Consistent with the pronunciation patterns of the local dialect, the 1870 census reports Gilead as Gilliard. The 1880 census gives us the formal form of "Gilliard's" name, which we find in various sources, Gilead. Several family sources and public records vary in recording Gilliard's name as either Gilliard or Gilead.
The elite southern speech would pronounce the name "Gilliard" very similarly or exactly the same as the separate name Gilead. His mother's obituary names him Squire Gilead Green, Squire apparently being also a given name and not the old feudal title.

The mother's name here is typed as Lamar. It is the first indication I have had that Lamar was one of Hannah's names. Perhaps this was a typo for her name Hannah. There are several other misspellings here, including the county name (which I have entered correctly), and obviously Gilliard's name itself. Notice here also that the name for Gilliard's father is given as James Monroe Green. This takes us back to a discussions and uncertainty even within the family over this name.
It is documented in various sources and asserted in family sources as both James Moore Green and James Monroe Green. The doctor filling out Gilliard's death certificate also comments that he has known Gilliard all his life, so we would think he would know the correct name of Gilliard's father. But other errors on this certificate and the uncertainty of the name of the mother here as Lamar (a man's name, and evidenced nowhere else I have seen) throws doubt on this source as uncertain. His mother's newspaper obituary in 1931 is well-styled and knowledgeable, and it presents his name as Squire Gilead Green.
There is a matching record for his burial in Find a Grave.

But there is also a matching grave in Antioch Baptist Cemetery near Blacksburg, just over the border in South Caroilna, where other members of his family are buried. Gilead has a joint marker here where his first wife Rachel was buried, and his second wife's nmae is also on the stone, making it a triple stone. Gilead's (Gilliard's) Gravestone there records both wives, as does the memorial above for the Double Springs grave.
