  When John registered for the World War I draft, he spelled his name and singed is as John Alvest Gregory.  His death record spells it Alvis.  The only other record I have seen that has his full middle name is his memorial on Find a Grave, which appears to follow his death certificate in spelling it Alvis.  I would think his own spelling might represent the original family spelling.  No birth record has been found.
