Notes

  • Some genealogies report that Meshack Lowery was born in Northern Ireland.  But siblings born before him and after him were born in the Carolinas.  It is conceivable his mother was back in Ireland at the time of his birth.  But it seems likely that this report confuses two different individuals named Meshack Lowery.

Some genealogies also report that his mother Polly Wilkie Lowery died in Ireland.  If so, she was back in the home country for some reason at the time of her death.  I have seen no evidence of either Meshack's birth or Polly's death in Ireland.  Only entries in undocumented genealogies that are also questionable on other grounds.

Meshach Lowery is buried in the Wilson Family Cemetery. Directions: Starting at the courthouse in Monticello, Georgia, go north on Georgia Highway 11. About 1/2 mile, Highway 229 splits off.  Take 229 going north, for about 3.5 miles. You will pass over 3 creeks on the way.  Pull off road to the right. There is a small place to pull off and it is opposite a steel gate on the other side of the highway.  Look up a slight rise to the right, go 55 paces.  Grave markers are in a wooded area.

Tombstone is about 18 inches high, and reads "ELDER M. LOWRY, Born Sep 9, 1774, Died Dec 29, 1848".

Another researcher had copied it "1845" in error.

There is a record of daughter Susan Lowery Green, her husband and her sister Cynthia selling Susan's part of the land from her father.
