Notes

  • 1850 Federal Census, Greenville County, South Carolina, 16 September, page 745 (scan 375), Hse/Fam #846
    Elizabeth Few 49 F $1500 Real Estate b South Carolina [b abt 1801]
    William Few 22 M Laborer b South Carolina [b abt 1828]
    Mahala Few 19 F b South Carolina [b abt 1831]
    Catlett Few 18 M Laborer b South Carolina [b abt 1832]
    Matilda Few 16 F b South Carolina [b abt 1834]
    Benjamin Few 14 F b South Carolina [b abt 1836]

In the 1860 census, the daughter enumerated as Mahuldah matches the entry for Mahala in 1850.  Catlett is missing from the list in 1860.  All three adult children are still unmarried in this census.

1860 Federal Census, Greenville County, South Carolina, 23 August, Milford Division, P O Milford, page 83, Hse #672, Fam #591
Elizabeth Jenkins 59 F Housekeeper $3000 Real Estate $6225 Personal Estate born South Carolina [b abt 1801]
Mahuldah Jenkins 30 F Seamstress born South Carolina [b abt 1830]
Matilda Jenkins 27 F Weaver born South Carolina [b abt 1833]
Benjamin Jenkins 25 M Carpenter born South Carolina [b abt 1835]

In 1870, only two children are reported in Elizabeth's household, both daughters.  Their names are reported only as initials.  They would seem to match the two daughters who appear in each other census, Mahala or Mahuldah the older, and Matilda the younger.  Ages are off a little, but we see ages vary a good bit for the children, although Elizabeth's matches birth in 1801 every time.  Thus S M would match Mahala/Mahuldah and M C would then be Matilda.  The new initial C is clarified in the 1800 census, where the child named Caroline there matches Matilda.

    Jenkins, S M 35 F W At Home born SC [b abt 1835]
    Jenkins, M C 33 At Home born F W born SC [b abt 1837]

Elizabeth's son Benjamin is now married and enumerated in his own household next door.

A few doors away in the other direction is her older son I K, Ignatius Katlett Jenkins.

In the 1880 census, Mahaley is obviously the person reported as Mahala in 1850, as Mahuldah in 1860 and as S M in 1870.  Caroline matches the person reported twice as Matilda and in 1870 as M C.
