Notes
- Sarah Ann Duckett is most often found in genealogies under the name Sarah A Nichols, the name on her marriage record with Z T Barnett. She is clearly documented in early life and in her burial information as the daughter of John A and Jane (Hamilton) Duckett. Perhaps Nichols was a first married name. I have not yet found documentation for her change of name from her maiden name of Duckett to the name of Nichols on the marriage record.
In the 1850 census Sarah A Duckett is 6 years old, making her born about 1844. This early report is more likely to be accurate than later ones and the common one found in genealogies of 1850. 1860 is similar, reporting her 15 yeras old (b 1844-1845).
In the 1860 census, Sarah is reported as Sarah A E Duckett. The 1900 census tells us the A stands for Ann. I have not found any documentation for the initial E. Her Civil War pension record has her name as Sarah A J Barnett. I have not found what this J initial stood for either. She is normally referred to as Sarah A. One instance of her middle name Ann occurs. Her grave has Sarah A, but the funeral/obit card carrying the record of her burial, while providing much family and personal information, has her as Sarah H.

Records for a Sarah Barnett, wife of Taylor Barnett, in Baker County, Oregon, match very closely Sarah Baker, wife of our Zachary Taylor Barnett. Following up on her records led me back to Monroe County, Tennessee, and a chain of records telling their story.

Even though this genealogy has no date of death for Melvina, we know Melvina died before 1900. Her husband Marion Boatman is reported as a widower in the 1900 census, living with her parents..

Melvina and Marion had one child, apparently, who is reported in his grandparents household in 1910, as Willie Boatman, age 11, making him born about 1899. I have not found where he was at the time of the 1900 census, when his father was reported in his grandfather's home. Nor have I found his father in 1910.

In 1920, Sarah is living alone as a single-member household, next door to her son James on one side and her daughter Elvira Rhymer on the other. Sarah's age reported in 1910 would make her birth in about 1854. In 1920 her age would make birth in about 1865. Her grave says 1850.

Sarah's related funeral card has her name as Sarah H Barnett. This card gives us further information that might indicate this Sarah and Taylor are a different couple from our Zachary Taylor Barnett and Sarah Nichols. Sarah's funeral card reports more family information including Sarah's parents' names. Her father is reported as John A Duckett, whereas the name of Zachary Taylor Barnett's wife was reported on their marriage record as Sarah Nichols.
The name Nichols might have been a previous married name, accounting for the name difference. Or perhaps John Duckett was actually Sarah's stepfather, the second husband of her mother Jane. I have not found any records for Sarah before the 1900 census.
Sarah's name on the Funeral Card is Sarah H Barnett, while her grave and the memorial on Find a Grave, as well as the photo of her gravestone, have her name as Sarah A Barnett, matching the Civil War pension record name of Sarah A J Barnett. I have not seen any other documentation or discussion on her other middle initial J.
