Billie Jones, a Jenkins-Burrell researcher with whom we have worked on some of this Jenkins lineage, reports this person born in 1843 as a son of Samuel Jenkins and Sarah Catherine <last name unknown> as Samuel Joseph Jenkins.  However, these parents had an earlier son born in 1818 named Samuel Joseph Jenkins.  The younger Joseph Jenkisn was reported in the 1850 census in the household of his father samuel Jenkins as Joseph Jenkins age 7.  This Joseph seems to be a second son, born 25 years later and known only as Joseph.  It was fairly common for the same family to have two children with the same or similar names born great distances apart.

Some sources report a Samuel Joseph Jenkins reported in some sources for this family, reported born in about 1842, married to a Sarah, who was reported together in the 1970 census, so that could not be either of these two sons of Samuel and Sara Catherine, who were both reported to have died in the Civil War.  Both Samuel Joseph (born 1818) and Joseph (born 1943) were enlisted in the 44th Mississippi Regiment.  Samuel Joseph was reported to have died 17 August 1862 and Joseph 14 August 1862.  These dates of death could be different transcriptions of information, or mistranscriptions, but birth dates are not compatible.
