gives the following information:

"McSwain, Thomas (1796 - 1872)
b. 8 Sep 1796, d. 22 Dec 1872
spouse Bridges, Salena W "Frankie" (1793 - 1862)
child McSwain, Thomas (*1824 - )"
-- Hamrick Data Pages,
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hamrick/wga75.html

In the 1850 census, Thomas Jr is 12 years old; in the 1860 census he is 22.
These two ages are coherent. These yield a birth year of 1838, not 1824! I
wonder if the Hamrick data has confused the birth date with another Thomas
McSwain (Jr). There was a George Thomas McSwain who was born in December
1823. I have not been able to determine who his father was.

It appears to be this Thomas McSwain who is enumerated in Stices Shoals in the
1870 census as George McSwain with his wife Malissa. His age of 32 years and
location in Stices Shoals where his family lived in previous censuses support
this. There are no clear secondary facts to make this identification
definitive. Thomas McSwain Sr and his wife Frankie Bridges are enumerated on
two census pages earlier than this George. But no comparable entry has been
found in the 1870 census for a Thomas McSwain to fit his description.

Note that the name George Thomas in the Hamrick files may indicate his full
name, and provide a link to this George on 1870. But the uncertainty of his
birth date in the Hamrick files weakens that source.

A serious factor that makes the identification of our Thomas with this George
doubtful is that the oldest child here is reported as 15 years old, so should
be about 5 in the 1860 census. But in the 1860 census, Thomas was reported
with no wife, still in the home of his father. This George McSwain seems to
be George Washington McSwain, son of another William McSwain and his wife
Judith Hamrick. His birth was likely as reported by the Hamrick Pages in
1836, which matches the 1860 census for that George. Two other census ages,
including 1870, make it 1838, which is not unusual for census ages in that
era. just for reference, here is the 1870 census for George McSwain, who
appears to be that son George of William and Judith Hamrick McSwain.
