Notes

  • Some early lists of children of Daniel (Daniel John) and M (maybe Mary) Green listed one son named William Bryant Green.  I seems clear, now, with added information and more records now available and compared, that this was a misunderstanding of Fannie Green's husband, William Bryant.  Fannie was a daughter of Daniel John and M (maybe Mary) Green.  They had a son named William Bryant Green.

An early genealogy reporting a list of the children stated that all the children received $77 as settlement of estate of Daniel Green according to Court records dated 8 Apr 1859, Hall County, Georgia.  This statement was found in an old genealogy that had the children of Daniel and Mary Green, with just this statement in the notes for most of the children.

This is probably the reason William Bryant was mistaken as the first two names of a child of Daniel and Mary.  One of the children was named as William Bryant Green.

We know now that this William Bryant was not William Bryant Green, but the husband of Daniel's daughter Fannie, William Bryant.  This was confirmed for me when I received a message from a descendant of Fannie giving some family details, including the identification of Fannie Green Bryant's son as Hardy Bryant.

Other families reporting this family and the Bryant connection also report that Fannie's husband was one William Bryant.  This is supported by the 1850 and 1860 censuses, on which family researchers have commented on Ancestry.com, further strengthening the identification.  In the 1860 census, next door to William and Fanny is Hardy Bryant and his wife Winney G.  This Hardy Bryant is age 26, matching a son of William.  He also had a brother name William Bryant.

At this age Hardy would be the oldest child on this census.  This matches the 1850 census, which reported all the children only by their initial.  The oldest child then was H Bryant, age 16.  In 1860, the oldest child still in William and Fanny's household is 22-year-old John.

Information is included here on William B Green and Martha Burch.

There has been also some confusion on the generational succession in this lineage.  It may be that Martha Burch had been connected as the wife of William Bryant Green (son of Daniel John Green) who was born in about 1815, and she actually married his son of the same name, who was closer to her own age.  Martha was born in 1832.

Georgia, Marriage Records From Select Counties, 1828-1978
    William B Green Jr
Marriage 8 Jun 1857 Richmond, Georgia
    Spouse Martha Burch

But this marriage is too late for this Martha Burch to be the Martha E reported as the wife of William B Green in McBean, Georgia in the 1960 census.

In his marriage record transcription, found only in 2015, William is named William B Green Jr.  This is a surprise, since in our family line, his father is Daniel also called Daniel John Green.  This created some doubt as to the correctness of this identification with Martha Burke.

In 1860 a William B Green is enumerated in Richmond County, Georgia.  This may be one source of confusion about the son of Daniel John Green.  As information developed over the years, it appears likely this identification is incorrect.  No further location or details can be found, however, that match any son of Daniel John Green to match this William Green.

1860 Federal Census, Richmond County, Georgia, 8 October, 124th District, PO McBean, page 979, Hse #2237, Fam # 2164
    William B Green 45 M Farmer $5000 Real Estate  $10,000 Personal  born Georgia [b abt 1815]
Martha E Green 18 (28?) F born Georgia [age has been overwritten, b abt 1832?]
    John D Green 16 (?) M born Georgia [b abt 1844]
    Joseph E Green 2 M born Georgia [b abt 1858]

The age for Martha has been overwritten.  It appears possibly 21 overwritten with 18.  Ancestry interprets her age as 28.  Martha may be the wife of William.  But even if she is 28, she is not the mother of John D at age 16.  His age has also been overwritten, and appears to be 16.  These entries may represent three children of William and a deceased spouse.  I have found no earlier marriage for William, to account for the mother of John D Green reported in the 1860 census.

A genealogy for the Gardner family gives us Martha's maiden name of Burch.   This genealogy, and others with the same family configuration, do report the wide difference in age between William and Martha.

    William Bryant Green
    Birth 1815 in Georgia
    Parents  Daniel John Green 1781-1857, M 1781-1850
Spouse Martha E. Burch, Birth 1832 in Georgia, Death UNKNOWN in Augusta, Columbia, Georgia
    Sons John D. Green 1845, Joseph E. Green 1858-1922

As further information became available, by 2015 it was looking like this was a different configuration.  One genealogy with very little information provided a clearer family configuration.

    William B Green
Birth 1795 in Harlem Richmond Co GA, Death Unknown
    Spouse Unknown
    Daughter  Ann Green No dates
    Son William B Jr Green
Birth abt 1822 in Augusta Richmond Ga, Death Unknown
Marriage 2 Feb 1842 Richmond, Georgia
Martha E Burch, Birth 21 Oct 1831 in Augusta GA, Death 9 Dec 1861 in Augusta GA
    --  Murphy Family Tree, http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/7477070/person/-1085105167

The same two sons are reported by the Murphy genealogy as found in the above Gardner tree.

This does report a father for Martha Burch's husband who is named William B Green.  Several genealogies have William B Green Jr and his spouse Martha Burch.  Most have no father, or like this one have his father as William B, as we might expect from the designation Jr.  Nowhere, however, have I found what the initial B stands for.

So either the original information was wrong, and
    (1) William Bryant Green is not correct as a son of Daniel John Green, son of Meshack
    (2) There is a son named William Bryant Green, but he is a different person from Martha Burch's husband, and no further information is available for him.

Further, Richmond County, Virginia, where William B and Martha Burch were married, and now where the Murphy Tree tells us his father lived, is not close to Hall County, Georgia, with which our line of Greens is associated.
