James & Salina Wilson Lovin Grave Marker, Old Reid/Reed Cemetery, Murphy, Cherokee, North Carolina
James - Wife Salina Wilson Lovin
First Union man killed in Cherokee Co
    October 13, 1863 by a Confederate Home
Guard, He was a custom blacksmith
    and Stone Mason, building himself
the first brick house in the co, and
    the sawed soapstone chimney at
    the Buck Colvard place, Tomotla
Siding, he was the father of Sam, Joe,
Will Lovin Graham Co.  His oldest
son John died in the Union Army.
--  Transcribed as is, except that the stone is carved in all caps

The grave marker states that James was killed in Cherokee County, but the Find a Grave memorial reports his place of death as Burke County, North Carolina.  The memorial may have meant James was the first Union man from Cherokee County who was killed in the war, rather than that he was the first one killed in Cherokee County, as the wording indicates.  I have not found the army records.  For now I am following the death place reported by Find a Grave.

This marker does not mention the son James Wesley Lovin, whose family information led to James and Salina.
