"My dad’s stepmother was Norah Whalin, sister of Eldon and Kermit. I
remember her talking of her famous family in Texas. My dad, Lester Reeves, is
now 96 and recently turned over to me the family photos and memorabilia. It
will take me months to go through it all, my intention being to get items to
people who would care about them most. Today I ran across articles related to
the Wills band, Whalin photos and a letter from Eldon and Odella, dated
9-13-61, in which they reference 'the drunken man who killed Carroll and
Cecil.'"

Although Mary's birth record, cited above, reports she was born in Prince

manager Donnie Ruyle says she was born in Baltimore County, Maryland. In
checking the history of counties and dates of creation, there seems to be no
connection of these two area. Similarly, the memorial reports that she died
in Wrightsboro, McDuffie County, Georgia, but no record has been found of
their residence there or a death record reported her death. She may have been
in a hospital in McDuffie County.

Notes for Ola Carter WHITAKER

Ola's name in Social Security records is Olie, but his name on his grave and
his Texas death record is Ola. One city directory spells the name Ollie,
which is the name he used in the name of his company in the 1947 directory, if
they printed it correctly. On some official records, the spelling Olie is
found, and I see that several genealogies also use this spelling.

His name is spelled Olie on his WWII draft registration and his Social
Security records. This made it seem like the proper one to use. But he had
signed the WWII card only with his initials, as O C Whitaker, leaving some
doubt. Then I found the WWI draft registration in which his actual signature
is Ola Whitaker. This is most likely the original given name. I have not
been able to find his birth record to confirm how his name was registered at
that time.

I will follow this as more definitive. The SS records tend also to use the
more formal names, though that is not totally consistent. Since SS in this
case has Ola that supports the earlier WWI record. The 1920, 1930 and 1940
censuses also report his name as Ola, meaning this is likely how he gave it to
them.

It is quite likely that he later did switch to use the more masculine Ollie,
as found on his business and office name reported in the City Directory. I
note that this information would have come direct form him, while the WWII
draft card is all typed, indicating it was entered by a clerk after Ollie
stated the name orally.

Notes for Amanda Elizabeth WHITE

The 1910 census reports Amanda is Jason's second wife, and they have been
married eight years. But in fact, Amanda is Jason's third wife. This Manda
is Amanda Elizabeth White, who had first married a Moore, as we see in the
1910 census from her children's names in the Forsyth household, even though
that census reports this is her first marriage.

The first wife was Emily Christian, and the second was Livonia Reed, whom
Jason married in 1898 after the death of Emily. Details about Emily's death
and burial are unknown.

Many genealogies identify Amanda as the same Emily Chirstian of the 1880
census, naming her Amanda Emily Christian. This is not supportable in light
of the records we have found.

We find Amanda or Mandy Elizabeth White in the 1910 and later censuses as the
wife of Jason Forsyth. Earlier records show uer as the wife of Frank M Moore,
then a widow in 1900 Infant twins of Frank and Mandy were buried in the Red
River Cemetery in Hooks, Bowie County, Texas, named Frank, after the father
and Charlotte. Records for this destroyed cemetery are in the the Texarkans
Genealogical Society archives.

Amanda married Frank M Moore in 1892.

F M Moore, Male
Manday E White
Marriage 10 Jan 1892 Red River, Texas, USA

We next find Amanda in the 1900 census as a widow under her first married name
Manda Moore in the 1900 census, in Red River County, Texas. Manda is a
boarder, with her two young children, in the Hubbard home. Her daughters
Audra and Ora are reported as 6 and 5 years old, respectively.

Researcher Lynda Soape Lewis discovered Amanda's name as Amanda White, from
her death record. We had not found a record with this surname, but the other
information about Amanda's marriage to Frank M Moore matches the information
we had found earlier concerning Amanda's first marriage. But we had not found
that marriage record or Ora Moore Goodman's death certificate reporting the
name of her father.

"I found Jason married to a Amanda "Mandy" Elizabeth White Moore in 1910. She
had two children by a previous marriage, Audry Love Moore & Ola Esther Moore.
Both children were listed as Jason' daughters. However, in the 1900 Census,
Amanda Moore was a widow with the same two children. Also, I found their
father to be Frank M Moore as stated on Ora Ester Moore Goodman's death
certificate."
-- Lynda Soape Lewis, Find a Grave Message to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 10 March
2020

The two daughters reported with Manda Moore in the 1900 census are now in the
household of their stepfather Jason Forsyth.

Note that the 1910 census reports that this is Jason's second marriage, but in
fact Amanda White is his third wife. The census reports they have been
married for 8 years, meaning they married in about 1902. This must mean that
Lavonia Reed died after only about 4 years of marriage.

In most records, her name is spelled with a C. The name on her grave is
Katherine.

"I have copies of the marriage license of James C. Edmonds and Catherine White

Note that in this 1870 census, Catherine is reported born in North Carolina,
whereas the 1860 census says it was Kentucky. The 1880 census says she and
both her parents were born in North Carolina. Later censuses and her North
Carolina death certificate report she was born in Kentucky.

Note that William is reported born in North Carolina, although the family was
living in Jefferson County, Tennessee at the time he was born. Likewise
Martha, reported here under her middle name Marcena. However, born between
them was Elijah, and here he is reported born in Tennessee, as were all three
in 1870. Two younger children are reported born in North Carolina.
Catherine's mother Polly White is living in the household.

With some varying reporting, it would at first appear to be thoughtful, and
thus probably accurate. But the birthplace of the three oldest certainly was
Tennessee.

The birth of the two younger children might indicate that the family moved to
North Carolina about 1865, and that James died there. The discrepancies in
the birth states of the older children makes that report less reliable. Family
sources report that James died in Jefferson County, Tennessee. There is also
a story that Catherine walked to North Carolina with the children to because
the government (county? state?) was going to take the children away from her.
Perhaps they were in a state of destitution after James' death, and the county
was threatening to take the children form Catherine.

Living next door is John Reed (Reid) and his wife Parthena. John is 70.
After the death of Parthena, Catherine will marry John.

I have not found a census record for Catherine in 1910. She is not in the

enumerated in William's home, with her 2nd married name Reed. Note that
William's mother-in-law is also in the household, giving us Mary Ellen's
maiden name of Thomas.

Katherine Reed
Birth 1835 Kentucky
Death 31 Dec 1930 Faust, Madison County, North Carolina
Widow of John Reed
Occupation Housewife
Name of Father White, born Kentucky
Name and Birthplace of Mother unknown
Informant Ellen Edmonds, Flag Pond, Tenn, Rt 2
Burial 1 Jan 1931 Boone Cemetery], Flag Pond, Tenn
[Boone Cemetery is southeast in Yancey County, it actually was at the Divide,
or Sams Gap, Cemetery, address Flag Pond, Unicoi, Tennessee, on the border.]

The informant on Catherine's Death Certificate appears to be Mary Ellen
Thomas, the wife of Catherine's son William Edmonds, with whom she had been
living for some time.

Note that the death certificate records the intended place of burial as Boone
Cemetery. The only Boone Cemetery I can find reference to is southeast of
there in Burnsville, Yancey County. There are several references to her
burial on the state line. Shirley, an Edmonds researcher I have worked with
on the Edmonds-Strange lines, has been onsite and recorded her grave side by
side with that of her mother Polly White. Polly is buried on the Tennessee
side of the border and Catherine is on the North Carolina side. So this has
to be some cemetery other than the Boone Cemetery in Burnsville.

One genealogy makes reference to "Divide Cemetery" in Sam's Gap, North
Carolina. But for its source documentation, this genealogy links to the North
Carolina Death Index and Katherine's birth certificate. The former reports
nothing related to a cemetery, and the birth certificate reports burial as in
Boone Cemetery (and seems to indicate Flag Pond as the location). This is
just south of Flag Pond and near the border. With this clue for Divide
Cemetery I was able to find an online listing for that cemetery.

The page header places the formal address of this in Flag Pond, Unicoi,
Tennessee: "Divide Cemetery of Sams Gap, TN-NC Border, Unicoi County,
Tennessee." The online listing or the cemetery places it thus:

"The Divide Cemetery [also known as State Line or Sam's Creek Cemetery] is
located off Rt. 23W at Sams Gap at the NC-TN border, about 5 miles south of
Flag Pond, TN. From the town of Erwin, take I-26 towards Asheville, NC and
exit Temple Hill Road. This is old US Highway 19-23W which splits at
Ernestville, TN. Continue straight on US 23W heading east towards Flag Pond
for about 20 minutes. The cemetery is about 150 feet off US Hwy 23W. "
-- Divide Cemetery Listing,
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tnunicoi/dividecemetery/Dividecemetery23W.html

The online listing has this entry for Catherine, spelled Katherine, next to
her mother. Note that it also comments, from some unstated source, that her
husband (Cam Edmonds) died about 1876. This may be based on the report in
Thomas Edmonds' birth certificate that John Reed was his father, and the
census reports of his birth around 1876-1877 (though his death certificate
gives an alternative birth date in 1872, possibly due to a misreading of info,
when it was typed in).

Note that the enumerator reported Elzie as a daughter and female. A note from
a descendant reports an error on the 1900 census. Note that the census
reports Elzie as a Daughter and Female. The descendant reports that Elzie is,
in fact, male.

"I just wanted to comment on Elzie which is listed as a female and he is in
fact a male (born 1881) as he was my grandmother's father. I have his death
certificate listing Cyntha Green as his mother and George T. as father. Your
explanation helps greatly as this has been my brick wall."
-- Comment on Elzie White on Ancestry genealogy, smileytex1, 12 May 2013

Also note that the middle initial in the 1900 census record is N, while some
family sources, with no documentation cited, report his middle name was
Hampton, as reflected in the following genealogy report for him. Also the
census date of birth is 2 years earlier in the census from that reported in
this genealogy. His age was reported on his marriage record in January 1904
as 22. With birth in April (age 22 in April 1903), this would match birth in
1881, matching neither the census nor the genealogy. His later WWI
registration reports the birth date as 5 April 1882.

Elzie's residence at the time of marriage was Reagan, Chickasaw Nation, Indian
Territory, which appears in records for his parents. She was living in Ravia.
They were living in Ravia when they were enumerated in the 1910 census, with
their son George R White. The census reports that they had a previous child
who did not live.

In 1918 on his WWI registration Elzie Hampton reported his father as George
Robert White. The identification of the Elzie White in the 1900 census may be
wrong. Or the name of the head of household there may be George R White
instead of George T White as reported by the enumerator. However, all other
records correlate with the name George T or George Thomas White.

His son was named George Robert, but he would have been only about 10 in 1918.
So it does not seem so likely that Elzie would have reported him as the
contact person. Later indications that Elzie was illiterate may account for
this variation (see below in WWII record). The clerk was probably sloppy is
writing what he was told.

His WWI registration reports that Elzie lived in Marshall County, Oklahoma.
The residence place is reported as Linn, which does not appear on the list of
towns in the county. But the location does appear on a 1909 map of the
county. It is in the northeast corner of the county.

There are some interesting dynamics going on with Elzie's middle name. He is
usually reported with the middle initial H, though the 1900 enumerator somehow
got it as Elzie N. (And also reported Elzie as a daughter and female.)
Genealogies that have his full name have the middle name as Hampton. His name
in the WWI registration was Elzie Hampton White. But in his WWII
registration, it is Elzie Henry White. Note also that the WWII card is typed,
not handwritten, so the clerk may have made an error.

The signature on this card makes it clear that Elzie could not read or write.
He signed this card with a Mark of what looks like the initial E. This may
account for the variation in his name. The clerks likely did not persist to
clarify and confirm his full name as they wrote it.
