This child is included, along with two others who died very young, in notes on the family found in famliy papers, in addition to children recorded in the censuses of 1900 and 1910. See notes for Thomas Everett Terry and Carrie Lee. The birth date was found in a list written in the handwriting of Lou Ila Jenkins, from the mid 1950s, with information thought to be from Julia Virginia (Jennie) Terry Jenkins in Chickasha, Grady County, Oklahoma. The death date is found on William's gravestone in Eton Cemetery, Murray County, where the family was living before they moved to Indian Territory. William died three days after his younger sister Carrie Lee. They must have been victims of an epidemic. This seems to have been Yellow Fever. Though the great epidemic year in Georgia was 1876, news stories of the region indicate the "Yellow Jack" was still decimating southeastern US cities in 1888, Jacksonville, Florida, being a major victim. Thomas Duncan was enumerated that same year with his wife Mattie (Martha Wall) that year and their first child, Jennie (Julia Virgina) was born there in December 1880. Joe and Martha would have moved to Texas after August 1886, and moved back to Georgia sometime after March 1890, when their daughter Agnes was born. Their presence in Texas in 1890 is not recorded due to the loss of the 1890 census records in a fire. Thomas Duncan and Mattie moved back to Georgia before the birth of their second child Nannie in 1884. They were enumerated in 1900 just two houses away from Joe and Martha, on the same page of this census, in the same area where they had all lived before their Texas experience. Joseph Lewis Terry also moved to Texas by 1870, but stayed, living in Brazos County, then Milam County, where he died. I notice that in 1900 the birth states of Joe's parents here is reported as North Carolina, rather than Georgia as in the 1880 census. Both census and family information for his father William indicates he was born in South Carolina, and his mother Julia Ann Roberts in North Carolina. I have found no entry for Joe and Martha Oneida for 1910. In 1920, they are in Murray County. Note that Martha is named as Ned. This is the first historical record I have seen that gives us what is apparently her nickname. I first encountered this in the 1930 census, which I found early on in my Terry research. 1920 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 20 January, McDonald District, Enumeration District 137, page 2B, near Hassler's Road, Hse/Fam #29 Terry, Joe Owns Head M W 76 GA GA GA No Occupation [b abt 1843] Terry, Ned Wife F W 73 GA GA GA No Occupation [b abt 1846] Terry, George Son M W 46 Single GA GA GA Farmer [b abt 1873] Terry, Dock Son M W 38 Single GA GA GA Laborer, Home Farm [b abt 1881] Beavers, Mrs Agnes Dau F W 29 Widow GA GA GA No Occupation [b abt 1890] Beavers, Lillian Grand Dau F W 5 Single GA GA GA No Occupation [b abt 1814] Note the change in birth state for Agnes. Next door to Joe's family is a George Beavers, age 48, born in Georgia. There are several more families named Beaver or Beavers on this page. Some with each name are variously born in North Carolina and some in Georgia. The Georgia Death Index records the death of a William Terry that appears to be our William Joseph: Georgia Deaths, 1919-98 Certificate 33914-J William Terry, Jr, Death 21 Jun 1928, Murray County An interesting thing about this record is that his name is recorded as William Terry, Jr. One Terry genealogy with good detail and apparent credibility does record the name of this person as William Joseph Terry, Jr, and his father, of course, as William Joseph Terry, Sr. However, the older William Terry's granddaughter, my grandmother Julia Virginia Terry Jenkins, records his name as William Barney Terry. She mentions nothing of an alternate name, or of Barney being a nickname. So my genealogy records the father of William Joseph Terry as William Barney Terry. In censuses the father of William Joseph Terry is always referred to only as William Terry, whereas the son is normally listed as William J. His son may have been referred to as William Jr, as in the Georgia Death record, simply because they both went by William Terry, without reference to any middle name. William Terry was born in Murray County, as part of a large Terry clan. His father was George C Terry, almost 60 when William was born, and his mother, only about 20 at his birth. His father died in January 1888, and he and his mother moved to Texas, as other Terrys had from the 1870s on. In 1898 William married Cora B Alexander. Texas, Marriage Collection, 1814-1909 and 1966-2011 Cora Alexander Marriage 8 Jun 1898 Erath County, Texas Spouse W. L. Terry In 1900, William and Cora are in Erath County, west of Fort Worth. They have moved farther west than others in their family except for Thomas L Terry, a son of Joseph Lewis and Dovina Terry. In 1900, Thomas L and his family is in San Angelo, in Tom Green County, even farther west, near Abilene. In 1880 Thomas and his family had been in Milam County, along with other Terrys of his family. Terrys from this same Murray County clan had moved to McLennan County (Waco area) and Milam County (county seat Cameron, near San Antonio) by 1880. Louisa is living with her son William L and his wife Cora, who have no children. William and Cora and William have been married 2 years. However, the report of North Carolina is also in error, according to family sources and previous censuses. He was born in South Carolina, as was Louisa. By the 1910 census William and Cora had moved to in Ryan City, Jefferson County, Oklahoma. Jefferson County was created out of the earlier Cherokee County, Oklahoma Territory. The birth states and ages of the children in the 1910 census tells us they moved across the Red River to Oklahoma Territory about 1905. Their daughter Mary was born in Texas about 1905 and Willis was born in Oklahoma Territory about 1906. She is living with their son William L and his wife Cora and their 3 children. The 1880 census reports William O as 5 years old, which means his birthday would have been in 1875 or even 1874. Yet his exact birth date is reported by Kaye Nicholson and Richard Bates as 7 January 1877. He should have been 3 in 1880. This is not the only date in these two genealogies that fails to match the reported ages in censuses. I comment on discrepancies in this matter for Grover Cleveland as well as Grover's wife Sarah in the notes for Sarah Addie Pendley. 1880 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 23 June, McDonald, District 155, page 29A (scan 482A), Hse #259, Fam #268 Terry, Cyrus L W M 34 Farming GA GA NC Terry, Emely J W F 28 Keeping House GA GA GA Terry, William O W M 5 Son GA GA GA [born ca 1875] In 1900 the 22-year-old Owen appears t be the child reported in 1880 as William O. 1900 Federal Census, Murray County, Georgia, 4 June, McDonald District, Enumeration District 71, page 5B, Hse #86, Fam #89 Terry, Cyrus L Head W M Jan 1847 53 Married 32 years GA NC NC Farmer Owns Terry, Emily Wife W F Apr 1862 48 Married 32 years borne 7 children, 7 living GA GA GA Terry, Owen Son W M Jun 1878 22 Single GA GA GA Farm Laborer In 1920, a William O Terry is reported as a boarder in Atlanta, Georgie, where he works as a Railroad Freight Clerk. This William is 44 years old, which puts birth at about 1876, matching the earlier reports. On the other hand, the 1930 census reports that William is 39 years old, which would yield a birth year of 1891! This is 16 years different from the 1880 census, and 14 years off from the genealogy date. In 1930, William is single and living with his single brother Cyrus L Jr. Their widowed mother is also living with them. Cyrus is reported as age 49, which would make his birth year about 1881. This also differs, of course, from the birth dates reported by Nicholson and Bates in their genealogies, 8 September 1882, but only by about a year. The younger brother of William Owen, Robert Lee Terry, is reported was 3 years old in 1880. This would yield a birth year matching the date of birth Nicholson and Bates give for William, January 1877! But there are two different conflicting dates of birth for Robert Lee from Nicholson and Bates. Bates reports the birth date of 13 January 1879, while Nicholson reports 13 January 1878. I find no notes explaining or citing sources in either of the genealogies. I have not found any independent sources to confirm these exact dates. There are two sets of death information for what appear to be this same William O Terry. The Georgia Death Index (certificate #9215) reports for Wm O Terry a date of 20 Mar 1940, with death occurring in Cobb County. Richard Bates reports 3 March 1940, with death in Murray County, Georgia. Bates may have used the place of residence at time of death. I have found other cases of official entries for death dates differing by a few days from the date reported by family sources. But it is possible the Georgia death registry I found is for another William O Terry that I have not yet identified. William's burial memorial on Find a Grave has a slightly different date of death, being 21 March 1940. The grave has 21 February. The certificate reports William's mother as Tabatha (Tabitha?), whose name I did not have for a wife for Joseph Terry, having only the name Dovina Walker for Joseph's wife and William's mother. Since this is William's middle name, Dovina appears to be his mother. Perhaps Tabitha was her other name. No previous sources I had seen had any name for her besides Dovina. I notice that the informant for William's death certificate was Rube Wells, a relative of his wife. Rube may not have known for certain about William's family. This clarifies that the place of burial was in "Wells Plot" (Wells Cemetery), Lee Station, an unincorporated place outside of Douglas, Cochise County, Arizona. Death occurred at home in Gleeson, Cochise, Arizona. The certificate is uncertain of the date of death. Family and the grave report date of death as 21 Feb 1919. His mother is reported as Tabatha (Tabitha?), supplementing our previous knowledge of her as Dovina Walker. Posted by Orville Boyd Jenkins 14 June 2013

This handed-down middle name of Walker in Connie's grandson and later descendants is good secondary evidence that her maiden name was Walker. This is a common naming pattern in many lineages. This William Walker also named his son Wlilliam Walker. William Walker Jr (Bil) contacted me about this name in his heritage. "My great grandfather was William Walker Terry, Iâm named after him. William Terry moved with the Wells family from Texas to Douglas AZ. You can find information regarding his side of the family at Wellsgazette.com. There is a family grave yard outside of Douglas. The father is named W L Terry, which matches Wilis Clay's father William L, and the mother's maiden name is Alexander, as it should be for Willis Clay Terry. He is reported as born in Oklahoma, which is correct. The birth date is in 1907, matching census ages for Willis that put his birth about 1906. But I cannot account for the middle initial L. It could be a clerical error in the original name of the deceased on the death certificate. But I have not seen a copy of the actual death certificate. This death record indicates that Willis died at age 21 of smallpox.
