Notes

  • "Joseph Benjamin Christian, Jr. and his wife Catherine [Smith] are buried in the Ashland Cemetery in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma. The Findagrave website has a photo of their headstone and biographies. My mother, Barbara Lucille Battles (1920), was Mineola Christian Battles' daughter and before she passed in 2014 she was able to recall her grandfather's name as 'Joe B.'"

Lucille was reported in the 1930 census with her parents and several siblings at the age of 3.  The family was living in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma, where Lucille's paretns were married.  They are in the Kiowa Township.  Lucille and her father George, and all her siblings are reported as Indians, while her mother Minnie Christian is reported as White.

In the 1940 census, we find the family is now living in Stephens County (Marlow-Duncan area).  All the Battles family members were reported in that census as White, while in 1930 they had been Indian.  We find this with many Indian families in the Chickasaw, Choctaw and Creek Nations.  They gradually became part of the general population stream as "White."
