Notes

  • Alice's place of birth was uncertain, and she is reported born in Indian Territory in the census.  But her daughter's death certificate reports that Alice was born in Wise County, Texas.

Her daughter Gertie's death certificate reprots that Winnie was born in Wise County, Texas.

    Texas Death Certificate
    Gertie T Handy
Residence 305 Nelson St, Quanah, Hardeman, Texas
Death 27 Dec 1956 Memorial Hospital, Quanah, Hardeman County, Texas
    Birth 16 Jan 1893 Oklahoma
    Occupation Housewife, Widowed
    Father Newton Philpot, born Mississippi
** Mother Alice Jackson, born Wise County, Texas **
    Cause of Death, Coronary Occlusion
    SS# 458-03-1820
    Informant Newt Handy (son)
Burial 29 December 1956 in Quanah Cemetery
    By Knowles Funeral Home
    Certificate Registered 29 December 1956

So this means that Alice's parents Talitha and Abe Jackson moved to Indian Territory after 1870 when Alice was born.  This matches records later found for her father Abraham in military activity in Indian Territory during the Civil War, and court records for indian Territory in the Federal court in Ft Smith/ Van Buren, Arkansas before the establishment of the state of Oklahoma.  (See profile and Notes for Abraham Jackson and Daniel David Green.

It is thought that Winnie and Newton married in Texas about 1888 or 1889..  Their first child Lou Ellen is reported by all her censuses to have been born in Texas, in 1890.  Winnie and Alice appear in the 1900 census in Chickasaw Nation, in what became Love County. Oklahoma.

1900 Federal Census, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, 8 June, Township 8S, Range 2E, District 151. page 4B-5A, Hse #60, Fam #65
Philpot, Newton Head W M Jan 1868 32 Married 10 yrs MS TN MS Farm Laborer
    ** Philpot, Alice Wife W F Feb 1870 30 Married 10 yrs Ind Terr  MS GA **
    Jackson, Talitha Mother-in-law  W F Dec 1842  57  Widow  9 children, 6 living GA NC NC

Note that the 1900 census reports they living in Chickasaw Nation.  That area became Love County, Oklahoma in 1907, where they are reproted in the 1910 census.

1910 Federal Census, Love County, Oklahoma, 2 May, Washington Township, District 173. page 7B-8A, Hse #139, Fam #140
Filpot, N Head M W 42 Married 20 yrs MS IL US Farmer, Rents
    ** Filpot, W A Wife F W 40 Married 20 yrs 8 children/5 living OK MS GA **

Because of the censuses, it appears they moved to Chickasaw Nation sometime in the 1890s.  Other members of both their families lived in Chickaaw Natoin.  All the children after Lou Ellen were born in Chickasaw Nation/Oklahoma.

It is thought that Winnie died in Love County in 1917.  That is the same year Newton's obituary reports he mvoed to Ada, Oklahoma.  Howeever, it also reports he moved there from Sulphur Springs, Texas, when the census indicates he was living in Indian Territory/Oklahoma.  But they havd lived in Love County since their marriage or soon after

But it is interesting that Winnie was buried in Ada, and not Love County, where many of her family were.  There are many Philpots buried in the Rosedale Cemetery in Ada.
