Carl Bernard Strange
Birth Aug. 15, 1907 Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee
Death Dec. 17, 1927, At Sea
Carl Bernard Strange was the eldest child of Alice "Blanche" (Burkhart) Strange and Luther Ruble Strange, who had married on Jun 6, 1906 in Knoxville, Tennesse. Carl was b. Aug 15th, 1907. He and his parents lived in the home of his mother's father, Claiborne Eli Burkhart, a widower since 1889, along with two cousins, Jonathan Eli and Henry Wesley Burkhart. Henry remained with his father for the rest of his life. By 1920, Carl was 13 years old and living with his parents in Franklin, Tennessee with his younger brother, James, b.1914, age 6. A daughter, Ora Mae, had been born June 7, 1917, but died on Dec 14, 1917 while the family was living in Chattanooga. She was buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in Chattanooga, on Dec 18, 1917. Carl graduated from high school when he was 18 years old, the Class of 1926. He joined the Navy following graduation, service number 294 05 94. He was assigned duty, following basic training, onboard a submarine, USS S-4 (SS-109), which was in the Atlantic Ocean East of Provincetown, Massachusetts, on Dec 17, 1927 when it collided with the USCG ship Pauling. He was one of the many hands who drowned. Carl was interred at the National Cemetery at Chattanooga, Tennessee under the name Carl "Bernice" Strange. I have sent a DD149 to request that his name be corrected to Carl Bernard Strange. I may only be a 3rd cousin, twice removed, but it seems like the least I could do.
Thank you to Wanda Bonamarte for the wonderful headstone picture. A big Thank you to retired Navy Veteran John Montgomery "Rubbings" who provided me with the information regarding Carl's death, including the specifics of it. It means alot to me and other family members who have wondered what took Carl's life at such an early age. He left the information in the flowers section so it will become a permanent part of his memorial. Carl Bernard Strange's memorial was amended on Mar 21, 2013 by Kathie L.Webb Blair.
