Notes

  • His nickname was Press.  Even as a 1-year-old he was registered officially as Press Clifton Gay.

U.S., Native American Enrollment Cards for the Five Civilized Tribes, 1898-1914, 25 Sep 1902, Choctaw By Blood
Dawes #14475 Gay, Press Clifton  Age 1 Male 1/32 blood Census Card #86 [b abt 1901]

Note that the date of birth on his gravestone is wrong, since we know he was already one year old when he was registered as a citizen of the Choctaw Nation in September 1902.  His birth year would have been 1901, not 1903.  The day of birth is probably correct.  At some point, the date got shifted by two years in family memory and that was reported for his death record information.

The 1910 and 1920 censuses report ages that are consistent with Press being born in 1903.  Since we know he was registered in the 1902 Choctaw roll, his parents must have reported his age wrong.
