In the enumeration of the family of Murphy C Strange in 1900, there is no listing for a child matching Luther Carl, who should be 8 years old in that census. Three doors down from William and Edie is the family of Carl's future wife, Daisy Phillips. Next door to them, 2 doors away from William Strange, is Daisy's older brother Perry and his new wife Lennie. I see that in this census, Mary is said to be age 65. This would yield a birth year of 1855. But a family genealogy by Claude V Hall reports her actual birth date as 23 August 1859. This would mean she was only 61 years old. Claude V Hall reports on the Strange family in his genealogy. Claude's wife was Ina Bernice Strange, daughter of Luther Carl Strange. Claude reports that Bernice's father went by the name Carl, which we have seen in the later censuses. Carl died of pancreatic cancer. -- http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=*v14t2932&id=I009 (no longer online)

The Strange genealogy in World Family Tree Pedigree #2932 spells her name Melinda. Malinda M (age 22) in the 1870 census for this family seems to match Malinda (age 1) in the 1850 census. However, the child in the appropriate place for Malinda in the 1860 census is entered as M C. This brings into question her middle name with initial C or M. I have not found a sources that clarifies that with her full name. 1850 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, 23 October, District 13, page 138, Hse #961, Fam #995 James Strange 35 M Farmer Tennessee Susannah Strange 35 F Tenn Sarah Strange 10 F Tenn William Strange 8 M Tenn Manerva Strange 6 F Tenn Amanda Strange 4 F Tenn Jane Strange 2 F Tenn Malinda Strange 1 F Tenn John Strange 3mos M Tenn 1860 Federal Census, Jefferson County, Tennessee, page 333 (Scan p 495), Hse #2360, Family #2403 Jas M Strange 42 M Farmer TN S Strange 38 F TN M C Strange 7 M TN The age is puzzling here, showing Malinda as 7. She was 1 in the 1850 census, taken in October. A family genealogy reports her actual birth date as 27 December 1849, which means she was not really yet one year old in October 1850 , but actually only a few days over 10 months. So her parents or the enumerator rounded up. But the birth date in December 1849 clashes witht eh reported age of her brother John in 1850, age 3 months. so (going by the census daet of 1 June) he was born in abotu February 1850, or about June 1850 (going by the actual date in October when his family was enumerated on that page). On the other hand in 1860, M C is reported as only 7 years old, and she should have had her 10th birthday in December 1859! That means a loss of 3 years for this census. Malinda is buried in Strange Cemetery on Muddy Hollow Road, off Rainwater School Road, in South Jefferson County, Tennessee. The grave is unmarked.
