Her obituary refers to her father as Marvin Middleton. Her first name on her gravestone is spelled Murriel. It is common in this region to pronounce the name Murriel as Merle. The same pronunciaton is spelled in the census as Myrle. In her obituary, included in her memorial, the name is spelled Merle. This is the name she is given in her memorial, even though it is spelled Murriel on the grave. Her maiden name is reported in the memorial as Middleton, but she is reported with the last name of Tucker in the 1930 census, as is her mother. Her mother was reported marreid in 1924 to James Jones in Faulkner County. This would seem to be Merle's father. No birth record has been found for Merle or a death record or divorce record for James Jones, nor a marriage record for Marvin Middleton and Lola Tucker/Jones. Likewise no burial record has been found for either man. In the 1940 census, Merle is reported with the surname of Middletion, in her grandparents' home. She must have begun going by this name after her mother married Marvin Middletion. Also in 1940, the enumerator heard her name and entered it as Myrtle. Merle's mother died in 1940, but must have married Marvin Middleton between the 1930 census and her death. Two or more genealogies claim that Alice was the wife of a Thomas Middleton, and as documentation they attach an 1880 census of a Thomas Middleton (Junior), 9 months old, born September 1879, son of Thomas and Ellen. Jack Dempsey married in about 1880. It oweuld have been after the census that year, since he wsa reported as single in his father's household. There are some indications that his wife was named Middleton. But one undocumented genealogy names her Emma Vanderford. Jack may have been married twice. Many people in this era lost spouses. In 1910 Jack Dempsey and his family are living on the White River. Everyone in this division of Prairie Township are fishermen. Note that both Andy Middleton and Jackson Dempsie are both reported as Head of this household and owners of their home. For some odd reason, the enumerator has recorded no first name for the Jack's wife or his two daughters. No firm documentation has been found for Jack's wife, not even a marriage record, but there are some indications that she was a Middleton. That matches their residential situation in 1910, being resident in the household of one Andy Middleton. Andy is reported as a 50-year-old widower.
