    Death Feb. 25, 1873 Madison County, Iowa

    William W. Shoemaker was 18, and living in Winterset, Madison Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co H of the 23rd Iowa Infantry on July 26, 1862. He was mustered into federal service on Aug 29, 1862.

    He was wounded severely on May 17, 1863, during fighting at Black River Bridge, Mississippi.

    He mustered out of the service on July 26, 1865, at Harrisburg, Texas.

    His wife filed for her widow's petition on Sept 6, 1878. Her application is #239,080, and her certificate #233,927. A minor child also filed on application #345,687, and certificate #233,926.
