He signed his name as Anscel Green.  Family references usually have Ancil.  Some records have Ansel.

Ancil married a third time after the death of Frances Chastain Champion. His third wife was Winny Louise Brown, whom he married in 1854 in Cass County, Georgia.  Her name in her marriage record was Winny Brown.  Her proper firstname was probably Winnifred.

Cass County was created in 1832 out of lands taken from the Cherokee people.  In 1861 Cass County was renamed to Bartow County, in honor of Francis S. Bartow, because of General Lewis Cass' support for the Union in the Civil War.

    ----------------
    History

Bartow County was created from the Cherokee lands of the Cherokee County territory on December 3, 1832, and named Cass County, after General Lewis Cass (1782-1866) Secretary of War under President Andrew Jackson, Minister to France and Secretary of State under President James Buchanan, who was instrumental in the removal of Native Americans from the area.

However, the county was renamed on December 6, 1861 in honor of Francis S. Bartow because of Cass's support of the Union, even though Bartow never visited in the county, living 200 miles away near Savannah all of his life.

Cass had supported the doctrine of popular sovereignty, the right of each state to determine its own laws independently of the Federal government, ironically the platform of conservative Southerners who removed his name.  The first county seat was at Cassville, but after the burning of the county courthouse and the Sherman Occupation, the seat moved to Cartersville, where it remains.

The county was profoundly affected by the Civil War, setting it back economically for many decades.  May 18 and 19, 1864, General George Henry Thomas led the Army of the Cumberland after General William J. Hardee's Corps of the Army of Tennessee, and General James B. McPherson led his Federal Army of the Tennessee flanking Hardee's army to the west.  This huge army was disruptive and sought food. Elements were out of control and sacked homes, depleting meager supplies.

Property destruction and the deaths of one-third of the county's soldiers during the war caused financial and social calamity for many.

In the 1860 census he has a 40-year-old woman and three children, ages from 16 years to 3 months.  See also the notes on the 1880 census.  Ancil's age of 64 would make his birth about 1796, but other records indicate he was born about 1786.  This would mean he was 74 years old. His 1870 age of 83 is close to this, yielding a birth date in about 1787.

Ancil's ages in censuses vary, indicating birth years from 1786 to 1796.  No two censuses are the same.  The enumerations of 1870 inform us that Elizabeth J Green's middle name is Jane.

In 1880, Ancil is in the home of William who was age 4 in the 1860 census.  William's birth states record reports that both his parents were born in South Carolina, matching Ancil and Winney in 1860.  It appears at first that Ancil is again widowed.  He is reported Married, though no wife is reported in the record.  However, information on his wife Winnie indicates she did not die until 1913.

Then again we note that Ancil is reported as a visitor.  So he is not a regular member of William's household.

These two records for Ancil in the 1880 census are a good example of the lack of absolute focus on dates and ages in that era.  In his census report with Winny in their home area of Allaculsey (Alaculsa), Ancil is 93.  Just a month before when he was visiting his son, he reported his age as 91.

A Jones family is next door that appears to be the married brother of Jonas.

One Green genealogy has Abner among other children of Ancil and Fannie.  This genealogy also identifies Fannie as a Native American, though not what nation.  It does this by actually including the phrase "Native American" in her name.
