Notes

  • It is uncertain exactly how old the child Henry was when he died.  He is known by name from an entry in a family Bible, and his grave has been located in what is now Mitchell farm, near Dalton, in Cass County, Texas, where the Jenkins and Christian families lived.

The gravestone dates are not fully readable, due to damage to the headstone.  Family tradition suggests Henry was born in 1876, matching the readable year of 1876 on the stone.  The day of birth was the 4th, but the month is missing.  Henry he never appears in a census.  Thus he would have been only about 4 years old at most when he died.  He died some time before the June 1880 census.

"A small grave with an old handmade sandstone marker bearing the inscription  “(?). H. Jenkins / Born - 4, 1876 / Died --”  is located in a small grove of trees and crepe myrtle about 350 yards northwest of the farm home occupied by Mrs. J. C. Mitchell (between Bryans Mill and Dalton). One of the Jenkins families was reported to have lived on this farm in the late 1800s."
