There aer several people in this line named Amos Bradford Strange. A LeStrange family researcher explains where the name Bradford came from, along with other LeStrange lore. -------------------------------------------------- The name ... Bradford came from a town in England near where Alexander Strange SR. came from in about 1672. Alexander SR. was sent here by King George to keep an eye on the colonies, I do have the name of the ship he came on but can't lay my hands on it right now. If you don't know the Strange family in England were part of the noble class and the family castle still stands there. It was given to Hoel Le Strange in about 1050, it is called Hunstanton Hall. Hoel Le Strange was the 11th Count of Britttany and came with William the First when he invaded England. [The timeline is off for this explanation of events. The castle date of 1050 is 16 years before the invasion of William the Conqueror when he enforced his heritable claim on the throne of the Anglo-Saxon-Danish kingdoms of Greatr Britain. Facts available indicate that Hoel LeStrange either inherited or bought the land or received it as a fief unrelated to his later allegiance to William the Norman. He was already setttled on the land by the time William invaded Britain. [The story of the Rose below indicates that Hoel LeStrange did support the Norman Conquest. There were a strong familial and political relationships between Noramndy (Normans) and Brittainy (Celtic-Norman mix) and the famliy remained allied to the Norman dynnsty through the centuries. It may be that the actual castle Hunstanton was not bestowed until after the invasion was successful, but Hoel was in Norfolk before the Conqueror invaded.] This is a document I found written in the 17th century by William Dugdale about the Strange family: The Le Strange Legend It is said that, at a justs held in the Peke of Derbyshire at Castle Peverell (of which have taken notice in my discourse on the family of Fitz Warin), which amongst divers other persons of note, Oweyn Prince of Wales, and son of the King of Scots, were present, there were also two Sons of the Duke of Bretaigne: and that the younger of them named Guy, was called Guy Le Strange, from whom the several families of Le Stranges did descend. Another one The Rose of Le Strange For meritorious services rendered, William the Norman, also known as William the Congueror and William I, made a gift of the historic Hunstanton Hall located near Sandringham, England, to be the Le Strange's and their descendants. The condition of the gift was that the Le Stranges were to annually present to the King on St. John the Baptist day a rose. Hence the estate and thte custom was know by the poetic name of "The Rose of Le Strange. -- Paul H. The census report above would indicate that Arlie was born in either 1909 or 1908. Note that Arlin's mother's maiden name is reported as Gay. In previous information I have seen it, the name Gay appeared to be a nickname for the middle name Gabriel. It appeared from the few sources I could find that the maiden name was Nixon. Perhaps this is a very similar but different Arlin/Arlie Strange. The 1920 census for Samuel and Samantha and family does record this child as Arlin, lending further support to the name as reported in the California Death Index. Note that this also reports the name of Arlin's mother as Gabriel, supporting our family data from Elisa. 1920 Federal Census, Wichita County, Texas, 19 January, Justice Precinct 4, District 132, page 8A, Hse #139, Fam #152 Strange, Sam Head Rents M W 47 AL GA GA Farmer (abt 1872) Strange, Gabriel Wife F W 47 AL AL AL No occupation (abt 1872) Strange, Arlin Son M W 11 Single TX AL AL No Occupation (abt 1908)

In 1910 Arthur and Victoria live two houses down form her parents, Joseph R and Nancy J. In between is another Burchfiel family headed by a widow Ellen F, age 42. Going by the age, she is probably a sister-in-law of Joseph, who was married to his brother. But I have not put together all the Burchfiel family information. I have not found records for the family in the 1920 census. I find a few more details in Arthur's Draft Registration for WWI, dated 12 September 1918. Their residence is on Rural Route 2 of Dandridge, the county seat of Jefferson County. He is registered as a self-employed farmer. No middle name is listed in his registration, which is unusual. He signs it the same way, simply Arthur Strange. He has brown eyes, and black hair. Family sources give us the middle name of Seton. The registrar is a kinsman of his wife, named W W Burchfiel. In 1930 they and their two young children are living with Victoria's father, and their son Loyd is living next door with his wife Vida, who have been married about one year. Joseph is a widow, so we know that Victoria's mother Nancy died sometime between April 1910 and April 1930. The 1920 census would be helpful here to fill out the family's details. This 1930 census gives us the name of the road they live on, Parrots Chapel Road. Victoria's father, J R Burchfiel, is listed as head of house, but with no occupation. Arthur is the one listed as a farmer. Loyd's occupation is Laborer. 1930 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 10 April, Civil District 8, Enumeration District 15, page 5A, Parrots Chapel Road, Hse #94, Fam #96 Burchfiel J R Head Owns home M W 71 Widowed TN TN TN No Occupation Strange, Arthur Son-in-law Rents home M W 49 Married at age 23 TN TN TN Farmer Strange, Victoria Daughter F W 50 Married at age 24 TN TN TN Strange, Virgie Granddaughter F W 19 TN TN TN Strange, Alger Grandson M W 15 TN TN TN -- Hse#95, Fam #97 -- Strange, Loyd Head Rents Home M W 24 Married at age 23 TN TN TN Laborer Strange, Vida Wife F W 18 Married at age 17 TN TN TN

A daughter, Ora Mae, had been born June 7, 1917, but died on Dec 14, 1917 while the family was living in Chattanooga. She was buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in Chattanooga, on Dec 18, 1917. Carl graduated from high school when he was 18 years old, the Class of 1926. He joined the Navy following graduation, service number 294 05 94. He was assigned duty, following basic training, onboard a submarine, USS S-4 (SS-109), which was in the Atlantic Ocean East of Provincetown, Massachusetts, on Dec 17, 1927 when it collided with the USCG ship Pauling. He was one of the many hands who drowned. Carl was interred at the National Cemetery at Chattanooga, Tennessee under the name Carl "Bernice" Strange. The One World Tree which I cite for some facts on the children of this family, has the name Caroline for the first child. The 1870 census lists Delila (Delilah) in that position. This can be understood as a child named Caroline Delila or perhaps Delila Caroline. But since the child is listed in the census as Delila (and likely called by that name by the family), I am putting that name first. Deliah is listed as Caroline in later sources. 1870 Census Jefferson County, Tennessee, 23 July, District 3, PO Trion, p 7, Hse/Fam #43 Strange, William 28 M W Farmer TN [b abt 1842] Strange, Edia 24 F W Kpg Hse TN Strange, Delila 6 F W TN The OWT had conflicting dates for the first two children. Where the census had age 6 for the first two girls (yielding a rough birth year of 1864), the OWT reports Dec 1863 for Caroline and 20 Feb 1864 for Martha S! We know two children cannot be born two months apart to the same woman. The more exact birth date for Martha in OWT matches the year from the census age, 1864. With this reasoning I decided to use that date for the birth date of both Caroline Delila and Martha Susannah. The 1900 census reports Delilah's birth as Oct 1862. 1900 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 13 June, Civil District 3, Enumeration District 43, page 9A, Hse/Fam #155 Hance, Hugh Head W M May 1859 41 Married 20 yrs TN TN TN Farmer Rents Hance, Delilah Wife W F Oct 1862 37 Married 20 yrs 8 children, 8 living TN TN TN A carefully commented source in World Family Tree (Pedigree # 2932) provides the death date and place for Caroline most of the siblings in this family, which are missing in many other sources.
