Several genealogies report on David and his father and his descendants. Various genealogies have different details that produce a consistent picture of David. David came to Virginia with his father John Crawford, from Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1643, receiving a land grant from Governor Berkley. David's father was killed in a battle with Indians in a campaign called Bacon's Rebellion. David was also killed by Indians on 13 December 1689 on New Kent County, Virginia. David is reported by some data collections and genealogies as being born in Hanover County, Virginia, instead of Scotland. It is not clear if there was another similar family of Crawfords, or if the reference in Hanover and Kent refer to the dame family, with dates mangled. Locations of the Crawfords in Hanover County may also refer to this same family, but dates of some life events are different in records referencing Hanover County. They are associated with a plantation in Broaddus Flats which is in Hanover County. -- See http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/53277220/person/13483432430/photo/9398d7cb-0d9a-44af-a86a-753fd8ce0c33?src=search David Crawford, b abt 1625 in Kilburney, Ayrshire, Scotland, d 1704; wife Unknown; children: Elizabeth, Judith, Angelina, David, Capt b 1662 -- Ancestry World Tree, Valleau Family, http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm?cgi?op=GET&db=valleaux&id=I05996 Some stories and genealogies report that David lived until 1710, but others report an exact death date of 13 December 1689. I have not been able to sort this out from original sources, and have followed the earlier death date, which still allows for the other known facts about his children's birth. Here is one short story that tells about David. Note that he is referred to as a Colonel in some sources. This story reports that he was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1892, after the date reported by many sources as his date of death in 1689. =============================================== Colonel David Crawford Colonel David Crawford (c. 1625 - 1710) was a member of the House of Burgesses and an early plantation owner in Virginia. David Crawford was born circa 1625, in Scotland, emigrating to the Virginia Colony with his father, John Crawford around 1643. His father was later killed in Bacon's Rebellion of 1676. Crawford amassed many acres of land and owned a large plantation that eventually became the site of Richmond, Virginia. On April 2, 1692 he was elected to the House of Burgesses as one of two representatives from New Kent County, Virginia for two years. He introduced a piece of legislation, requiring that County Clerks maintain an office in their respective County Courthouse. As an elderly man he was killed by some Pamunkey Indians in 1710 in New Kent County, Virginia. [other sources report he died in 1689.] -- Karen Tadora, Crawford Tree, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/4361878/person/-1592855067/story/a26595fa-784f-49c3-a651-b594b9be1d53?src=search&ftm=1 =============================================== I have found the information attached to David Crawford who died in 1710 to show that his parents are John Crawford and Mary McConnell. It appears the David Crawford in the line I am presenting here was Margaret Cunningham. It appears that the John Crawford who married Mary McConnell is a different David Crawford than the David Crawford I identify who was born in 1625. The same birth year is given for both these John Crawfords but the death year is different. There were numerous Crawfords in colonial Virginia. Death records report death of a David Crawford in 1697, 1700 and 1710, as well as the 1689 I report here. These seem to have been mixed and I have been certain how to clarify the family lines. These death reports do not report parents or birth dates for comparison. I have not been able to definitively clarify which connection is the one for my actual family. I am keeping this Crawford Question under advisement. The first references I found to this David Crawford were unaware of the name of David's wife. In July 2009, I found a credible genealogy with good details that reported David's wife as Jane, but with maiden name unknown. David Crawford b: 1625 in Ayrshire, Kilburney, Scotland d: December 13, 1689 in New Kent Co, VA + Jane ? m: 1654 in James City, VA b: 1633 in VA -- Descendants of David Crawford, http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bjcasey/crawford.htm Note that the Valleaux genealogy reports a death year of 1704, while the Crawford genealogy reports an exact date of 13 Dec 1689. Due to the precision of this latter date, and other credible detail in this genealogy, this is what I am using as the date of death for David. This source also provides his place of death. I have also added details on David and Jane's son Captain David Crawford and his wife Ann Anderson and their daughter Judith. [Ann may be the stemother of Judith, Elizabeth Smith likely being the birth mother; two families of Crawfords may also be confused in the data collections used as sources.] The Crawford lineage is of importance to this genealogy because Judith married Joseph Terry and ancestor of Lewis Terry, and his descendant Julia Virginia Terry, who married Joseph Asa Jenkins, my grandmother, in 1901 in Indian Territory. The Crawfords of Hanover County may be the same Crawford lineage, but there is confusoin on dates of death, with death reported variously in Hanover or Kent. -- Orville Boyd Jenkins, genealogist The compilation called the Millennium Collection records the following information about David Crawford, son of John Crawford an Margaret Cunningham. The name also appears as Assaquin, David Crawford was awarded the Assassquin land for services to Governor Berkely in Bacon's rebellion in Virginia Colony. The history of the area finds his surname spelled Crafford. The family's story is recorded in tdetail by Mary Callaway Jones. I have found several Crawford genealogies that report seemingly reliable information about the David Crawford and his lineage. I have found three reported birthplaces in Virginia for this same David Crawford: New Kent Co, the family estate Tusculum in Amherst Co, James City County, Scotland. Some of these sources may be guessing, or there may be confusion and mixing of sources int he collections for more than one generation of David Crawfords. "David CRAWFORD, Birth: Amherst Co, Va (Tusculum); Partnership with: Elizabeth SMITH, Child: Judith CRAWFORD" -- RootsWeb, Crawford, http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~jeanette/p00000c6.htm#I17315 David Crawford Born Sep 1662 in Jamestown, James City, Virginia Died Sep 1762 in Amherst County, Virginia Parents David Crawford Esq 1625-1710 Jane Unknown 1633-1710 -- Crawfords in Salzar Family, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/8170547/person/-928446944?ssrc=&ftm=1 Family Data Collection - Individual Records David Crawford Spouse: Elizabeth Smith Parents: David Crawford Birth 1662 Kent Co, VA Marriage Date: 1695 Death 1762 Amherst Co, VA U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 David Crawford Gender: Male Birth 1662 VA Spouse Name: Elizabeth Smith Spouse Birth Year: 1665 Marriage Year: 1695 Some genealogies report David had a wife named Ann Anderson, but do not state any source or provide any information. I cannot find any marriage record or anything to connect these two names. It appears from her age and other records, however, that Ann married this David's son, who was born in 1697. Ann Anderson is reported to have been born in 1705-1708 (after some of David's children) and to have died in 1803. But Elizabeth Smith, for whom I find multiple reports and records as Captain David's wife, died in 1767 (making her 102 years old, not likely). There is an indication that there was a generation missed in the sources I originally referenced. This appeared to be confirmed when in July 2013 I found a report in an application for the Sons of the American Revolution reporting Ann Anderson as the wife of David Crawford born in 1697, who was the son of David Crawford born in 1662. This seemed to resolve the conflicts in the previous sources. Elizabeth's death year was probably 1727. Undocumented genealogy reports place her death in Amherst (in 1767), but I have not found a record to that effect. "Captain David Crawford b: 1662 in New Kent Co.VA d: September 1762 in Amherst Co, VA; parents David Crawford b: 1625 in Ayrshire, Kilburney, Scotland d: December 13, 1689 in New Kent Co, VA + Jane ? m: 1654 in James City, VA b: 1633 in VA; married Ann Anderson m: 1727 in Hanover Co, VA b: 1708 in Hanover Co, VA d: 1803 in Amherst Co, VA; among his children: Judith Crawford b: 1705 in Hanover Co, VA d: 1772" -- Descendants of David Crawford, http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bjcasey/crawford.htm Note that the wife of David Crawford (born 1662) is reported here as Ann Anderson born 1705. There is a reference to Ann Anderson in Terry family tradition. Jacque Watkins, another Terry descendant, and I have worked on the Terry lineages and have reviewed sources she has collected from others. "Lewis Terry's parents: Thomas Terry (1732-1818) and Nancy Dalton (daughter of Robert Dalton and Mary Key). Thomas Terry was the son of Joseph Terry and Judith Crawford (daughter of David Crawford and Ann Anderson)" -- Jacque Watkins, email correspondence to Orville Boyd Jenkins, September 2008, citing Don Johnston, husband of a descendant This source does not comment on the birth of Judith Crawford and of Ann Anderson virtually coinciding. And the source does not document the source for these bits of information. Genealogies with full information for Ann report she was born in 1708 (3 years after Judith was born) and died in 1803. Other sources indicate that Ann Anderson married David Crawford who was born in 1697, the son of David Crawford and Elizabeth Smith. This creates a problem for the Terry record from Thomas Terry who reports that the parents of his mother Judith were David Crawford and Ann Anderson, though these women were about the same age. It appears that Judith was the daughter of David Crawford born 1662 and Elizabeth Smith. The dates of David's marriage to Elizabeth and their other children indicate Elizabeth is Judith's mother. There may also be some confusion over two individuals named David Crawford. There are mixed records in the data collections, referencing Hanover County. There may two Crawford lines with similar names in Hanover and New Kent Counties. There is also some indication that the same David Crawford (son of John Richard) received land in Hanover and New Kent Counties. I have come to the current information about this person in three stages. First there was a line that just ended with the name of John Crawford's father as "Earl Crawford." Sources I had seen at that point were not clear if this man's given name is Earl, or if this is the title. Records indicate that the Crawford family held the title of Earl of Glencairn, but I have not probed details. The line of Crawfords we are looking at here, whose descendant Judith Crawford later married Joseph Terry in Virginia, appear to be from the family of the Earls of Glencairn. The lines of descent are a bit confused in the sources I have found (as of October 2008) so I have not yet included all the details here. There is some uncertainty, since some researchers have tried to connect our John Crawford (who emigrated to the colonies) to the Earl of Crawford. But the Earldom of Crawford was a title of the Lindsay family from the time of its creation in 1398. David Lindsay was created Earl of Crawford in 1398. The title remained in Lindsay hands through the time when John Crawford was born around 1900. It is possible that the Crawford line in the colonies with which we are concerned was from a younger son of the Earl of Crawford, who used the name of the Earldom of his family as the surname in the New World. A second possibility is that this was a member of the Crawford family, also as yet unidentified, whose family held the Earldom of Glencairn referred to above. In early July 2009 I found a genealogy that gave the name of John's father as Malcolm, born in about 1570 n Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, Scotland. This genealogy traces the family line back several generations earlier, to an earlier Malcolm. There is no mention of an Earl. -- Descendants of Malcolm Crawford, http://www.keenekreations.net/genealogy/crawford.html#721C A few hours later I found a further genealogy, again with good detail, that reported another generation in that sequence. The father of John was another John, born in 1778, whose father was Malcolm. This genealogy reported Malcolm's birth date as 1551. This one also traces the line farther back consistently. I did tie this line to the Earls of Crawford, of the family name Lindsay, in Ayrshire. One personage of that early line was: Sir John de CRAUFORD of Ardoch (1st of Craufurdland), Born: abt. 1222 Died: abt. 1295. John was married to Alicia of DALSALLOCK -- http://fabpedigree.com/s092/f005120.htm This line is also reported back by others. I found Sir John of Ardoch in the Salzar genealogy, which I have cited in several instances: Sir John de Crawford, Born Abt 1222 in Clydesdale, Lanarkshire, Scotland, Died 1295 in Clydesdale, Lanarkshire, Scotland; married 1252 in Clydesdale, Lanarkshire, Scotland to Alicia (de) Dalsallock (Born Abt 1225 in Scotland, United Kingdom) -- http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/8170547/person/-926708620

Margaret's obituary gives her name only as Maggie D Green. The funeral notice gives the name as Margaret (Maggie) D. Green. Maggie's obituary and funeral notice say she was born in Memphis, Tennessee. But in the 1930 census, where she is listed as Maggie D, her place of birth is reported as Texas. The reported birthplace of her Welch children and Donnie Green also shows their mother's birthplace as Texas. But the 1910 and 1920 censuses report her as born in Tennessee. In 1910 Maggie and her husband Thomas Jo Welch are living in Rush Springs, in southern Grady County, north of Marlow, Oklahoma.. 1910 Federal Census, Grady County, Oklahoma, 3 April, Rush Springs, District 106, page 8B, Hse/Fam #153 Welch, Thomas J Head M W 30 Married 10 yrs NC NC TN Farmer Rents Welch, Maggie Wife F W 27 Married 10 yrs 5 children/5 living TN AR AL Welch, Harvey Son M W 9 Single Ind Terr NC TN Welch, Daniel [Manuel] Son M W 7 Single Ind Terr NC TN Welch, Minnie Dau F W 6 Single Ind Terr NC TN Welch, Menuf [Menus] Son M W 7 Single Ind Terr NC TN Welch, James Son M W 1 Single OK NC TN There is some confusion in genealogies and records concerning the child listed above as Menuf. Some genealogies have a seemingly matching child as Menus. But ages don't match. The Bailey Cemetery list has an entry for Menus H Welch, born in 1906 and dying in 1917. This would explain his absence in 1920. I have not seen a genealogy that has both Manuel and Menus. It appears the enumerator wrote Daniel instead of Manuel. The child Daniel in 1910, reported as age 7, matches Manuel L of 1920, at age 17. 1920 Federal Census, Grady County, Oklahoma, 20 February, Rush Springs, District 186, page 13A, Hse #220, Fam #223 Welch, Maggie D Head Owns F W 37 Widow TN AR AL Farmer Welch, Manuel L Son M W 17 OK NC TN Welch, Minnie F Dau F W 15 OK NC TN Welch, Jimmie D Son M W 11 OK NC TN Welch, Hollie M Dau F W 9yrs4mos OK NC TN Welch, Anna E Dau F W 7 OK NC TN Welch, Thomas J Son M W 5yrs2mos OK NC TN Welch, Burley J Son M W 4mos OK NC TN Welch, Pearley I Dau F W 4mos OK NC TN Welch, Harvey C Son M W 18 OK NC TN Welch, Nora I Dau-in-law F W 14 OK AL MO I find it interesting that the only child reported as working on the farm is 18-year-old Harvey.
