Notes

  • In the burial information for Double Springs Baptist Cemetery, Cleveland County, North Carolina, I find what appears to be Ambrose McSwain, son of Rev Louis Moore McSwain.  The date give there for his birth is December 15, 1856.

This fits the other facts for him and his family.  However, in the 1870 census for York County, South Carolina, where he lived with his father at a pastoral assignment, he is reported as 12 years old.  If his birthday was in December 1856, he should have been 13 in August 1870, when the census was conducted. Other sources estimate the birth from ages in the censuses.  I am using this date in the burial information for Ambrose's birth.  The place of birth is reported by various sources as Rutherford County.

Note that in the 1860 census Ambrose is designated as "idiotic."  Yet it appears to be this same Ambrose who is married and has a child in 1880.  The census records that Ambrose is the head of his own family in the same household with his brother Reuben.
