Notes

  • 1860 Federal Census, Itawamba County, Mississippi, 20 June, PO Gun Town, page 1 (scan 219), Hse/Fam #2
Barnett, John 36 M Farmer  $200 real $1125 personal  Georgia [born abt 1824]
Barnett, Minerva 38 F South Carolina [born abt 1822]
Barnett, Manday [Mandy] 1 M Mississippi [born abt 1859]

In 1860 Mandy is the youngest in the household.  I have found some genealogies lack this child, perhaps combining her with Susan, whom they name Susan Amanda.  But both Susan and Amanda appear under those names in the 1870 enumeration for this family.  In 1880 Susan A is still in the household, but Mandy/Amanda is gone, probably married and in her own household.

    Barnett, Amanda 12 F W Mississippi [born abt 1858]

Amanda first married Jesse A Gooch 2 November 1876, according to family sources.  I have not found any record.  Notes on Amanda's Find-a-Grave memorial indicates she and Jesse moved to Young County, Texas, some time before 1900.  But note that in the 1880 census their first child W M (seems to be Willey in family notes provided by Jared Kirk) is reported to have been born in Texas.  But the 1880 census indicates they moved to Yell County, Arkansas, in the meantime, where they are recorded in the1880 census.

They are found in Love County, Chickasaw Nation and Oklahoma later.  This is ian interesting pattern, since Love County, is in South Central Oklahoma (Indian Territory at that time), while Yell County, Arkansas, is in the west central area of Arkansas along the Arkansas River, considerably north and east of Love County, Indian Territory.  Young County, Texas is south and wst of Love County, Oklahoma.  It would be interesting to know what led them to Yell County, Arkansas, rather than going north into Indian Territory from Young County, Texas.

They may have traveled diagonally through Indian Territory, or they could have stayed in US territory by going east across North Texas, then up into Arkansas.  They were enumerated in the 1880 census in Yell County, Arkansas, east of Ft Smith.  Amanda's name is written Mandana, like it was started with the nickname Mandy.  They had been married about 5 years at that time.

1880 Federal Census, Yell County, Arkansas, 10 June, Spring Creek Township, District 231, page 16, Hse/Fam #63
Gooch, Jesse A  W M 21   Farmer MS MS MS
Gooch, Mandana [Amanda] W F 19 Wife Keeping House MS GA GA
    Gooch, W M  W M 2 Son Single TX MS GA

Note that the enumerator has a different state of birth for W M's mother than he has for "Mandana," apparently just copying down the same item from Amanda's mother.  If this census record for their son W M Gooch is correct, they moved to Texas soon after their marriage, where W M was born, but then moved soon to western Arkansas, where they were enumerated in 1880.

"Jesse and Amanda had a son named John Pearl Gooch, who was my great grandfather.  Our records have Jesse and Amanda's children as Willey Gooch (probably the W M Gooch in your tree), Jessie Gooch, John Pearl Gooch, and Sieburn Dosier Gooch (which you have).  I have a birth certificate for John P. Gooch that lists Jess Alexander Gooch and Danie Barnett as his parents.  His birth date is August 20, 1886 in Overbrook, Love County, Oklahoma.  I also have a copy of his death certificate that lists Jesse A. Gooch and Amanda D, Barnett as his parents.  He died on Oct 23, 1965 in Live Oak, Sutter County, California and is buried in Gridley Briggs Cemetery.  John was the Postmaster at Laverty, Grady County, Oklahoma and I have a copy of a certificate signed by the Postmaster General.  I don't have any records to support Jessie Gooch as a child but I have a birth year of 1884, birthplace of Overbrook, Love, Oklahoma (same as John P. Gooch), and a death place of Santa Barbara, CA.  The information on Jessie Gooch is just from a family group sheet."
--  Jared Kirk, great great grandson of Jesse and Amanda, email to Orville Boyd Jenkins, 10 November 2013

Danie and Jesse were divorced before 1898, when Dany married widower William G Ridge.  Danie and William were enumerated in Chickasaw Nation in 1900, reported to have been married about a year.

Amanda is named Danie on her gravestone.  No date of death was engraved on her original stone.  She and her husband Rev W D Ridge have a joint headstone.  A later stone photographed by Winnie Yandell has the death date as well.  The old stone had her name as Danie, but the new one with her death date has it misspelled as Damie.

    Amanda 'Danie' Barnett Ridge
Birth  Nov. 4, 1859 Prentiss County, Mississippi
Death  Sep. 15, 1942 Grady County, Oklahoma

Amanda (Danie) was the daughter of John B. and Minerva Owens BARNETT, one of 10 children, bn in Mississippi. Sometime before 1900, the Barnetts moved into Young Co. Texas, and on up to Love County, I.T. Many of her married siblings migrated and are scattered over the state.

She mar. Jesse A. Gooch in 1875 [2 Nov 1876, according to some genealogies], and they had 3 children: Jessie (dau) Gooch FINES, John P. & Seburn Doke Gooch. [But note 1880 census, which indicates their first child W M Gooch is reported born in Texas about 1878.  Thus they had moved to Texas soon after their marriage in Mississippi, W M, known as Willey, was born about 1878, then they moved to Yell County, Arkansas, before the 1880 census.]

About 1898, she married Rev. Wm. G. Ridge, a widower. They lived in the Laverty area [Grady County, Chickasaw Naiton, later Oklahoma] until their deaths. Her brother, John F. Barnett, is buried in Non Cemetery; her mother d. at Ft. Gibson per family info. but cemetery unk.

    Parents:
    John B. Barnett (1814 - 1897)
    Minerva Taylor Owens Barnett (1817 - 1903)

[Two double stones.  One has his initials as W G, the other says W C.]

Note: Marker says "Damie" but should read "Danie" nickname for Amanda.
