Notes

• Several genealogies report that Arlo Halvorson was born in Armenia.  This was puzzling, since Halvorson is obviously a Norse name.  When I found  the 1930 census, I was able to confirm this was just a silly error.  The census reports he was born in Iowa.  His father's birthplace is reprotred Unknown, but his mother was born in Norway, as expected.

  Arlo and his family have not been found in the 1940 census.  Later after has was married, Arlo appeared in the Mason City City Directory in several editions up to 1960.  In all these directories, his wife is reported as Evelyn E.  They married some time after 1947, when he is reported as single.

  By 1950, Arlo married and his wife Joan M was reported in the 1950 City Directory.  Joan's last name wa also Halvorson.  It is not clear how they might be kin.  Her paents were reproted as Reuben Halvorson and Cecilia Pfeifer

  By 1956, Arlo's wife is reproted in teh directory as Evelyn, thought to be Evelyn Denbow.

  But some time after 1960 he married Arlene LaVonne Cheesman Briscoe, who had also divorced her husband Bernard Briscoe some time after the same 1960 city directory in Mason City.

  Arlo "Dean" Halvorson, 84, of Mason City, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania with Pastor Ed Bard, Hospice Chaplain officiating. Private family interment will be in the Rockwell Cemetery. Visitation will be held 4:00 - 6:00 P.M. Friday, January 25, 2013 at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Arlo "Dean" Halvorson memorial fund in care of the family.
