- There are two William Brooks who were killed in the Civil War in Virginia, one in 1864 and the other in 1861. The birth date is not known for either of them. The one in 1864 appears to be the husband of Evelina Gregory and father of William Gregory Brookes (as the name is spelled on his gravestone). This William Brooks died in Winchester County, Virginia, while the one who died in 1861 is buried in Augusta, Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley, in western Virginia.
