Thomas Earl Jones died at the age of 24 in what appeared to be a drowning, though his boating companion Glen Horton was stabbed to death. A newspaper (unidentified in clipping I read) reports that his body was found in Hurricane Bayou of the White River Chute of the Arkansas River near Ethel, Arkansas County, Arkansas. Thomas Earl was buried in a family cemetery in Ethel, according to the newspaper story.
Here is a short exerpt of the story:
"The body of Thomas Earl Jones, 24, was found in the White River Chute last Friday about three quarters of a mile below the head of Hurricane Bayou. ... No marks of violence could be detected on the body, which was thoroughly examined by a coroner's jury. ...The Jones boy was buried Friday night in a family cemetery near Ethel."
This story says the body was found on Friday and buried that night. I thought that was a short time to get the body out of the river, get it into town, perform the autopsy, have the coroner's inquest, and finish the legal investigation the same calendar day. However, I found that the Arkansas Death Index reports his date of death as 22 January 1938. This date was a Saturday. Here is the official date of death from the Arkansas Death Index.
