Notes

  • Mary E Leverett was enumerated with her family in the 1850 census in Arkansas County, Arkansas, at the age of 5.  She wsa the last child, and born in Arkansas.  Her older brother Henry had been born in Tennessee about 1960, according to this enumeration.

But interestingly, the oldest child in the household, Lewis at age 19, was also born in Arkansas.  It suggests that they lived in Arkansas near emphis for a while, then moved across theborder into the state of Tennessee for sometime, then moved back to Arkansas.  It is not know when they actually moved down to the Ethel-St Charles area along the White River.

The following 1860 census record is linked by Jerry Griffitts as Mary E Smith, later the wife of William Jones, and mother of William Thomas Jones.

    William Jones
    Birth 1808 in Virginia
Death Dec 1860 in Prairie Township, Arkansas, Arkansas
Spouse Nancy [Last name unknown] b 1813
    Spouse Mary Jane Granbery 1826-1887
    Spouse Mary E Jones b 1843
    --  Jerry Griffitt, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/3144262/person/-858507754

Note that Jerry actually lists her as Mary E Jones, which might mean he had listed her under her married name (from marriage to William).  He does not list any parents for her, so there is no clear family link.

The listing under the name Jones may mean this was also her maiden name before she married Benz E Smith (a Prussian actually named Schmidt).  Smith seems to be her first married name.

Griffitt lists another wife between Nancy, who appears in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, and Mary, William's wife in the in the 1870 and 1880 censuses.  Griffitt reports two wives named Mary.  One is Mary E Jones.  This matches Mary E Smith (Schmidt), reported i the 1870 census.  In some genealogies, Benz Smith is reported as Benz Schmidt, the German form of his last name.  This also matches the demographic of the St Charles area, where other German families lived.  Notably the Mueller family, known there as Miller.

On the other wife, Mary Jane Granbery, I can find no information and cannot see where she could have been married to William in the timeline of records we have.  The 1850 census reports William's wife as Nancy, and the first child born about 1835.  Note that Griffitt's genealogy above reports Mary Granbery did not died until 1887.  If he is correct, then she and William were divorced before 1868, the approximate date when William married Mary Emily Smith.

Maybe Mary Jany Granbery was the first wife married before 1835 and died before 1850.  William might have also married her between the death of Nancy after abt 1865 and his marriage to Mary Smith about 1868.  I have found no marriage records for William.

Additionally, note also that even though Griffitt has this Mary E Smith married to William Jones, he reports William Jones as dying in 1860.  This is before the birth of William Thomas Jones in 1875, who is supposedly the son of Mary and William Jones.

In 1870, we find Mary has remarried and is now the wife of 61-year-old William Foote Jones.  Their first child is named Foote, and was born in November 1869, so we can figure they married in late 1868 or early 1869.

    Jones, Foote 7mos M W born Arkansas November 1869

From the 1880 census, we know that Mary had one son, Henry Smith, with her first husband.  But he is not reported in this 1870 census.  He does appear with the family in the 1880 census.

    Henry Smith 14 M W Step-Son On Farm AR Prussia AR (b abt 1866)
Foote Jones 10 M W Son On Farm AR VA AR (b abt 1870)

The age of Henry reported here indicates Henry Smith was born about 1876.  This means Mary and Benz Smith were probably married about 1865.  Foote Jones is already 10 years old in 1880, and the 1870 census tells us more exactly he was born in the November 1869.  This would mean that the widowed Mary married William Jones in late 1868 or early 1869.  We can figure, then, that Benz Smith died about 1868.

In the 1900 census, Mary is a widow living in the household of her son William Thomas, recorded as Thomas, and his wife Mary Cochran.

    Mary Emily Leverett Jones
    Birth Apr 1842 Arkansas, USA
Death unknown Ethel, Arkansas County, Arkansas, USA
Burial Rowland Family Cemetery, Ethel, Arkansas County, Arkansas, USA

Mary Emily Leverett was the daughter of Ebenezer W Leverett and his wife Elizabeth, whose maiden name is not known. Ebenezer was from an old family in Massachusetts, but had moved to Kentucky where he and Elizabeth married. The Leverett family had moved from Kentucky to Arkansas with a residence period in Tennessee .

Mary Emily was born in Arkansas and married a Germany Immigrant named Benz E Schmidt, who went by the English form of his name, as many did. They had married in Arkansas County and were enumerated as newlyweds in Prairie Township of the county, near the community of Ethel, in the 1850 census.

Because of Mary's remarriage to William Foote Jones, Mary and her son Henry are buried in the cemetery of the Rowland-Jones farm in Ethel, Arkansas. This private cemetery does not have headstones but the graves were marked only by natural stones. The burial site of Benz Smith is unknown.

Mary's death date is not known. The last record found for her was the 1910 census.

    Son Henry E Smith 1866 - unknown
