Notes for James Frederick TINSLEY

Polly married James Tinsley, and they had two daughters. It is thought they
divorced but later remarried.

"They lived in St Charles when I knew them. They may have met in the service.
They divorced, I think. They had two girls. The oldest was Anna Ruth, but I
don't remember the other one's name,"

But there is one anomaly. Polly and James appear in three Little Rock city
directories, but the first one is in 1951. So it appears they were still
married in 1951, but divorced then remarried before the 1954 directory, in
which they also appear, then again in 1957, the year they divorced. A later
divorce in about April 1957 (after the 1957 city directory had been prepared)
is found however, posted on Ancestry by the same genealogist who posted the
1952 marriage record, "gilmonts." I have other couples in my genealogy who
were divorced and remarried more than once.

Notes for Elizabeth TIPTOFT

Elizabeth's birthplace is a famous seat of several prominent famlies of
England. Here is a brief introduction to Nettlestead: "NETTLESTEAD, a parish
in the hundred of Bosmere, county Suffolk, 2½ miles W. of Claydon railway
station, and 6 N.W. of Ipswich, its post town. The village, which is
inconsiderable, is wholly agricultural. The manor was formerly held by the
earls of Richmond, Peter de Savoy, the Tiptofts, Despencers, and Wentworths,
who had a seat here, and who took hence the title of baron. The tithes have
been commuted for a rent-charge of £193 10s. The living is a rectory in the
diocese of Norwich, value £192. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. It has a
brass of a knight in armour. The register dates from 1618. Nettlestead Hall
has an ancient gateway bearing the quarterings of the Wentworth family, to
whom it once belonged. The mansion has been modernised and new fronted." From

Notes for Millicent TIPTOFT

Millicent was the younger sister of Margaret Tiptoft, who married Richard Le
Scrope's older brother Roger, 2nd Lord Scrope of Bolton. Their parents were
Robert Tiptoft b 1341 and Margaret Diencourt b 1343. A couple of genealogies
report her as married to a John FASTOLF Castlecomb, Wiltshire, England. The
date of marriage is given as January 1409. This is after the death of her
husband Stephen Scrope in 1405. Interestingly, a daughter is reported of the
second marriage, with the name Alice Fastolf, born 1404! This is before the
death of Stephen, so if the dates are correct, Alice would appear to be the
child of Stephen Scrope, not of John Fastolfe. But one wonders why shoe would
have the surname of Fastolfe. I find it interesting that the genealogies I
have seen that report Millicent's husband as John Fastolf report no previous
marriage to Stephen Strope. Likewise the many genealogies of various lineages
that I have found reporting on this family list Stephen as her only husband.
More careful sources, such as the articel in Wikipedia, report the dual
marriage: "In 1408 he married Millicent, widow of Sir Stephen Scrope of Castle
Combe in Wiltshire" [many sources report the wedding was actually in January
1409] -- Wikipedia, "John Fastolf," http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Fastolf

similar genealogies report that her place of death was Caistor Castle in
Norfolk, a castle of John Fastolfe (Fastolf). Modern sources spell the name
Caister. ============================================= Caister Castle is one
of the four principal castles in Norfolk. It is built of brick, and is one of
the earliest edifices in England constructed of that material after its
rediscovery as suitable for building purposes. It stands with its strong
defences not far from the sea on the barren coast. It was built by Sir John
Fastolfe, who fought with great distinction in the French wars of Henry V and
Henry VI, and was the hero of the Battle of the Herrings in 1428, when he
defeated the French and succeeded in convoying a load of herrings in triumph
to the English camp before Orleans. -- "Caister Castle,"

Quanah and 5 of his wives were enumerated on the same page of the 1900 US
census of Oklahoma Territory. The enumerator has reported Quanah's and his
parents' birth state as Texas, yet for all the children Tope se up, Honnnie,
Laura and Kelsey, he has reported their father as born in Oklahoma Territory.
The 1900 census says Quanah and To-nar-cy have been married 24 years. Tis
would mean they married about 1876. But her reported birth year is 1865,
which would mean they married when she was about 11. He birth year was
probably earlier, but the age reported in 1905 and 1910 also makes birth about
1865.

Quanah's record reports this is his 2nd marriage. The 1900 census reports
that he had been married to Tonarcy 24 years, to Weck-e-ah 22 years. But
Cynthia Ann, the daughter of Weck-e-ah, is reported to be Quanah's first
child. I do not have a confirmed name for Tonarcy's one child. This 1910
census tells us her child has died.

Quanah died in 1911. In later censuses, the family group is still together.
In the 1911 census, page 20 reprots many of the Parker family units, including
Aer wuth takeum with her second husband. We see here the mixed usage of
English and Comanche names with individual family members.

Notes for TO-PAY

In the 1900 US census of Oklahoma Territory, To-pay was enumerated along with
4 other wives of Quanah Parker. Note that the father of her son Kelsy, as
well as the other two children in this list, is reported as born in Texas, but
Quanah was reported as born in Texas. Quanah is definitely their father, so
this is an enumerator error.

Cynthia Ann, the daughter of Weck-e-ah, is reported to be Quanah's first
child. I do not have a confirmed name for Tonarcy's one child. This 1910
census tells us her child has died.

The census reports that To-pay has had 4 children and 2 are living. We have
the name of Culberson born in 1904, but I have not discovered the name of the
other child who died.

Quanah died in 1911. In the census that year, several of his wives and
children show up in their own households. We see here the mixed usage of
English and Comanche names with individual family members.

Notes for Isabella Minor TODD

U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900
Isabella Minor Todd
Birth 1663 VA
Spouse John Madison
Birth 1663 VA
Marriage 1690 VA

The information reported in this Marriage record differs from the dates and
places of birth in genealogies. These generally report Isabella was born in
1670 in Gloucester County, Virginia, or in King and Queen County, Virginia.
An example is given below which contains rather full information, but as
typical, with no documentation of where they got the information.

Isabella Minor Todd
Birth 1670 in Toddsbury, Gloucester, Virginia
Death 1706 in St Stephens, King Queen, Virginia
Parents:
Thomas Todd 1619-1675
Anne Gorsuch 1638-1695
Marriage 1696 to John Madison in King and Queen County, Virginia
-- Tarlton,
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/292850/person/-1219607901?ssrc=&ftm=1

Mary Madison, their first daughter, is reported to have been born in 1895.
The marriage date proposed as 1696 must be an error. The 1690 date reported
in the US and International Marriage records collection fits the children's
birth dates.

Note the difference in native language reported in the Canadian census
(German) and the later US census (Dutch). Also the 1901 Canadian census
reprots that everyone in the famliy, including the two teenagers and
9-year-old Cornelius, were in the Canadian Army. The 1911 census also reports
them as German origin, but the language is not specifically reported in that
year. In 1916, they are designated again as Dutch.

The family took a trip to the US in 1907.

Border crossing information is reported for 1907 for the family from Canada
into the US, at the border post of St Albans, Vermont. They are reported in
the Canadian censuses of 1911 and 1916 after this date. That indicates this
crossing is for a visit, not for their immigration. We are told this occurred
in 1919, reported in the 1920 US census. This border crossing record reports
Abraham and Margarete's birth palce as Rosenthal, Russia. I cannot find any
information on this location.
