  One or more genealogies reported the day of death as 12 February.  With this info I was able to find a record confirming the date.  The North Carolina death record also gives us the place of death.

  This death reports says his place of residence was Beaufort County, South Carolina, but Social Security records report last residence as Clover, York County, South Carolina.  The Beaufort County location does not make sense.  This is in the very southern tip of South Carolina.  No other information places James that far south.
