Notes for Oscar Mitchel STRANGE

Mitchel's name is found at times spelled Mitchell and at other times Mitchel.
In his 1917 WWI registration he signed it as Mitchel.

Marriage 2 Dec 1916 Cocke, Tennessee, USA

On this document, Grace's famliy name is spelled two different ways, Rinehart
in the bond sectoin and Rhinehart in the license section. This surname is
spelled in several ways in both family records and public records, as well as
in femily references in various correspondence.and postings.

Mitchell's WWI Draft Registration clarifies that Mitchell is his middle name
rather than his first name. He is referred to as Mitchell O in the 1910
census. But he signed his name to his registration as Oscar Mitchell Strange.

Mitchell's mother Eliza died in 1911. She is buried, as is William Mack, in
Strange Cemetery in Jefferson County. Mamina was a second wife, and
stepmother of Mitchel. But no marriage record or further details have been
found.

There are two census entries for a Mitchel and Grace Strange, 2 days in a row,
in the same enumaration district. Mitchell gives his age as 23 the first
time, when they are in his father's hosuehold, and the next day, he reprots it
as 24-20, when he and Grace are in their own household. The second
enumeration includes their first son Lee. A grandson provides Grace's full
maiden name name.

"I am the sole surviving child, born 1933, of Oscar M. Strange and Grace Ellen
Strange, nee Rinehart. ... A letter from Eli Strange to brothers Oscar and
George, written in 1946 or so, gave some insight to their childhood
experiences. A son of George Strange gave me a copy of the letter and that
helped to get me started on my research."

----------------------
My father said very little to me about his childhood. But from what he did
say gave me the impression that the survived on meager means. I am sure that
that can be said for for most of the families in their area, which is very
hilly with likely only small amounts of tillable land.

My parents moved to SC in 1922 or early 1923. The move was before my brother
Rex was born, in SC. After some time spent in Enoree, SC, they moved to
Spartanburg County, SC, specifically to a "mill" village name Whitney, where
Rex and the remainder of the children were born. My father worked in cotton
textile mills all of his life. In 1932 or 33, the parents bought 5 acres just
outside Whitney.

No doubt he had harbored a dream of owning his own land. In retrospect, I
later came to realize that in seeking his dream he put my mother to a real
hardship. The acreage had a house of course, but was without
electricity, running water, central heat, and the outhouse was in the pasture.
The house they left had electricity, city water and indoor plumbing. My
mother died of diabetes in 1942. I had just turned 8 the past October. Ahh
yes, the things people put others through to satisfy their wishes and urges.

A short word about genetics. My mother was tall for the times, at about 5' 7
or 8"'s. Taller than my father by an inch. I do not know how tall her sister
"Ida" was but her mother was tall, her dad well over 6' and her brothers were
evidently all tall, closer to 6' than not.

My sibling's height was varied. My sister was 5'1, bother's Rex and Paul were
5'7" or so. Leroy, Bobby, Kenneth and myself were at least 5'10" and I was
6"3" (at age 13). Also, longevity ran with my mother's family. No knowledge
of when GrMother Rinehart died, but GrFather Rinehart lived to at least 75.

My father's family did not do as well, except for Uncle George, who died in
his early 80's. My oldest brother died at 89. My sister was 72. Rex, whom
was disabled by polio at 6 months, died at 54. Brother Paul died late 50's'
or early 60's.. Brother Bobby died at 64. I am 84. Brother Kenny died at
age 75.

I have found a marriage record in Ohio for a child of Senter and Lula that
first appeared to fit Eugene. His mother's name is Lula Strange, and the
father's name is transcribed as Senor L, which could represent Senter L. The
name of the groom is Paul, marrying Doris Van Horn. But other records refer
to the groom as Charles.

Spouse Father's Name Wilbur
Spouse Mother's Name Mabel Trembley
Ceremony performed by T J Vamos, Justice of the Peace

With the names Paul and Charles, I would not initially think this is the same
person as Eugene Strange. But Paul Charles is a child of the same parents,
but this name is unreported for any child by the family descendants who gave
me the names of Eugene and the other children of Senter and Lula.

Another factor enters in now, however. I found the Van Horn family with Doris
and her husband in their household in Cleveland in 1940. The 1940 census
refers to the groom as Charles, not Paul or Eugene. Eugene was born about
August 1916. From his age in the 1940 census, Charles was born about 1917,
and Paul in about 1916 in the marriage record.

Because of the parents and high similarity, this seems definitely to be the
same person as Eugene. Perhaps he had all three names, Eugene Paul Charles.
I have not found any marriage information in the name of Eugene Strange
matching Senter and Lula's son.

Notes for Rachel Adeline STRANGE

From Gregory family research, Loretta Gregory Gay had the name of one child as
Adeline, which did not match any census reports. I note that Rachel is
reported with the middle initial of A, as her sisters Margaret and Tursa also
are.

However, Loretta's list included Margaet and Tursa. It seems likely that the
child reported as Rachel A came to be called by her middle name Adeline, by
which her descendants in Oklahoma remember her. I have reported her with the
full name Rachel Adeline.

This completes the reconciliation of the girls' names from censuses with the
Gregory family list of names of Julia Ann Clementine Strange's siblings.
Rachel's age shows a 2-year discrepancy between 1870 and 1880. This is
probably because her birthday is in the month of July. See notes for Lucinda
Jane on this problem.

Marriage records report that Adaline married McClure Clevenger in 1881. He
was better known as Mack or J Mack. He was John McClure Clevernger Jr. His
father went by Mack.

There was a daughter of Mack and his second wife Mary Hall named Thelma. I
suspect the listing of Thelma above in the children of Adeline was an error.

The child named Tursa in the 1880 census matches Rebecca T in the 1870 census,
following Rachel. Rebecca appears only once inthe family list, in the 1870
census, at age 7.

The name Tursa A appears only in 1880, in the same position where Rebecca A T
appeared in 1870. This leads me to suspect that Rebecca and Tursa are the
same person. The initial T for Rebecca could be for the name Tursa. In 1880
the sequence of the names would be different with the A after Tursa. There is
a 2-year discrepancy in the reported age, but this is pretty consistent on all
persons between the two census.

The name Tursa is found in several families in the mid-1800s, sometimes
spelled Thursa. It appears to be a Scandinavian name (compare the current
Danish name Thura), where it would be pronounced as a "hard" T, not as English
TH. In the 1880 census, her brother Rufus (Ruffus) is married to a woman
named Thursa Rianhart.

Tennessee State Marriages, 1780-2002
R T Strange
Spouse G W Hatley
Marriage 30 Sep 1883 Cocke County

______________
According to the information I have gathered in my family tree, Rebecca T.
Strange was married to my great grandfather George (G.W. Hatley on Sept. 30,
1883) In Cocke County, Tenn.

GW Hatley married again 10 years later, on December 19, 1893, to a Mary E.
Dockins in Cocke County, Tenn. I presume that Rebecca died, but can find no
records of that.

Rebecca and George W Hatley did have a daughter, my grandmother Sarah Hatley
Gann. I know this since my grandmother, Sarah E. Hatley Gann cited Rebecca Ann
Strange as her mother in her obituary. She was buried in Rosemount Cemetery,
Clinton, SC.

Since Sarah E. Hatley was born on Sep. 28, 1886, we know that Rebecca Strange
was alive until that date.
