Note that the year of birth is here reported as 1894, wile the year on his birth affidavit above is 1895. This is a common error in the 1900 census, apparently due to the procedural formula in the instructions to the enumerators. That census is wrong about half the time, it appears. The year Charley as remembered it later was 1896, going by his WWI registration (see below). But on his WWII registration, the year is 1895 (see below).
Charles was listed on the 1904 roll of Chickasaw Citizens by Blood. For some reason, Charles is listed by himself on a different page from other members of his family, as the last entry at the end, after names starting in V.

In 1918 Charles registered for the WWI draft as an Indian, under the name Charley William Thompson. He is living in the area where he was born, near Rosedale, in McClain County, Oklahoma. Notice that from his European father he inherited red hair. (But in 1942, on his WWII registration, his hair is reported as Brown; he is also reported as White, not Indian.)
Also note that the year of birth is different her from his birth affidavit filed by his mother in 1905. The affidavit reported birth year as 1895, but on his WWI registration, Charley reported it as 1896. We see many instances of one or more years difference in birth year as it gets handed down and recorded at different points. Later records and his grave have birth date as 28 July 1895.
