His memorial on Find a Grave reports that his middle nmae was Alonzo. This informs us where the middle initial L comes form. The commonshort form form of Alonzo is Lonzo, explaining the L. The memorial further reprots the nickname Lon, shortened form Lonzo.

Given also the naem sof siblings he provides, by this he must mean family tradition or sources, since he could not possible have been living at the time Lon was lving and maybe not even when he died.

Joseph was frequently referred to as J. Lon Briscoe. His wife, Ruth Etta Short was a descendant of Isaac Briscoe, who is thought to be related to James W. Briscoe and Thomas Briscoe.
From the Walters Herald obituary:
"Etta Ruth Briscoe, of north of Frederick, died June 13. She was born Mar. 17, 1894 in Forney, Tex. in 1901 she moved to Tillman County. She married J. L. Briscoe on Mar.17, 1917 in Wichita Falls. He died 25 Oct 1947. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, Eastern Star, and the Trinity Baptist Church in Frederick. She is survived by a son, J. L. Jr. of Frederick, a daughter, Mrs. Kendall Wallace of Jackosonville, Arkansas, a brother, Dewey Short of Okla. City, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Attending the funeral services at Trinity Baptist Church in Frederick of their aunt, were Mr. and Mrs. Earl Norman, Mrs. Lora Reece, Mr. and Mrs W. W. Briscoe, Mr. and Mrs. Don Briscoe, and Mrs. Fred Lambert, all of Walters. Burial was in the Frederick cemetery."
