Notes

  • Ron West provided the link to Mary West Rumera's genealogy of the West lineage.  For George West, born ca 1776, she has a list of children.  Her list lacks a George W West, thought by some West researchers to also be a son of George and his wife Colista McHanie.

The genealogies I have seen spell the name Merrick or Merick.  Merrick is listed as M H West in the 1850 census.  He and his wife Sarah is living in Gilmer County, Georgia, with two children, Columbus I and Hester Ann.  Enumerated on the previous page is his brother Benjamin West.

On the same page with Benjamin are Marick and Ben's parents, George age 74 and wife Edith age 71.  Sarah West's sister, Emmalissa Mullinax Stephens is living 4 houses away and enumerated on the same page.  Sarah and Emmalissa's parents, Isaac and Rachel Mullinax, are on the next page of the 1850 Gilmer census.

Merrick's name is spelled Marick in the census of 1860, when he and his family are living in Towndsons District of Pickens County, Georgia.

Merrick died in October 1862.  Annie Americus was born shortly before Merrick's death.  In the 1870 census Sarah is the head of the family, managing the family farm with her children.  She lives in the same area, with the Post Office being Jasper, but the name of her township is now Truckwheel, instead of Towndsons District.  In 1870 she lived next door to Martin B and Thalia Ann Mullins.  Two door down the other way were Sam and Nancy Tatum, with children including Amanda, who later married Sarah's son Gus (Augustus Lafayette).

Theodocia West (abt 1858)  Georgia  White  Female

The name of Artelissa here matches the child listed as Louisa A in 1860.

Merrick ended his life in Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee.  According to information compiled by Mike Taylor, Merrick was buried in Sanderstown, Georgia.  I expect he died in a hospital in Knoxville.  He was buried in Antioch Cemetery, Sanderstown.
